I don't have Showtime, but I've seen the trailers, at the movies of all places, and it looks spectacular. It’s about King Henry VIII and his life and many wives. Looks in the same vein as the recent “flop” Marie Antoinette, but actually much better, because it doesn’t have Dunst in it.
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is King Henry and it also has Sam Neil as Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Premiers April 1st

Match Point was surprisingly great. The tennis scenes, at least. And Marie Antoinette was awesome. Made me stop disliking Kirsten Dunst.

I don't get Showtime, I hope they release this on dvd, it looks really good.
I love the story of Henry VIII, he starts out as a handsome, athletic, beloved Prince. Cut to 30 years later, he has 5 ex-wives (some beheaded), a gangrenous, smelly leg, and is the most tyrannical English King in 400 years.

I'm incredibly excited about this show. I also don't get Showtime, but my best friend does so he will record eps for me. I love Jonathan, Match Point was a great movie.
I'm actually reading a book about Henry VIII right now. Well it's more about the Boylen family, he actually had kids with Anne's sister Mary before he got it on with Anne. It's a super exciting book. And when I saw previews for this show I got all excited.

Just saw previews for this last night - Wowza! It looks right up my alley. Sadly, I am another non-Showtime subscriber. I'm all about HBO.
I love John from Bend it Like Beckham he was the all too adorable footie coach with the lips that begged to be kissed.

Are you reading The Other Bolyen Girl by Phillippa Gregory? I just listened to it on audiobook and I just loved it. Those poor girls being dangled in front of the King like candy, what a crappy life.

I am so psyched for this series. I don't even care that large pieces of it'll probably be historically inaccurate, I am just so excited for the lush looking production and the awesome actors, and the fun of it. Tudor England is so fascinating and full of scandals and stuff that I can't imagine that this isn't going to be fabulous.
I just saw Jonathan Rhys Meyers on The View this morning, and gosh he's just so goodlooking. Yummy!

I can understand you excitement Belle, it's looks like it will be phenomenal. I just might check into signing up for Showtime just for it. Hmmm...if I'm gonna do that I guess I better hurry up, the first is Sunday!

Just watched the first episode. Love the casting for Wolsey. Sam Neill is always wonderfully dry. It looks like it could be alright. Much more accurate than the impression I got from the advertising I've seen for it. The writing is pretty lame so far, but I can't blame them. They've got to introduce us to everyone and everything happening at the time, so several occasions where someone says, "Ah, good to see you, [name]! Can you believe that [event] happened?" can be forgiven. I imagine once they trust the audience is able to recognize Wolsey, More, and the rest of the gang, they'll stop with that bullcrap and get to the good stuff.
I'm still trying really hard to stop myself from comparing it to Rome. Because when I do, I'm extremely disappointed. Not in the sex department, though. Gotta love the sex on this show.

A coworker of mine gets Direct Tv, and they were showing the first two episodes earlier this week. She taped them for me.(love her!) I enjoyed them very much. If King Henry was really that hot, no wonder he got so much tail.
The only thing I didn't like was that King Henry VIII was very tall. John Rhys-Meyers is shorter than every other actor in the series. They should have him stand on a box or something.
Also, did anyone else notice the courtier who looks like Chris Martin from Coldplay? Everytime I saw him it took me out of the show

I don't get showtime either but thanks to dish network, I got the first two episodes for free.
I love the show!!!!! I can't believe they actually chopped off the head of that Buckingham guy. I actually thought that some one was going to save him or something. I guess if I looked into my history I could have seen it coming.
Too bad I will only get to see the first two. Its almost worth ordering show time just for the series.......almost.

I watched the premiere last night. I loved it. I'm so into that era now. Henry was very handsome as a young man and had more power than anyone in the world. (Funny sidenote, we said he reminded us of George W. because he liked to go hunting and loved the idea of war...except George is ugly. LOL) But the idea of so much power at such a young age, it really messes a person up. Last night I said I would love to have lived in that era...except they smelled bad I bet. Anyway, Jonathan Rhys Meyers...HOLY CRAP hes a hot tamale. He could just sit there and recite the encyclopedia and I'd be writhing with excitment.
Also the book I'm reading, The Other Boleyn Girl, is being turned into a movie with Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson playing Mary and Anne (not sure which is which yet) and I'm super excited about that too.

I've seen the first three episodes of the Tudors, and it's really outstanding - great sex, dress, storyline, and acting. If you like history and style, you'll love this. My reviews are at History So Colorful You Can Taste It (http://paullevinson.blogspot.com/2007/04/tudors-commences-history-so-colorful.html) and History So Real You Can Feel It (http://paullevinson.blogspot.com/2007/04/tudors-continues-history-so-real-you.html).

I'm also pretty impressed. Although Showtime did bring me Reefer Madness, so I shouldn't be. Might I suggest the title, "History So Full Of Tits You Can Fuck It"? I've only seen the first two episodes, so don't ruin anything in the third for me yet. Like, for instance, "In the third episode Henry dies."

"The Other Boleyn Girl". They just made a movie out of it too.
I am too cheap for premium movie channels but I just noticed that Tudors Season 2 is playing via "Watch Instantly" on Netflix. Only through April 13th though. Great... something else to distract me from finishing my taxes!

I got caught up in The Other Boleyn Girl bug - so I saw that. Then this past few months been catching up on season one of The Tudors on Showtime. And as of yesterday I am now caught up.
I can talk about it now woot!
Where do we want to start? Burnings, boilings or beheadings?
What do you think of Cardinal Wolsey's dramatic ending? That's not how it played out in The Other Boleyn Girl (the book- the movie ignored him completely).
The king's sister dies and he barely acknowledges it, hell her husband didn't wait too long to replace her. But he's in love. Wonder how long that will last.
Peter O'Toole as the Pope- now there's some inspired casting.

In real life, Cardinal Wolsey didn't commit suicide. He died of natural causes after being charged with treason. The show having him commit suicide kinda bothered me... for about a split second... then I realized it was pretty dramatic, so I had to let it go. Too bad! I really like the actor that played him... although paving the way for Peter O 'Toole isn't too shabby.
A lot of people had a problem with casting Jonathon Rhys Meyers as the lead (Henry VIII was a burly redhead) but I can't help it... I think he is so damn sexy!

I couldn't agree more - sexiest lips on TV at the mo. The actor you liked who played Wolshey is Sam Neal - He was the sexy one in Dead Calm and Jurassic Park (not that JP was all that sexy a movie).
I saw an interview with JRM where he talks about the chemistry he has with the girl who plays Anne. He said within moments of meeting you could tell they wanted to tear each other's clothes off. I think they are both married (or at least one of them is) anyhow - they sure do have chemistry. Humina humina.
I also love the actress playing Catherine of Aragorn - she is so different in this from when she was in The Commitments. She plays a much more sympathetic Catherine than the actress in the movie.
Seems like this season we have a more grown up Henry, less the spoiled petulant child and more the greedy demanding man.

i am getting frustrated watching the Tudors and I just started reading the other Boleyn girl and frustrated with it, because in my own little analretintive way I expect them to follow history a little closer and they aren't.
Henry had two sisters, his sister in the Tudors was named for one and based on the other very loosely. I watched half of the first season on On Demand and am just trying to figure out who is who and once I figure out who someone is they seem to kill them off. So are they going to behead Anne and have him fall in love with Jane Seymour? Seems like it from the preview scenes. Did Season one show his affair with Mary Boleyn? the mother of his son, Henry Fitzroy, whatever his name was? his marriage with Katherine before anne or did it start with anne??
TinkerbellAPixie
04-08-2008, 04:14 AM
I missed the first few eps - but I do believe it touched on Mary. I don't know if it covered the woman how gave birth to Henry Fitzroy and I haven't seen any mention of Mary or her children Henry and Catherine.
If you don't like the changes in the Tudors you'll hate the changes in The Other Boleyn Girl - the movie.
They skip Mary's first child, have Henry fall in love with Anne way sooner, so soon in fact that he leaves Mary on the day she gives birth to Henry. I guess they did that to make you sympathetic towards Anne again since she was such a villian for the first part of the movie.

I just recently started watching this, and I have to say, I am in love. JRM is GORGEOUS. He shall be my next husband. HE WILL!
I love this era and even if the facts are not quite correct who cares? Its not a documentary. If it was King Henry would most likely be played by Carrot Top. I didn't want to wait for Netflix to send the episodes so I watched online at some site that had Japanese, or Chinese subtitles. I am all caught up now but for future reference is there somewhere else I can watch online?

Horrible horrible horrible!! What they did to poor Robert Aske was terrible.
The field full of makeshift gallows! The merchant who sold the rope made a small fortune that day.
I am new to "The Tudors" for S#3. I'm loving it & don't even need to watch the past seasons to get right into the mayhem. I don't care if it's historically correct. I'm not watching for a history lesson.
Is anyone else watching this season?

me, but I have to admit that I'm not as interested this season. Jane Seymour was, by all historical accounts, a bore, and she hasn't livened the show up at all, either. I'm waiting for Ann of Cleves to show up, because the Annes seem to be much more interesting!
They've taken a lot of historial liberties with the show, which I also think is fine.... but they are going to run into a problem if they decide to extend the series out to include Mary and Elizabeth's reigns, since Mary Queen of Scots was Henry's neice, and she can't exist in the TV show since her mom never existed in the show. :bored:
