So a good friend of mine is in Equador for a week (he’s kinda cool that way) and gave me keys to his apartment on the upper east side. I’m thinking a night out on the town is in order for Saturday. Any Ny’ers know of anything interesting going on this weekend? Any small off, off Broadway shows, comedy shows, or what have you? Perhaps some funky bars I haven’t come across yet (Although I’ve been to quite a few, McSorleys, Chumley’s, the Burp Castle, etc.)

Is this an invitation? Upon further inspection I see that it isn't. How embarrassing. I'd love to go to Ecuador though.

If you like beer and want to stay on the upper East side the Gingerman (38th between Madison and 5th) is pretty good. It is one one those tons of beer from around the world bars. There are also a few bars nearby. On the upper West I have been to Prohibition (83rd and Columbus Ave). If you want to go downtown there is the Peculiar Pub (145 Bleeker b/w LaGuardia and Thompson), it is more of a college crowd but a fun place. Again, there are lots of places in that area. For Comedy I would go to The Comedy Cellar (117 McDougal b/w West 3rd and Minetta) - they always have a great show. A lot of times Colin Quinn, Dave Attel and other comedians show up and perform. There are a ton of pubs in that area as well. I think that is your best bet. Hope this helps.

Oh, and if you go to the Comedy Cellar be sure to go to the bar attached to it next door. That is where all of the comedians hang out before they do their set. Sometimes thats more fun than the actual show.

Hmmm...i'd like to see a recording of Conan or something....but maybe you need tickets for that way in advance (there might be a line you could wait in though).

There is a line. One in the morning that lets you get the tix for the afternoon. No tapings on mondays. But worth it if you get a ticket.

I may head down to the upright citizens brigade. Its only 5 bucks a show and they are usually pretty funny.
To assuage my nerd gene, I may take in a small museum here and there. Already seen the new MOMA.
Me and my brother (sorry LQ, if it wasnt for him it wouldve jsut been you, me and a tub of astroglide) plan on doing a lower west side pub crawl. Chumleys, etc.
I plan on drinking quite heavily. Yah for me!

Here I was thinking a bathtub full of Astroglide sounded like all kinds of kinky goodness. Then I remembered who was writing and recognized one of your famous typos. It's still pretty amusing. Of course I always felt that if one did their job correctly lube was superfluous.

Oh, I do love Chumley's. Don't fall into that trapdoor in the back. Have you ever been the Neue Galerie? My favorite smaller museum...good cafe too.

if you like japanese food there's a great place on 73rd and lex called ikeno hana. they're somewhat pricey (not too bad though) and they have some of the best sushi around. brother jimmy's, bar and bbq, is another cool place up there. one of them is on 77th and 2nd and there's also another on 3rd somewhere in the 90s.
if you're near msg there's a great bar/lounge on 37th and 7th called stitch. i was there a couple of weeks ago and had a blast, but it fizzled out kind of early.
od-tv, i work right near gingerman and pass it all the time but haven't checked it out yet.

I do too - 40th and Madison but will be moving downtown soon to Union Square.

Avenue Q (http://www.avenueq.com/)
Basically, Seasme Street for Adults. You know puppets in adult situations. :p

I second Double L, Avenue Q is very funny! Not off-Broadway so ticket prices are not cheap.
If you're into a bit of gluttony and red meat, there is a great restaurant a few blocks from Times Square: Churrascaria Plataforma at 316 West 49th Street Between 8th and 9th Aves.) www.churrascariaplataforma.com The "salad" bar alone could fill you up (sushi, salads, veggies cooked and raw, various starches, etc. etc.) The meat is brought around on large skewers fresh from the kitchen and a piece is sliced off if you want. Variety is unbelievable. Very, very tasty.
gd call on that Brazilian steakhouse, TaxGirl! i went there a coupla yrs ago for my b'day & since i'm a carnivore, i was in heaven! Great way 2 try diff't cuts of meat.
Edhill, if u're gonna b on the Upper West Side already, u mite wanna check out some bars in that part of town, as they mite be within stumbling distance from home? u could do some good bar-hopping at places like Jake's Dilemma & McAleers, as well as a slew of others on Amsterdam & 80th.
lastly, i know u're only in town 4 a little while but if u get the chance 2 come back, i recommend the Bohemian Beer Garden in gasp, Queens---i know, i know, mite as well be Long Island, but it's easy to reach via subway & there are cabs, albeit livery ones, waiting outside 2 whisk you home. The place has a 'uge, 1/2-a-block size outdoor seating area with picnic tables, lotsa trees & cheap pitchers of gd, Czech beer. nywys, have a good time, it sounds like u've gotten lots of good suggestions from e'1! :)

Cool, I'm on 37th and Broadway. Do you know any other good bars around here? There are tons of dumpy little bar/restaurants on the sidestreets between 6th and 5th, but I like the Playwright and Brandon's.
It'd be great to work in Union Square, nice area plus I live close by.
TaxGirl, that place looks awesome, I must try it!

I acutally live right around the corner from a nice Brazilian Churascaria. Its pretty cool but more of an "event" place, since its all you can eat.
I'd love to see Avenue Q, but a little too expensive for a last minute trip. Im gonna go dowentimw for the day. Ive always wanted to have a drink at Delmonico's, the first restaurant in America (Boss Tweed ate their freqwuently), and right near there are all sorts of sites like the Fraunces Tavern (Washington's farewell dinner with his troops was there) and the old Customs house, Clinton Castle and Bowling green.
Might hit Mcsorley's if its early enough (gets too touristy and crowded at night), otherwise I'm thinking a off off broadway comedy show and then onto the alcohol.

If you have some time, you could put your name into the drawing for free front row tickets. I actually won the tickets and got to see it for free... grant it, it's a bit awkward sitting in the front row where you can see *everything*... but I did learn that "everyone is a little bit racist" so it was a fair trade. :D

Wow - front row! Don't forget that you also learned that the internet is for porn! (and TV gasms)

So if anyof you were wondering who the loud group was orering so many beers in the corner bar at Chumleys Saturday night, it was me and my friends. AThen we ended up at some palce called "Biddys Pub" which was closest to the apartment. That was fun too. And it was fleet week, so their were lots of navy tourists in their white uniforms.
had a blast as always, but on the way home I realized they were filming Spiderman 3 in midtown and I missed it.
