Do you spend watching TV....

Is there such thing as too much TV?

I'd say I watch about 6 solid hours a day.....although hardly any on fridays, saturdays, and sundays.

Oddly enough considering I write for a TV site, my only regular shows are Grey's Anatomy and Lost. And I still sometimes watch Desperate Housewives, if only because I think Marcia Cross is hilarious and it's on right before Grey's Anatomy anyway. Other than that, just news really. This summer I'm gonna try to catch up on 24 since I've never really watched.

On my days off I usually always have the TV on for background noise, and I sleep with it on at night (which is bad I know). As fas as WATCHING though, probably 5 hours a day or so.

I probably watch about 4, usually maybe one or two shows that are on any given night and then the rest is catching up on stuff I've recorded.

Now that I'm home from college, I'll just be watching my weekly Grey's, Survivor, The OC... erm, except that they're all ending. I still have my All My Children every day though! So I'd say maybe 2-3 hours a day here. Its a far cry from when I'm up at school, where someone always has the TV on so I'll just wander in and end up watching reruns of Boy Meets World and Full House all afternoon on ABC Family...

There's a slight difference between watching and having the TV on as any ADD kid will tell you. I have the TV on about 4 hours a day but probably only watch 2 (unless it's sunday then all bets are off). However now that I work for a cable company the TVs (yes plural as in almost everyone of my supervisors has one) are on from when ever the first person gets in until the last person leaves. Not that I have any say in what's on.

I also have the TV turned on for hours just for the background noise. Good to know that's pretty normal around here.

I watch a lot of television shows on DVD, which I guess is technically still TV. With both regular TV and DVDs, it's probably about 2 or 3 hours a day, more like 4 on weekends. I play a few hours of video games on the weekends too, which is ON the TV, but I guess that doesn't count. :p

I watch about 1/2 hour in the morning and about 5 hours at night. I have a t.v. in every room so I can turn them on and off as I walk through the house. Actually, there's no t.v. in the bathroom, but I can open the medicine cabinet and see the one in my bedroom.

Example. Last week my FWB came over during the Survivor season finale (which I told him I'd be watching with my female friend). He was being kind of flirty- we were WATCHING the show and made him wait until the commercials to ask questions. Once I told him it was on for three hours, he came back later. Have any of you ever held off on sex until your "show" was over?

angelic_shy_sweet_guy
05-20-2006, 08:41 PM
Are we not supposed to do that? :p

Actually, I don't think I've really done it before, but I've had it done to me a few times (that kind of makes me sound sex-crazed  ). Anyway, I was understanding about it because I've never "needed" it and I know that sometimes we never know if/when a show can be seen again.

I have done this to my hubby, but he has done it to me too. But the sad thing is when he watches tv while we do the deed, not even to new shows, but like re-runs of family guy on cartoon network. very sad :( kinda funny though.

I guess it depends on the sport cg, b/c for me the Survivor finale equals a Steelers playoff game. Not the Superbowl, but it's a pretty big event. If you make your significant other wait on EVERY game then that's just selfish!

A half hour show is only 22 mins.
An hour show is only 45 or so mins.

A THREE HOUR SHOW, with tons of recapping within is only like a 2 hr show.

In the age of TiVo, you should be having sex twice during the Survivor finale, not miss a thing and end it right at 11 PM.

It's all about the planning.

not every game, but i'd definitely make her wait during a browns playoff game.

which explains why she's never, ever had to wait.

zoobabe

^ that was funny:) (just like the Browns)

sg- dub. I don't have a TiVo, and my friend was here watching the finale with me, so since a 3 way wasn't going to happen- he had to wait. At least I didn't make him wait through the Desperate Housewives finale! That would have just been mean.

There's a rule in my apartment that actually requires nothing other than watching/cheering may occur during a Steelers game ( apparently years ago when my boyfriend and our roommate were roommates, Ry left to have sex during half time and they lost). You're only allowed to pee at commercials and phone calls cannot be taken/made until after the game. And then my boyf gets pissed when I pick GA's over him.

zoobabe
05-22-2006, 06:25 AM
^sounds good to me. At least watching GA would get you revved up if you're looking at McDreamy, McSteamy, finn, or Dr. Burke. Maybe a Steelers win does the same for him?

I had an ex, who would purposely initiate sex/four play minutes before my shows would start. That is pure evil. I was able to catch the show anyways.

THE combination of being currently "in between" relationships and owning a TiVo makes this question moot.

Wow, I just noticed this thread was here. Although I am in the same boat as EdHill, I would say you have to go with the sex. Worst case scenario is that you have to read the TVgasm recap or rent the season on Netflix. Best case scenario is that you have a Tivo and you can finally do something worthwhile during cuddle time.

Also in-between relationships here. I have to admit though I used to do careful planning as well-not that it mattered, nothing took more than 15 minutes with my ex anyway! And he wonders why I was still up watching tv after the fact??

I made him wait again tonight. It was worth it though, for both of us. What's the harm in that? Plus - I'm going to win money on the AI bet that I made.:D

I've done this, and felt plenty guilty about it...well, for a few minutes anyway. Then the show was on & all was forgotten :p

No, seriously...I was watching Top Chef recently (it wasn't even the finale!) and my husband initiated sex, and I was lying there pondering the situation and thinking "Well, they DO rerun these shows pretty frequently. I can catch this episode at 9pm next week right before the new one. Okay...let's do it!!!" I hate to have LOUSY sex, y'know? If we're going to do it, I want to be in the right space mentally

I've heard it said that you shouldn't have a TV in the bedroom, but I really disagree. To me, there's nothing like cuddling up together watching a good show! Throw some sort of chocolate dessert in there, too, and I'm a very happy lady ;)

A day? week? month?

I went to lunch today with someone who doesn't watch TV - it really hindered my ability to come up with conversation topics (which I blamed on her). It is her problem right? It's not me, it couldn't be me?

Who doesn't watch TV anyhow?

The same crazy people that decide to home school their kids?!? :D

It's definitely her problem Tink! I have a guy like that at my office, and I think some TV watching might do him some good - the dude is sort of a nutjob!!

That reminds me of when we had the Hotel. We hired the local Amish on occassion to do some carpentry work for us. They would come in the bar at lunchtime & we'd make them lunch. They LOVED watching TV, especially cartoons. They would sit & giggle over Porky Pig & Bugs. They'd also have a draft beer too! Scandalous!

I have a friend like that! She always is like: "Oh, I don.t watch TV, its all junk." But when I call her, I hear Top Chef on in the background. We.ve only recently gotten her to admit that she "sometimes" watches TV.

You know, about a year and a half ago I had the pleasure of dining with some dear fellow TV-addicted friends, and an old friend of mine (film buff, serious TV stuff like The Wire) and his wife. Let's just say that when we tried to discuss the recent season of Big Brother, and the friend's wife said something along the lines of "why would anybody watch that?" it was awkward. I get that you don't like it, not everybody has to, but don't make other people feel small for what they enjoy.

I have a co-worker who swears she doesn't watch tv, but she knows about current shows and comments on them - so I am sure she is lieing out her ass about not watching.

My boss refused to pay for cable or dish - so he only has the local channels and PBS. I don't know how he survives!

I don't watch a lot of tv daily during the week (about 2 hours) - but I have shows I can't miss, and recording them doesn't count! And all bets are off on the weekend. The tv goes on in the morning and stays on til I go to bed. I am also one of those weirdo's who won't allow a tv in the bedroom. Bad, bad habit to get into, sleeping with the tv on.

I have to nap with the TV on - I need even background noise otherwise the smallest things wake me up, like kiddies walking down the hallway.

My oldest daughter hardly watches TV. She'll catch an occasional Amazing Race or Survivor episode, but that's it.

i have to sleep with the tv on too! i do try to remember to put it on sleep so atleast its not on all night long.

i try to limit myself to one show a night that i *have* to watch -
Mondays = House or Heroes (depends)
Tuesdays = Biggest Loser
Wednesday = Lost
Thursday = Top Chef rerun, soon to be replaced by Survivor
nothing friday, saturday, or sunday. but that doesnt mean that i dont watch tv those days. just that i dont have anything particular planned for those days.
