Just wondering if everyone who views this site has Windows 2000 or XP or if there's some magical way of getting Quicktime to work on a computer running Win98. When I click on the Quicktime icon to play a movie (like the one about the spelling bee boy) I can see the menu bar on the bottom and I hear audio, but there's no video. I've tried in both MSIE and Firefox. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!!!

I have Windows 98 on my computer. The reason you can only hear the audio (as I can) is that the Clipgasms run on QT7 and this can only be downloaded onto comps running Windows 2000 or XP. So you can't even get the software required to view it properly. Good news for me is that my friend is coming over this weekend to install XP on my comp so I'll be in the loop soon.

It's possible that if you install VLC, it may give you the codecs required to view the clipgasms.

Grrr... argh! Windows 98 just sucks. Or Quicktime sucks. Or maybe it's TVgasm that sucks (did I just say that out loud?). Okay, I'm not sure who sucks, but somebody does!

Zoobabe -- hope your upgrade goes well this weekend and that you get to view all the dumb, stupid, boring clipgasms on this site. Of course, when I say "dumb, stupid, boring" I mean "wonderful, thrilling and hysterical" -- I'm just jealous. I don't think my computer's good enough to handle upgrading to XP.

Firecat -- just tried VLC but I think my only chance of it working is if I could save the clip to my computer and then play it through VLC. I only spent a couple of minutes on it, though; I'll get on their website and see if there's anything else I can do.

Oh, screw it. This is too much work. I'm just gonna get a new computer. I can't even download music anywhere any more with Win98. Dell.com, here I come!!!

Yes, Clipgasms require QT7 (we are using the iPod video codec for people who want to download them and play on their ipods). I hope to have everything available in flash at some point as well.

OK- new problem. I now have Windows XP installed on my computer and I upgraded to QT7. However- I still can't view the Clipgasm, only hear them. My friend said this may be b/c my video card is old and not compatible with the new software. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this (without getting a new video card)? I know the settings on QT7 are correct b/c we checked it last night.

I've also been told that I NEED to defragment my comp-which I will do when I have 12 hours or so to kill. Will this make a difference?

Pekmboyd

I'm not a huge computer expert or anything, but I don't think needing to defrag would cause that - I know when we had video card problems my husband was able to find an update online, download it, and poof everything works fine - so I would suggest searching for driver updates for your video card.

Not really a "technical" issue per se but a question about a technical issue. I know you guys are using Macs, I'm just curious what TVgasm is using for the editing application (I'm assuming FCP) and what you're using to compress for the web (Compressor?). And also how you're importing video from TV/Tivo into your Mac. Yea very techinical... but I use to be an Editor and just curious and one day I might be in the mood to make my own Clipgasm.

***please disregard this question***

I had to uninstall XP and go back to 98 b/c we found out you can only activate XP on ONE computer so I would have been screwed after 30 days anyway. Next week my friend and I are going to install 2000 b/c it doesn't have the same licensing restrictions and I'll still get an OS upgrade. I told her it was like living in a fantasy world for one day where I could pretend that I had enough money for a nicer/newer computer.;)

Yeah, I know it's geeky to quote yourself, but I just had to share my news: I just got my new computer... clipgasms, here I come! It's even got a tv tuner and my video card says dvi/vga/tv-out. Does that mean I can make screen shots? I'm SO excited! But if I find out Windows XP Media Center isn't compatible with Quicktime I'm gonna be really pissed.

PS: zoobabe... did you ever get Windows 2000 installed? Did it work?

I feel so bad for you. PC frustration is one of the worst emotions.

we'll see how my PC issues go when my friend comes over with the other disc for 2000. She has a better understanding of computer issues than me. Maybe I need to date a computer geek.

jampony
06-10-2006, 08:36 AM
Tink... thanks! It's not as cute and cuddly as Derder's newest addition, but I live in an apartment, I'm single and I already have two cats and since I really don't want to be known as the crazy cat lady, I can't get more. So I lavish all my love and attention (and money) on new electronic equipment.

Oh, before I forget, Zoobabe... my coworker recently wanted to upgrade from Windows 98 to XP so she asked her daughter's boyfriend to do it. She had the same problems you've had. They put Windows 2000 on instead but, again, lots of problems. It's finally fixed but it took over a month. The punchline? Her daughter's boyfriend IS a computer geek. So I'm not sure if dating one will actually help you. Although, after seeing a picture of your bedding, I get the impression that you might have different, umm, "skills" than my coworker's daughter and the computer geek you'd be dating would probably be of a totally different caliber. ;)

I GOT A NEW COMPUTER!!!!! I CAN WATCH THE CLIPGASMS NOW!!!

YAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

To make a long story short- I was kinda froced into it b/c my attempt at upgrading to Windows2000 messed up my computer and to get it back to where I needed it to be would have cost me $150 to tech support so I decided to buy a new one (which I'll be paying off a little at a time). It has Windows XP and a MUCH faster processor and I'm happy!:D So- you can all stop feeling sorry for me now, but you can still take donations so I can buy a new flat-screen monitor to add to it if you want.;)

Woo hoo! Congrats, zoobabe! I wonder... is there any other site out there that inspires its readers to go broke buying new equipment/software just to be able to enjoy it? That's talent, folks.

PS: I don't know if this will happen to anyone else, but I just thought I'd mention it. When I hooked up my computer Saturday one of the first things I did was get online and try to view come clipgasms. Imagine my surprise when I had the same problem I had with Windows 98... sound okay, no video! Ugh! So I tried to download the new version of Quicktime (using the Quicktime software's update feature) but it kept saying I had the newest version, which I knew wasn't true because their own website said there was a newer version available. Anyway, I tried to download it from the site, too, but the download page didn't have a link. How crazy is that!?! After an hour or so reading their stupid message boards and help files (all useless, by the way) I realized part of the page was missing. I don't know what possessed me, but I tried disabling my antivirus software. Eureka! McAfee Security Center was blocking part of the web page from loading. It's all working perfectly now and I don't mind sharing that I'm finally able to have multiple clipgasms. :D

Totally unrelated to this thread..but I have a question...

I have an HD DVR box from my cable company. For some reason (starting this week) when I select a program to record on Fox's HD channel...it tells me that "record feature not available for this channel"....the other channels seem to be fine

I would call the support line for your cable company. They're used to me asking them all sorts of dumb questions, so it's okay. :)

jampony
06-21-2006, 12:53 PM
I searched for the phrase "record feature not available for this channel" on yahoo and it seems you're not alone in this problem. Sounds like something the cable company needs to fix or maybe you need to download an update to your box. I have no idea what this means; I don't even have a cable box. Could Fox be blocking people from recording their shows? Very sneaky, if so.

Dumb question... does HD really make that much of a difference? My TV's so old I don't even have s-video-something-or-other plugs and I can't connect my computer to my DVD player (something to do with Windows Media) so I can't watch the shows I record on my computer on my TV yet and burning DVDs takes WAY too long. Anyway, my point is that it might be time to get a new TV and I'm not sure if I should even worry about HD right now. Doesn't your cable have to be HD, too?

In case you are interested.... I am an editor, and use Avid Express Pro on my Mac laptop. I load the TV shows by passing it through a miniDV deck that is connected via Firewire to my computer.

Can't halp ya on the Compressor issue, as I have never tried to publish to the web. But the Avid does have setting to do it.

I'm reviving this thread because of the recent talk of internet stealing.

So I was all in agreement with everyone about getting the internet for free because some doofus was too stupid to password protect their wireless router. Then I realized I, too, was a doofus. Mine was password protected, but with the generic password that all LinkSys routers have. THEN right before I was going to bed last night I noticed the activity light on my modem was going insane... and I wasn't online!

So I went in and changed the password, but my activity light is still going nuts even when I'm not online.

Does anyone know if this is normal or is it possible that I'm the innocent victim of a horrible and terrifying crime!?! I feel violated.

I THINK that just means that internet is available. Like my roommate is the one who has the router through her computer and even when it isn't on it flashes. Ours is password protected and it would be impossible for anyone to guess it (ok, maybe not impossible, but I'd pay someone a lot of money if they did). So I think you're ok.

Password protecting your router isn't the same thing as securing your network. All a router password does is keep other people from reprogramming your router - that's different from being able to use your internet connection.

Schoonie
06-04-2007, 10:25 AM
Also, your activity light could be going off because your router is constantly in communication with the cable box or modem or whatever you use from your ISP. It doesn't mean that someone is using your internet, or that anybody is using the internet, necessarily.

One really easy way to see if your network is protected: do a search for all nearby wireless networks - a list will show up, and there's usually a little icon next to the ones that are secured - see if yours has the icon or not.

Yeah, okay, I'll get right on that. (In other words... huh?) :D

I think an easy way to test this is to borrow the laptop from work and see if it picks up a signal. One of my coworkers who uses it said that's how she was able to get on the internet with it and she knows even less about wireless stuff than I do.

I'm not keeping up with technology at all, can you tell? In fact, I just bought a portable dvd player and I had to call radio shack for help figuring out the a/v cables. :blushing:

Yeah, or when your roommate's boyfriend somehow disconnects the router and when you ask her where the internet went she spends two hours on the phone with the cable company. While I just hopped on the oddly named "DoH!!" network somewhere in the building.

For the past 7 years, I've been given a laptop computer from my employer. Prior to that i was using the computer lab at college.......
Prior to that I had a Tandy computer from Radioshack that is a complete relic.

Since I am changing jobs, I will be getting a desktop computer at work, but will no longer have a computer at home.

Can you please give me recommendations of what's the best PC to buy? I'm thinking of getting a laptop.

I'm not planning on doing alot with it other than updating my iPod, surfing the net, and having the ability to work from home on occasion.

Any tips in the purchasing process are welcome!!!!

Poor, DS... nobody's giving you any tips. I don't know about other people here, but I'm always afraid to tell people what to buy in case they wind up really unhappy with what they get.

Nowadays I don't think it's as hard to pick out a computer as it was ten or so years ago. I don't even know how important it is to go with a name you recognize (anybody remember avoiding Packard Bell like the plague?); are there really any horrible companies out there anymore? If you're into research you can go to a site like pcworld.com where they do tests of computers and compare them side by side.

I think most new computers are coming with Windows Vista and I haven't used that at all (but some of our forum regulars have -- maybe they'll give you some info). But places like Dell still offer Windows XP (just make sure if you DO get XP, that the computer is Vista compatible). I've heard you need a good video driver with lots of ram for Vista.

What else? You might want to think about wireless capabilities if you're getting a laptop. I paid extra to have one of those multi slotted camera card reader thingys installed and I haven't used it yet. But I love the fact that I have my computer hooked up to my cable so I can use it like a DVR. I can't think of anything else. Maybe other people will have some suggestions (and clarify any mistakes I made).

Good luck!

I have never, ever spoken with a knowledgeable person at any of those computer/electronics stores. Ever.

They're just salespeople and they want your money. Better to go with your IT department at work if they'll help. I bought my computer from our computer consultant at work and I haven't been disappointed.

I think you have the right idea by going to your IT department. I was looking at a few puters at Best Buy and Circuit City and my IT guys were really helpful with looking at the specs. I ended up getting a Dell and it has Vista - which is very different but I'm slowly getting the hang of it.

Another good thing about talking to your IT guys is they might be able to hook you up with a discount. I got 20% off my Dell thanks to my company discount.

I will disagree with the girls to the point that I DID buy my PC at Circuit City, and DID talk to the salesman there. After I told him what I wanted and what I NEEDED, he directed me to a floor sample that was as good as new (just w/out a box) but was cheaper and gave me what I needed. So- I found a good one ( I even sent an email praising his helpfulness)!

So DS- if you go to one of those places, just don't let them talk you into something you don't need.:)

I have a Toshiba Satellite with Vista on it, and its working really well for me. I spend about half of my time on my computer, for music, photo, internet, and working purposes and I don.t really have any complaints...except that I tend to fill up the memory space pretty quickly.

One of the coolest features about Vista is that you can plug your thumb drives into the laptop and then tell Vista to read it as RAM and that REALLY speeds up processing time for image processing and other things.

Is it safe to store my cell phone and Zen player (that's the kind that has a hard drive in it) in the purse? I'm nervous because I remember all those horror stories about people putting magnets too close to their computers and ruining them. I've actually done that to a CRT monitor before, too. Very embarrassing. Anyway, what do you guys think?

it is safe to store them in there, b/c the magnetic field from that small of a magnet isn.t strong enough to harm either one of them.

Thanks, len! I'm going to try it tomorrow. It's funny, I'm more worried about my stupid mp3 player than my phone. But I LOVE my little green zen and I'd be so sad if I broke it! :crying:

It should be fine Jamp, I have a magnet closing purse as well and have never had any issues. However I have ruined a couple Metro cards by putting them next to cell phones.

With as many purses that have magnet closures I would think we would have heard a major out cry if this was happening. Does anyone wear magnet earrings and would that effect the cell phone?

I never thought of that! Does a Metro card have the same magnetic strip as a credit card?

Good point, giff. If it WAS a problem, we would have heard about it by now. Or the Myth Busters would have done a show on it!

i love my little pink Zen!
I totally don't see you as a pink zen person!

MythBusters DID do a thing on whether eelskin wallets could deactivate your credit cards - because maybe the eels were electric eels and the electric field lived on in the dead skin of the eel it might suck your credit card info....it didn't.

Yeah...well I don't know if it's exactly like a credit card, but it is a magnetic strip. It's happened to me a couple times, but only with the paper cards, not the plastic ones. I think because the paper is weaker or whatever the term may be, the magnet penetrates more than the plastic card.

I was totally going to reference that episode (and the cell phone at the gas pump one, too) but I thought just saying "Myth Busters" made me enough of a geek. I'm so glad I'm not a nerd all by myself around here.

I wasn't sure where else to put this - but I thought you all might find this informative.

How does the cursor/arrow on your computer monitor work when you move the mouse? Have you ever wondered how it works? The mystery is finally solved! Now, through the miracle of high technology, you can see how it is done. With the aid of a screen magnifying lens, the mechanism becomes visible.

Click on the link below. The image may take a couple of seconds to load. When it appears, slowly move your mouse over the light gray circle and you will see a magnification of the actual mechanism. Move left, right, sideways, corners. Also, stop the cursor in the gray circle for a while after you've moved it around. And left click too! Technology is truly amazing, isn't it?!

Wow, Tink. I really learned a lot from that. I had no idea my mouse worked like that. I have a whole new respect for my computer and the workings therein.

Hee hee -- I forwarded that link (two posts above) to everyone I know. I got such a kick out of it.

Okay, here's my question du jour. My mouse has recently decided that it doesn't like moving right at slow speeds. It halts a second, moves to the left a bit and then finally moves to the right where I want it. The rolls and wheel inside are clean as far as I can tell. Anyone have any idea what's going on? For the most part, it's no big deal because it works fine when I move it quickly, but when I'm trying to precisely click on something, it acts up.

Jampers, I cannot extoll the virtues of a laser mouse or a track ball enough. They don't pull that stuff.

I know, I have a laser mouse at work and I love it. But I like the one I have at home, too. I'm used to it. It's comfortable. It matches my keyboard. It's like an old pair of shoes, but without the smell.

I just googled sluggish mouse problems. They seem to suggest on more than one site that when your mouse is being sluggish - it's not a bad idea to reinstall the mouse software. Just a thought.

Pek, I had problems a couple of weeks ago but it cleared up after a day or two. I just tried watching Samantha Who? and it loaded fine for me.

OMG! That was even funnier than the one that link used to go to! Giff.. hover your mouse over the guy's butt. Try that a couple of times. Then click on his ass.

PS: Don't bother clicking "english version". It's still in Japanese.

Is anyone else having problems with the "New Posts" button? the last couple of days when I come by here, if I haven't been here in a half a day or so, and I click it, it doesn't give me all the new posts like it used to. It only gives me maybe a quarter of the new posts. Now unless someone is logging in under my name and checking the posts, I don't get it. Am I alone here?

nope! i.ve been having the same problem. i thought at first it was b/c the forums were kind of dead, but then the next time i click it a few new threads will be there with posts that had been put posted BEFORE the 1st time i clicked the button.

...sorry, that was a really long and confusing sentence, but i hope you caught what i was saying...
