View Full Version : The Many Series of HBO

Please tell me someone else is up-to-date on most HBO series and looking forward to the end of this stupid hiatus. I'm all caught up on Sopranos, Rome and Entourage, and not quite done with The Wire or Deadwood, unfortunately. But hopefully someone else is able to discuss!
I just have to say that Rome kicks ass. That first season blew me away. The characters are great, not to mention the fact that it quenches my insatiable thirst for sexual content. I'm excited to see how they portray Octavian's rise to power and how much they're going to focus on his war against Cleopatra and Caesarion. But I've always loved Antony as a historical character and I was thrilled that they portrayed him in a lovable way. At the beginning I didn't really care about the Atia/Servilia conflict, but it grew on me in a big way, and that final scene between them was phenomenal. Season 2 can't come fast enough.
I'll discuss the others later, when I'm not so tired, and if there is, in fact, anyone else reading who watches these shows.

Oh, man I LOVE these shows!!! I never watched the Wire, but I've seen every other one.
I thought Rome was going to bore me to tears the first couple of episodes, but it really brought the goods. I was standing up and shouting by the end. They tied up every single thread they started.
I have to say I am still pissed off about Deadwood. What a phenomenal show that was. I can't believe it's not coming back. Instead we get a show about a surfing family? Puhleeze. Well, I have doubted them before and they have never let me down.
Sopranos is coming back soon and I can't wait. Do you know when Rome returns??

Rome comes back the 15th at 9 PM EST. On The Sopranos website it says "Gear up for The Sopranos premiere by watching season 6 again starting Tuesday, January 16th at 9:00PM." I'm not sure if that means the premiere is on the 16th or if they're doing a marathon of season 6. Although if that's the case, I don't know why they'd start the marathon at 9 PM. It's probably the premier.
Another good HBO series is Curb Your Enthusiasm, which was pretty terrible in the fifth season, but more Larry David and Richard Lewis is always something to celebrate about, which is why I'm pleased that they're coming back for a sixth season.
Entourage also started out pretty poorly in the third season, but by the end it was back on track. The main problem, in my mind, was that they were focusing too much on Vince and Eric and not nearly enough on Drama and Turtle, who everyone knows are the best characters. I like the Ari-starting-his-own-agency plotline, but I don't really care. I'll like Ari, his wife, and Lloyd no matter what plot the three of them are mixed up in, so whatever. But the lack of Drama and Turtle in the beginning was devastating, and once they started to focus more on the two of them, things got hilarious again. Can't wait to see what happens when it comes back... whenever that is.

Ya Rome ROCKS. You have to rent it and watch four in a row. It feels like work at first, but it totally pays off.
Curb Your Enthusiasm got a little stale to me, but the good thing about HBO shows is you can come back to them any time.
I didn't know Rome was coming back so soon and I am PSYCHED! And it's playing with the Sopranos? With all the other shows coming back in January, I don't think I'll be able to leave the house til Summer!
Entourage is one of my faves. Turtle and Drama had some hilarious stuff this year, and you gotta love a show that casts a horrible actor as a movie star. And the addition of Beverly D'Angelo is brilliant.

The Wire is the best show on television. After getting HBO in '06, I got hooked by the season 3 repeats and was blown away by season 4. I'm planning to rent the first two seasons on DVD. Rome is my other fave, followed by Entourage and Big Love.
Curb Your Enthusiam gets on my nerves, although I've only watched a couple eps. I was visiting friends this weekend, and we noticed the love/hate relationship with CYE was split along gender lines. Anyone else notice this? Or is it just a small sample size thing?

You bring up a point I'd like to ask a question about: does anyone else eat string cheese, or is that purely a Wisconsin craze? I know it's available elsewhere, but I've never seen anyone eat string cheese, let alone buy it, out of the state. But it's in Wisconsin, and in a big way.
I disagree about Curb. Alright, not totally. The fifth season was pretty bad, but I do so love Larry David. He's a great improv actor, and a person we should all try to emulate to make the world a lot more entertaining and obnoxious.

My coworker eats it every day at lunch and it's available in every grocery store in the area. Of course, we're not that far away from WI so it might just be a midwestern thing.
PS: Whatever you do, don't bring up cheese curds around here. I tried once and it got nasty.

I disagree with your disagreement. I can't even force myself to watch Curb - I cringe at just about everything Larry David says and does. :bored:
Then again, Geoge was my least favorite on Seinfeld and Curb is like an All-George, All The Time, Show. If everyone in the world were like Larry I'd have to find a sword to fall on right quick.

Good God, The Sopranos doesn't come back until APRIL. April 8 at 9 PM. That's almost the end of second semester! Apparently Phil Leotardo and Tony's feud heats up in a big way. Obviously. AJ changes or something. And Christopher's movie does get off the ground. Good, because that plot is hilarious.
Apparently Rome's 10 episodes of season 2 will be the last. The good news is that they used that as an excuse to go all out. Some plot points: Antony and Brutus make an alliance. Antony and Cleopatra start their romance. Octavian begins his rise. Pullo and the slave girl get more serious. And, most intriguingly, Vorenus works through the grief of losing his wife by becoming a raging underworld boss.
Entourage isn't back until April, either. This blows.

I caught a bit of The Sopranos on A&E tonight. I'm surprised at how little they edited. Can they really say "shit" on TV at only 8 PM? If so, why don't they do it more? However, it kind of takes away from the impact of what they're saying when everyone's all "You freaking freaked everything freaking up!" "Forget you!" Or when they show their faces up close and they clearly mouth "fuck" but it comes out "What the heck?!" But in a way, that just increased the entertainment factor. Also, I haven't seen the first season in forever, and tiny AJ and Meadow (and skinny Tony, for that matter), as well as Christopher's even more untamed eyebrows, were all really entertaining to watch. If anything, it totally brought my love for The Sopranos back in a big way, and got me really pumped for the premier.
I'm so freaking excited for the freaking premier.

Well, add one more show to my list of HBO series I love: Extras.
I just watched the first two episodes of season 1 on HBO On Demand. I can't believe how hilarious it is. Everyone I've tried to show The Office to can't stand it, because no one can understand their accents, so I know this won't go over well with any of my friends. But if you have no problem with heavy accents, then definitely watch the show.

Rome, Rome, Rome. You never disappoint, do you?
This premier had everything: sex, lies, videotapes, murder, rape, angry mobs, spitting in eyes, political intrigue, an Octavian/Antony strategical ass-kicking double-team, followed by a Vorenus/Pullo regular old ass-kicking double-team, squeezing tits into corpse mouths, et cetera (I'm fluent in Latin, if you haven't noticed). I loved every second of it. I wish Rome wasn't such a dangerous place, because I love every single character and every single actor so much that I'm going to hate it when anyone dies. And there's sure to be a hell of a lot more blood in the upcoming episodes. Sort of like the upcoming Sopranos series finale. I love 'em all, will hate to see any of them die, but it's going to be beautiful.
And Extras was hilarious, as usual. For some reason the premier showed up On Demand a couple days early, so I had already seen Orlando Bloom in all his conceited glory, but it was well worth watching it again. And as a little flashback to season one, anyone who has seen it will agree with me: Patrick Stewart describing his screenplay in which all the women's clothes fall off, "and they're screaming and scrambling to cover themselves up. But I've already seen everything," was one of the funniest moments on TV. I had to pause it to catch my breath and then go back and watch it two more times. I couldn't love this channel any more. HBO is worth the full price of admission.

Once I saw them floatation devices on that woman, I knew she was gonna whip one out. That was beautiful, almost brought a tear to my eye.
Antony was the star. "I'm not getting up until I fuck someone" (something like that)...."You'd be sucking pantomime cock"
LOL

Yeah, it did. Can't wait for the next episode.
I can't even describe how much I love the Antony/Octavian team. With Octavian being totally brilliant behind the scenes and Antony being a total badass, they can't be beaten!
Did you see the preview for next week on the downloaded version, Firecat? If not, from what I remember, Cleopatra comes to Rome with Caesarion and demands that he become the legal heir of Caesar, while Antony falls in love with her. They didn't show much about Vorenus and Pullo, but from what I saw it looks like Vorenus is going to start taking control of the underworld. And I bet Servilia does something bitchy and Octavian acts really smarmy.
Flipit, make sure you watch the Patrick Stewart episode. I think I'm going to have to go watch it again. It's that funny.

Definitely! The fact that they're bringing her in so early in the season gives me hope that they're going to focus around Octavian's war against her and Antony. They said they were unsure if this would be the last season or not, so just in case, they went all-in. So hopefully we'll not only get to see the revenge against Brutus and clan, but also the Octavian/Antony wars. Things could get really, really exciting really fast.

Yeah, Vorenus sure is getting worked up over nothing, huh? I want to tell him that it's okay because his gods don't exist. Although, now that I think of it, his kids were raped and killed. But, come on, that must have happened all the time in ancient Rome! I'd wager at least 2 out of every 5 kids were raped and/or killed back then. So I'll attribute this instance to statistics rather than curses.
On a slightly more serious note, the writers sure are running with this curse thing. Vorenus curses his kids, some bad shit happens to them; Servilia curses Caesar, he bites it. All that's left is Servilia's curse on Atia. Will anything come from that? I don't want to give anything away, but from a historical standpoint, Atia's future looks pretty damn good.

I think Rome is one of the best shows now - or ever to have been - on television. One of the reasons (along with 24, Battlestar Galactica, and a few others) I think television's in a new golden age. Rome's opening credits alone are worth the price of admission. I missed "Friends, Romans, and Countrymen" (from Shakespeare) and more of Atia in the opener on Sunday, but thought it was marvelous anyway.

I've been watching from time to time. It's really fascinating to see what it was like in the first season, since it's been so long. Tony was incredibly skinny. And AJ is just a hilarious little bastard. The language doesn't get to me that much, unless it's really glaringly terrible editing, like one instance where Tony clearly yelled, "What the fuck?!" straight into the camera, but it came out, "What the heck?!" Other than that, I think they're doing a pretty swell job of covering it up. But it's kind of stupid to have every saying "freaking" all the time. And I like that they're not editing down the violence too much, although there was one instance where an entire scene was missing, which really miffed me.

...Perhaps my use of the word "jerker" in that sentence overshadowed the joke I was trying to make with an even funnier, more subtle joke. Best joke ever? It's hard to say what awaits in the future, but I think we can all agree that it's the best joke so far.

I think last night's episode is my favorite episode so far. Vorenus scares the shit out of me, while Pullo is just a really, really good friend. I loved how they set up all the monumental events after Caesar's death all in this one episode: the hunting down of Brutus and the traitors, Octavian's struggle for power as well as his war on Antony, Cleopatra's politics, Antony and Cleopatra, etc. Beautiful, beautiful stuff for a history buff. Also for a poet, apparently. I also liked how I mentioned that all of the curses people put on each other have come true except for Atia, and now that she's aligned herself against Octavian, it looks like they're setting us up for the downfall of Atia.
And the brutal fight between Antony and Octavian? I loved every second of this episode. I'm dying for next Sunday already.

Definitely not as good as the previous episode, but still awesome. This show has made me top of my History of Rome class. I'm just going to write this as I watch last night's Rome, since there's too much going on for me to remember.
I love Atia so much. In my opinion, she is the best female character on TV. The scene with her chatting so casually with Octavia as the torture goes on in the background was hilarious, as well as when she explained her strategy to get a legal confession from the assassin and then kill Servilia out of "self-defense," followed by, "See? I'm thinking ahead." She's brilliant.
I like that we're focusing on her Jewish mafioso and his brother more. I still don't know his name, but I liked him in the first season, so I'm glad to see more of him and to get to know his troubled life. I hope he doesn't turn against Atia, though. And as for the little assassin, I'm glad he's dead. He was sneaky.
BOO. New Octavian. This guy's still really good, but he's no Max Pirkis. And I didn't realize that the guy Octavia flirted with last episode was none other than Marcus Agrippa. I've always loved Agrippa. Can't wait to see him kick ass. Plus his eyes are even more intense than Vorenus's. Wait, Vorenus just showed up on screen. I recant that statement. Vorenus has the most intense eyes EVER.
It's so sad seeing Antony so noble and thinking he can win. I really hope they change history and let him kick some ass. I have a feeling they'll save Antony and Cleopatra's suicides for the dramatic final episode. Which reminds me... I hope the final episode is more than an hour long. Like, two or three hours. I wish this show would go on forever and just follow all of human history. I never want it to end.
Holy shit, this feud between Atia and Servilia has been taken to a whole new level. Oh my God. I did NOT expect rape. Ha! I knew he'd turn against Atia.
I also knew Vorenus and Pullo wouldn't be enemies for too long. They're total BFFs.
They haven't made a big deal about it so far, but armies were not allowed in Rome. Soldiers couldn't even wear their armor into the city. So when Octavian marched his entire army into the city, it was a monumental event. I hope they focus on this. Cicero kind of seemed put off by it, but I feel the real reaction must have been a little larger.
What a perfect ending. And God, I could listen to that theme song all day long.

I'm still watching, but best line so far:
Atia: Thank you, daughter. I really enjoy these little chats we have in between your drug binges.
Second best line:
Octavia: So, I was at an orgy. Who cares?
Atia is brilliant. Not only for that, but for how great she is at playing both sides. No way Octavian lets her off that easily, though.
New favorite character? Agrippa. When he "abducted" Octavia, I had to fall in love with him a little bit. Especially when Atia said, "...And brought you home to mother. What a strange abduction."
This is why I love Atia. She really knows how to make an entrance.
And with that little ending, I feel so bad for Vorenus. He just wants a family!

I just watched the last two episodes of Rome today. God, what a fantastic show. I can't believe this will be the last season. They could show the next 300 years of Roman history and it would never get boring.
I was so glad Vorenus took his "son" back to Rome with him. That little boy is so adorable, how could you not love him?
My favorite part was the end scene of the last episode. What was that sign she made behind her back? What is a curse or the evil eye or what?
Sometimes Vorenus bugs me, like when he forced that woman to tak the money. WTF?!?
I think he made her take the money so he could convince himself he was just using a "whore" for physical release. He can't admit to having an attraction, or any other feelings, to any woman other than his dead wife.

And I think it was a curse of some sort. They made it into a big deal with the music and stuff, so I assumed she'd be holding a vial of poison or a knife or something behind her back. And then they showed her fingers, and I was all, "What?"

Rome tonight was... unbelievable. Best episode ever? Better than Caesar's death? I have to say yes.
Right off the bat, Atia requesting offhand the murder of Jocasta's father was great. Then the Cicero scene was jaw-dropping (even after seeing The Departed twenty minutes prior), finally an Agrippa/Octavia sex scene, and the fucking battle?! I mean, I knew it was coming, but I loved Brutus so much. It was so sad to see him go. Especially being on our side of history, knowing that, you know, he was right, and the Republic really was dead for good... Poor, poor Brutus. Dante may have labeled him a traitor, but I never will.
Anyway, I'm fucking dying to see the next episode. Can't wait to see Octavian and Antony play each other out, now that they don't have a common enemy any longer.
I have never, ever experienced a show so bittersweet as this. Every episode constitutes probably the best hour of current television, yet every episode brings us closer to the final one. I lapse into a mini-depression every time an episode ends, but I get so ecstatic the next time one begins. This show makes me manic-depressive.

I'm speechless
Well, maybe not. Octavia looks so soft, she really has it rough. Attia really did a number on her. That battle was phenomenal. I feel like i've been lied to my whole life, everything you learn paints Brutus as not really being this great guy.....But this show showed him in a new and better light.
"I'm preglant"

Well, Octavius (I refuse to call him Young Caesar, makes him sound like a cheesy rapper) finally got his revenge on Anthony and his mother, by making Anthony marry his sister. I actually felt sorry for both ladies, they both looked absolutely stunned and miserable at the wedding reception.
And the Jewish guy kills his brother by accident? wtf? They wasted all that precious time on that? Who cares?!?!?!
But Servilia totally owned this episode. Cursing Atia and then committing suicide on her doorstop. That woman was hardcore old school Roman to the core. I will miss her.

Dude, Servilia kicked ass! Sad to see her go. I loved the Atia/Servilia conflict.
I already knew Antony married Octavia, so no surprises there. I won't tell you what happens with that marriage, but I have a feeling it'll be pretty funny to watch.
I loved all the sex this episode. But no nudity from Vorenus's daughter? Boo. She must be under 18 or something.
I don't get why he killed his brother already, but I was glad to see some of the historical aspects of the Judaen problems. Hopefully they focus on that a lot, too. Cleopatra should be coming back any time soon, and then things get real interesting...

No nudity from her, but we almost got some cock.
I was actually surprised that in the other half dozen sex scenes we didn't even get a nipple or a ball.

Boy, was that episode really sad, or was it just me?
Sucks for Octavia that she's having a baby. But I can't blame Agrippa. It's essentially impossible to do anything that Octavian disapproves of. I love watching him become the first emperor. They really do a good job of it. (Another history nerd moment: Maecenas said Livia had a son, Tiberius. Tiberius becomes the second emperor of Rome.)
The goodbyes between Atia and Antony and Pullo and Vorenus were really sad, too. I strongly doubt Atia and Antony will ever see each other again. I feel like Pullo and Vorenus might, but only if Pullo enlists with Octavian's forces to fight Antony, which would put the two friends on opposing sides.
I think lots of crazy things are about to go down. Can't wait to see Antony and Cleopatra in Alexandria.

Very sad indeed, and I also look forward to Antony/Cleoptra.
Pullo was a real bad ass at the end, which was awesome. I really wanted Vorenus to kill that whore daughter of his. I hate her...

How many episodes are left? Do you know? I feel like they might be setting it up so a week after the finale, The Sopranos takes its place on Sunday nights.
FC, you need to stop being so stubborn and get caught up on all six seasons of The Sopranos between now and mid-April, so you can discuss that with me once Rome is finished.

We are 8 episodes into season 2. Season 1 had 12 episodes. There are new episodes on the 18th and 25th, which are listed. So that could very well be it.
Tell me how many cocks and tits I will see in the first six season of The Sopranos, and then I will see.

03-15-2007, 07:15 AM
I don't know if you ever see cocks, but the amount of tits more than makes up for that. They hang out at two places all the time: a deli, and a strip club. So sometimes you get dead pigs in the background, but other times it's topless women dancing! Not to mention that Tony has a cute little Russian mistress, and there are plenty of scenes with her naked, as well.

Only 2 episodes left. <sigh>
This episode was awesome, loved when Pullo headbutted the other guy and bit out his tongue.
But the most special moment of this episode was Octavius telling his soon to be wife that he would beat her. But not because he was upset with her, just because he finds it sexually exciting. Too funny. I was kind of upset with the actress they cast as Livia. I definitely didn't picture her as a mousy little thing.
I guess Marc Antony really did care for Atia, he actually seemed upset about leaving. Until he saw Cleo, that is.

That was tough to watch, knowing how many episodes are left. I really feared for Pullo for a few seconds.
The scenese with Antony, Cleopatra, and Vorenus were brilliant. I'm sure they blew their budget on this episode, it was visually stunning.
And the sex scene with Octavius and his wife. Niiiiiice.

Yeah, I thought for sure Pullo was going to die. I mean, what's the difference if he died this episode or the next? I'm really going to be worrying about him and Vorenus next week, since they're pretty much the only two whose fates I don't already know.
Yeah, Alexandria is so cool. I love when they go there.
I love, love, love the way they portray Octavian in this show. Brilliant and heartless. It's perfect. I honestly think I'll miss Antony and Atia the most once the show is over. After Posca came out to get Jocasta and acted like nothing was going on, I loved when Atia turned to Octavia and said, "They've all gone insane!" I love it that she can hit Octavian and get away with it, too. Hopefully nothing bad happens to her on Sunday. They seem to have taken some liberties with her character, though. Apparently the real Atia died before the defeat of Brutus and Cassius. So now there's no way of knowing what will happen to her. Here's (https://oncourse.iu.edu/access/content/user/leach/www/2003/atia.jpg) what she really looked like, though. Good thing they sexed her up for the show.

Dude, Octavius is totally the father of Octavia and Octavian. They were really creative with names back then (actually, Octavian had two sisters: Octavia Major and Octavia Minor).

Yeah, she was so awesome. They took some liberties with where Antony killed himself and the fact that Caesarion wasn't killed. But that's alright. Made it all the more dramatic. It takes quite the show to make me actually regret the fact that The Sopranos is taking its place.

I finally watched the series finale today, and it was so great. I can't believe this was the last episode! That makes me so sad.
So glad Lucius and Pullo got to be together again, they were the real love match of show. Atia was so awesome putting Livia in her place. Anthony broke my heart with how brave he was about committing suicide. Octavian was at his creep best during his conversation with Cleo. <shiver> And I cried when the kids finally relented and said goodbye to Vorenus.

I hope I'm not the only Sopranos-watcher on the boards. The first of the final nine episodes was very entertaining. Other than Edie Falco doing karaoke, my favorite part was the simple Monopoly game that turned into an all-out brawl. Very interesting the way the dynamics are changing between Tony/Christopher and Tony/Bobby. And with all this gun-charge bullshit, are they setting us up for a Tony-goes-to-jail finale? Only eight more episodes, and we'll know everything.
I still haven't gotten over the end of Rome, and now I'm going to have to cope with the loss of The Sopranos, too? HBO, you kill me. You better have some awesome new shows up your sleeve.
Speaking of which, Entourage was, of course, hilarious. I think I forgot how much I love Ari, Lloyd, Drama, and the rest of the gang.

Awesome. Glad someone else watches these shows. I never thought I'd have to read carefully for fear of spoilers in Time magazine. They had a big article about The Sopranos, and they revealed some pretty huge things that happen in the "first two episodes", and none of them happened in the episode last night. So now I know what's going to go down next Sunday. Jackasses.
The banging on the door prompts Carmela to sit up in bed and ask Tony "is this it?" You know that's how a lot of those real life mafiosa families live.

The monopoly game was amazing, mostly because the concept of a group of gangsters who work outside the bounds of traditional money-earning parameters playing a game revolving around capitalism is hilarious. When Tony was like "Income Tax! Damn." I cracked up, because he doesn't even pay Income Tax on the money he earns. Also, he had a hotel in his face.

Another great Sopranos episode. I love how this season has this great feeling of doom hanging over it. The ending of this episode was so unsettling. They're really setting us up for something horrible to happen to Tony. Anyway, I have to admit, I was holding back tears when Johnny died. He was so pathetic. It was awful.
Loved the return of Melfi, and I hope she's right. I really don't want Christopher to do anything to Tony. I'm kind of in Carmela's mindset, though. The second I saw the black car pull up to Tony's driveway, I thought, "Is this it?"
Almost forgot: Awesome cameos by Danny Baldwin and Geraldo. Everything Cleaver-related was hilarious.
I've forgotten - what was Cleaver a cross between? Saw and ....?
The premier was funny. The director was all set to speak, and they took the microphone away. Daniel Baldwin finally got a gig.
I didn't expect Johnny Sacks to die so soon. I loved the role of Sydney Pollock. (I've always loved him)

Just watched the first two episodes of The Sopranos today. The way the are setting up Christopher to die totally freaked me out. I love that big nosed junkie. He's got Phil still upset over his brother death on one side, and Tony thinking that Christopher wants him dead on the other. What chance does the poor little filmaker have?
I just love how they are making Lil' Carmine the King of Malapropisms, "the divine and the propane" , he gave his father a "melifluous" box as a present. Too friggin' funny.
This past sunday's episode was a little off for me. All of a sudden we are supposed to believe that Tony has a gambling problem. Carmela and that spec house, with the bad wood, sold to her cousin. Tony really got to her by throwing that up to her during their fight. He's so mean.
Vito, Jr. shitting in the shower was so wrong. I was half expecting him to fling it at the other boys. When Phil said the "turd doesn't fall far from the faggot's ass", LMAO. Phil having Nancy Sinatra sing at his party, not so impressive.
What's up with AJ's chick leaving him? I knew something was up with her.
I did feel bad for Hesh, losing his girlfriend. It was cold of Tony to bring him the money owed at that time.
