Here's where we're gonna talk shit about tonight's episode while all the west coasters are driving home from work.

Apparently all the judges are favoring Taylor. In light of that...
Go Kat!

Or rather why do the producers put him up to bullshit like "Audience who is going to be your next American Idol?" Or several weeks into it when he makes the person with the middle number of votes "go stand by the group with the most votes". It's so assholely.

Taylor was great! Kat did well, also. I thought her "single" was so boring, but not her fault. Who writes this crap? Taylor's was a bit better. Were they assigned these songs or did they have several to choose from?
Go Taylor!! Soul Patrol!!
(okay, did I actually type that? Add that to my list of annoying sayings I have)

LQ, I hate all that stupid set up crap also. I swear, I have a hard time watching the judges with him most of the time. I don;t know if its actual tension or playing up for the audience or both, but I wish it would stop.

Those last songs were atrocious. What a bunch of insipid schmaltz.

Taylor was amazing! WOO! SOUL PATROL! (there, i got that out, LOL!)
I really do think that, on the whole, Taylor really did do better, mostly because Kat's first and third song sucked, particularly her third song, that was some serious crap. Some of that was not her fault - because that song was seriously, utterly, horrifying crap - all AI coronation songs are, they're just disgusting treacley nastiness, but I think Taylor did better than to be expected with it - but Kat really spent most of the song struggling to find the right key. And I love that Taylor at least, made the song kind of like a Taylor song at the end of it there. All in all, he deserves it more, and I"ll be voting for the rest of the night for him. :)
YAY TAYLOR. (omg, when did i become like a ten year old at a justin timberlake concert? but STILL. GO TAYLOR!)

I think Kat overperformed tonight, if there can be such a thing. From the start of the season, she became popular because she had such a strong voice that didn't necessarily need the frills and doodads because she could hit the notes with conviction. I love the song Black Horse and a Cherry Tree and she did an amazing version of it the first time she sang it, but tonight she tried to push it too far and it didn't go over as well. Same with Over the Rainbow, although she did a good job with it tonight, but part of the thing that wowed the judges the first time she sang it was the clarity of voice and phrase - it's such a big song already, why screw up a good thing with extraneous runs? Although vocal acrobatics can be impressive, I'm much more impressed by that one simple note that gets held without falling flat or losing the breath support behind it and that's what initially gave me the McPheever. I think she would have been much more impressive staying true to her powerhouse voice and her ability to nail the note dead-on.
Taylor was much smarter on his song choices - they definitely showed off his style and personality...and his personality is half the reason he's so popular. He's the everyman type of contestant with a kickass voice. His first song definitely rocked. When I listen to him, I tend to get caught up in the song (even if I'm not fond of the song in the first place) because HE gets so into it. You can tell he really puts himself into the song. I agree with Randy on the second song - there were pitchiness problems, and it seemed like it was because he was a little hesitant. He definitely didn't throw himself completely into the song like he usually does.
The final songs for both Kat and Taylor were typically hideous in the true nature of AI, but at least they didn't have to each sing the same schmaltzy song. I always had a problem with that because the song often lent itself more to one contestant than the other. I don't know who they have writing these pithy songs for the final contestants, but AI really needs to up the songwriting budget for next season. That said, Taylor did a better job putting himself into the song than Kat did.
I think Taylor will win tomorrow night, but I also think they will both have successful albums in the future. Kat definitely won't pull a "Justin Guar-who?" for this season.

I think they both did well in their first songs, although Taylor gave a more energetic performance. Kat was much better in the second round, and Taylor was terrible....a very boring song. I can't really say much for round 3, it sucked...I think Taylor had the advantage in that round because his song had a better tune.
I can't say that one was better than the other, it really wasn't a good finale. If Kat sings pop (ala Kelly Clarkson)...I can imagine myself downloading her songs as opposed to Taylor. I'm not sure if he will get much radio play.

Taylor is going to win. Kat was good, but he had the audience involved and that reflects on what the voters are going to decide.

We voted for the first time ever last night! Got through 3 times though. Dh was like a giggly girl when he heard Taylor's voice thanking him for voting.
Kat's OTR was nice, better than the first time she sang it, I thought. But that first song, meh, and the last song, blech.
Taylor sings songs that are more my taste, so I loved all of his stuff last night. He lets it all out right there on stage.
The worst part of last night was seeing Constantine more than once in the audience. Geez, dude- get somewhere ELSE!! When I see that puckery pout he throws to the camera, I get the skeevies and want to scrub my skin off.

I posted this on another board...
I think that for the shows credibility, it's better for Katherine to win. Because I think the winner should be on the charts and survive in the pop music world, and not to be outdone by the runner-up.
Otherwise there is no point to the show.

Didn't Clay outsell Ruben, though?
They have such different styles and I think the older generation might be voting more this year. Taylor is a throw back to my younger days and I like him. I'd buy his music even if he got voted out weeks ago if he put out some good stuff. Crappy songs will never be in my player even with the best voice singing them.
Kat isn't my taste but I think she has a nice voice. So, even if she won and had catchy tunes, I'd never spend money on owning it. I just don't believe she'd ever sing my kind of stuff. Nothing against her, just not me. I do see why people like her though. I would have loved her in my teens/twenties.
I'm probably not the best mainstream voice though. I'm stuck on classic rock and R&B, with a little bluegrass thrown in when I'm feeling funky.

I'm sure Clay probably did outsell Ruben. And that's my point. And also look at past winners and runners-up that haven't amounted to much. It's not that they can't sing, but it's what they sing. Kelly sings pop, and has done pretty well....nobody else has fit into that category. If Kat does pop music, she should be fine.
Which brings me back to the shows credibility. If out of 5 seasons they only produced one star? Not a very good track record.
Madam Pomfrey

No, not a good track record at all!
I adore Kelly Clarkson and enjoy her music. She was able to sing all styles well. Kat, on the other hand, tends to only sound good when performing in her comfort area, pop, soft pop, bubblegum pop. Even though Kelly released a pop album, knowing she has the ability to sing anything makes me like her even more. Don't know if that makes sense.
I don't really care what the singer does after the show. For me, its all about the weekly competition and pulling for my favorite. I;ve never bought music from any of them. Once the show is over, they all sort of fade away in my mind. I just like watching the competition. I'm definitely not the target audience.
I do think they will have to change it up a bit, though, to keep the consumers interested.

Plus Firecat, the success or "track record" of this show is based on the enormity of the audience- not the record sales of the winner (in my mind). I'm sure the concert tickets will sell, and Kelly's success came AFTER she got out of her AI contract. All this show does is give talented singers a platform to showcase their abilities. It gives the winner a MAJOR break, but it's insta-success. None of that is good b/c it comes too fast and they're not used to it all at once. What the winner chooses to do AFTER winning is more important to ensure lasting success.

I am watching the Red Carpet premier of American Idol right now and those "Good Day Live" people are on. That was the worst show on TV. Those people are so awkward with one another, it's uncomfortable just watching them.

Yay!! Soul Patrol!!
I had knitting class last night 6:30-9:30 so I got home just in time to see the last minute of Prince and the results. Of course, I have it DVR'd so I'll watch today, after LOST. Loved the recap on the blog.
Dh and I are Bat out of Hell fans. He watched the Katloaf performance and was so disappointed. I'm not sure I want to watch that part. Oh, who am I kidding? I'll probably FF to their part first just to see the trainwreck it apparently was.
Totally off topic- On the blog, the pictures of our favorite TV folks at the top, next to the TVgasm logo- I always think the pictures of their faces are what they'd look like if they were having an orgasm. Does anyone else think this? Is that what its meant to look like and I'm just now catching on, or am I a pervert? They are all hilarious with that in mind.

I am SO happy that Taylor won!
Okay, to me Kat is a caricature...she's pretty, she sings, she's robotically sexy. But her eyes are totally empty and souless. She'd be perfect doing musicals, where everything (singing, looks, acting) is exaggerated & overdone. Bleh, I hate her.
Taylor...he, to me, is the whole package. He's fun! He can sing, and he MAKES songs work for him/his voice. He knows who he is & what his talents/skills are & he works them! I love his vocals, his song choices, his dancing, his ballads, all of it. I'd buy his album in a heartbeat :)
I also love that Taylor winning flew in the face of what AI'd Powers That Be would want...Simon Cowell (et al) would love to continue pushing people like Katharine at us...boring clones. Taylor doesn't fit their image of who a singer & performer should be...they have a hard time accepting that it's what WE (the viewing & purchasing public) want! I love that it was shoved down their throats.
Prior to this season, I've never watched AI beyond the tryouts, and I've certainly never taken the time (or cared enough) to vote before. But this week I did!
Yes, Taylor, I am proud of you! No matter how nutty that sounds
On another note? Toni Braxton? Very, very pathetic.
Meatloaf? Yipes...time to pack your bags, Meat, and stop performing/singing.
Prince? ROCKED THE HOUSE!
Dionne Warwick and Piano Man? Seriously, if I never hear from either of them again in my lifetime, it will be too soon! GO AWAY!!! Yes, I know you were successful in your careers...that doesn't mean that I want to hear/see you now!

AOL is already streaming Taylor's new single if anybody is interested in hearing it. I kind of hate it that this cheesey, cheesey song is growing on me, but it totally is! http://us.video.aol.com/video.index.adp?mode=2&pmmsid=1652909

For me, Taylor could sing ANYTHING and I think I'd love it...he knows how to work a song! I just love the richness of his voice, and the intensity of his singing.

I know ME TOO! i just love his stuff - his covers, his original songs, all of it! And I must confess i am now finding Taylor just a little bit hot - I mean his picture on that single cover? OMG! http://207.190.239.133/images/cdcover.jpg (I found that on the fabulous graycharles.com. LOVE them).
I kind of hate myself a little bit that he's made me SO excited to go out and buy a copy of that crappy single in two weeks! He makes me like that crappy song! (That there, I think, is the difference between Tay and Kat - he made me LIKE his crappy song, she made me hate her crappy song, even more.)
ETA: Nevermind that link is broken and now I can't find one without the text. But, whatever, check it out on Amazon - still hot! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FMR4T8/sr=8-2/qid=1149102395/ref=pd_bbs_2/102-6088216-7450545?%5Fencoding=UTF8
