These are the next victims of reality television.... who will be our Stephan, our Marcel? Will we get real cooks or real kookes?
The week prior to Top Chef three we will be entertained with a 3 hour cook off between the top 4 finishers from season 1 and 2... who try to outdo one another in a charity cook off..... Giff, I was too lazy to read your list, so I checked the website. I'm sad as there appears to be no hottie over which I shall salivate...bummer.
I'm looking forward to the brief return of some of my favorite (and least favorite) former cast members. But THREE HOURS? Is that all in one night? It can't be.

My misreading of the write up brought forth the mistake on how long the cook off was .... it is only ONE hour ---boo
which seems way to short!

I have been to a party done by the wandering chefs and the food was fantastic (I work in Boca Raton), I have eaten at Tantra and it is pricey but the food is very yummy. They have rude waiters but the atmosphere of the place is very cool - they play indian porn while you eat!

The Indian porn that was playing was of this Indian couple who practiced the art of tantrict and did a bunch of crap from the Kama Sutra. There was other crap going on with kings and rulers and soldiers but they play music and not the sound of the movie so it was a little hard to follow, plus I was distracted by the two sets of couples that were seated next to us and the one dude decided to slip the girl his digits and I don't mean telephone number. They were typical Sobe rich knockoffs who were high as a kite and didn't care people could see them.

well, no i think they added Ted...maybe this is to gove LESS voice to Padma... she is an idiot when speaking at that judges table...... Gail is returning from everything i have read..
So mark your calandars kids... one week from today Harold, leading Dave, Stephan, and Tiffany face off against Ilan (shut up) bringing it with Marcel, Elia, and Sam...... it should be very interesting and I know that Marcle's foams will not be the only spit flying on the show!

OK thank you Minda for giving me the name of that place ! They have grass covering the floor there right ??
I was on a business trip to FL a few years ago and one of my FL local collegues offered to give us the 'real' FL experience and took us to dinner there. I was with my v.uptight boss, a few cool collegues, and 2 underage interns.... The indian porn in the background was just one thing.... at one point people came out wearing only body paint to gyrate around the restaurant :scared: . That was quite a memorable dining experience.
I can't wait for Top Chef this season ! I hope Tim Allen replaces Gail on the judging panel and she just does the 'challenge intros' etc.
Its a serious tossup whether Top Chef's judging panel is more painful than Americas Next Top Model..... I think ANTM still gets the prize though b/c at least Chef Tom has some respectability.

Miss J kinda makes the whole argument moot, the fact that anyone would consider her a reputable judge just puts the whole thing to shame. Top Chef at least they seem to be successful at the whole food cooking thing (not sure about Padma, but I'm all for stoned porn star wannabes hosting TV shows).

Marcel seriously needs to be on every season of Top Chef. In one hour we got a dorky rap, a fight with the other team, not one but TWO foams, the geekiest sunglasses known to man and more. The world needs more Marcel. Marcel is a reality tv GOD.
Ilan looks even more douche-baggy than ever. He's like one of those geeky guys trying SOOOOOO hard to look cool and he just looks, well, geeky.
Elia, some people look gorgeous as a blonde. You are not one of those people.
Sam is still hot.

I knew season 1 would rock it. My distaste for Ilan was magnified. Ugly hair. And those glasses? Maybe now that I'm a new four-eyes I notice them more, but ew. But beyond the superficial, he was just annoying. I still love me some Harold.

I have to say, Marcel always fascinated me on some level. I never hated him, but I never liked him. I think he got a raw deal by the other cast members and never came off as nearly as much of an asshole as some of them did. He was usually far more willing to help them than they ever were of him, and was more guilty of just being a freaking dork than anything. Of course I would never want to hang out with him, but I think I could work with him without wanting to kill him.

PS: You can have a reminder emailed to you for any calendar entry. It's a little wanky though. One time I got eight reminders for one show, all within a few hours.

So, what did everyone think?
I was kinda bummed that Clay was so over-matched in the first two challenges. He seemed like a nice guy and a good "character."
I really liked Tre but I didn't see him much in the previews for the rest of the season so I'm afraid he's not long for this show.
And my God CJ is 6'8" according to Bravo.com. Damn. And he's cute, too.
So far I like Lia and Hung. Hung is totally relishing in his Marcel/Villian role.

I started searching for a contestant to hate, and one to crush on (to replace my SAM crush). Right now, theres too many damn contestants to tell them apart. I've gotta give it a few weeks to be able to absorb their personalities.
So far "Joey" the italian guy who apparently is going through a man-pregnancy.... he's on the hate list based on first impressions.
I liked Lia. She seems very relatable. Like I could be her, or a friend of hers. She's representing for the 'real' people.
I had to go back on TiVo to recapture my favorite moment of this show. It came from CJ (the cancer guy) who said....."I've got a false testicle and i'm ready to cook". I can tell he's got a sense of humor, hopefully he won't try TOO hard to make us laugh.

I actually kinda liked the guy who ran out of time to put the frog legs on his plate. He didn't go nuts, he explained what happened and he seemed like the understood that he'd have to go home because of it.
And his response to Anthony Bourdain at the judges table was hysterical and ballsy.

Mainly b/c most cooks/servers/peeps working in restaurants smoke and drink alot. Getting off work at 1-2 am --> usually not much else to do.

I have a client named Dick. I always have the toughest time trying to make "hi Dick" come out naturally.
This is the first year I've watched Top Chef from the beginning, and I'm glad I'm keeping up finally - Micah needed to go, I think there's usually one reality show contestant who just isn't cut out for the competition aspect of whatever talent they are competing with, and she was it.
I had a supervisor named Jean. I hated saying hi Jean.
Hung pissed me off with his attitude. I hated Micah saying "you Americans" Glad she's gone, she was so hot/cold.
Brian's lobster wasn't healthy, and that tuna casserole looked dreadful. I personally don't think we need to update our comfort food. I like them just the way they are.

I hated everyone who said the American comfort food meals are 'disgusting'. I saw that array of meals and I started craving mac & cheese and sloppy joes. I KNOW they arent exactly healthy but thats home cooking from my childhood. Have some respect :)
I seriously started hating Hung last night. Before now, I agreed with him and thought he was a good chef. Now I think he's an insecure asshat who needs to be knocked down to size. Is he TRYING to be this season's villan in his interviews? Or does he always think he's better than everyone and everything? Please god, let him get spanked by the judges from this season.
And whomever suggested that we set up CJ with Cat Deeley.... I AGREE. That dude is possibly 7 feet tall? They'd be perfect together!

And Wednesday ends up being making Homemade Favorites.

During the show they said Micah was from South Africa, or she lived there during childhood. Since I have known several people from S.A., I can vouch that her accent is authentic. Since S.A. was (is?) a british colony, people from there have a slightly different sounding british accent.

Like that curly-haired chick from Sheer Genius. At first I thought she had a hearing loss but then I realized she was from South Africa. It's strange that we don't hear it often enough to be able to recognize it as easily as a British or Australian accent.

I saw a television bio on her, ((can you imagine having to produce that?))-- And I thought the accident was actually when she was 14. her mother somehow helped her in the accident that saved Padmas life and she proudly wears the scar in honor of her mother..... I wonder if she was circumcised too?
On another subject----
but I did just have to go to a GYN specialist had her name was Padma...
and she is from India.......
I so didn't want to go at first because of the name......

Does anyone else get annoyed by the poorly dubbed voice overs that happen often on this show? They happen most often during judging panel..... where Chef Tom will be speaking then all of a sudden they pan the camera to someone else pretending to listen while his voice comes back on like 10x louder than normal + no background noise and he summarizes whatever point the producers want him to say...... I get SO annoyed by the voiceovers b/c its the producers creating events at the judging panel that may or may not have actually happened !!! UGH !

I think it's Bravo's specialty; Project Runway is infamous for it. I don't understand how they don't have the technology to make the voiceovers blend with the rest of the show. Or if they seriously can't do that in the studio, take the damn hosts back to the room the scene was shot in and have them say their lines there.

It's really disappointing to me that there are only two female chefs left. And neither Sarra or Bunny foo-foo seem esp. talented. I wonder if it's the stress of being on a reality show that does the female cheftestants in. It seems to have happened every season on this show.

08-16-2007, 01:27 PM
I agree, ang, it is upsetting that there are only two left. i didn.t even realize it until you pointed it out (i always think of hung as a girl anyways). To me it seemed that the female contestants chosen for this season were picked more for the drama or eye candy element they would bring to the show rather than their cooking merits alone, hence as it begins to get down to the more talented chefs there are only two left.
not saying that women aren.t great chefs (b/c they are), just that bravo wasn.t exactly looking to cast great women chefs this season (at least to me).

So i went to Shinsei for happy hour & sushi tonight and Casey, ie Bunny Foo Foo, was working in the kitchen. looked like she was working the line and she didn't look super happy. She wasn't in head chef clothes and didn't come into the main dining room at all. Interesting.. i'm guessing she didn't win the show, but who knows..
I hope this means that she didn't win-- of course, they probably send everyone back to their regular jobs until the season finale airs. She gets on my nerves.
Why did they skip a week!? I'm going through withdraw

I believe they're trying to drag this show out. Really I do, there've been a couple skipped weeks, a random reunion (who does that midseason??) and one week w/out anyone getting cut. It may (this is totally me speculating) have to do with the rumor that was going around that it was taking a long time to get PR cast.

I think they start airing PR while it is still taping. It has to coincide with a New York fashion week. Not sure if there is a New York Winter/Spring fashion week that this upcoming season's finalists will show at?

I think that is right...if the show begins in November I'm guessing it will be the spring show. But now that I think of it don't the shows show a couple seasons early? I have no clue, but it's messing with Top Chef, which I just want DONE with.

Okay... a couple things irked me about last nights episode.
1.) I think something happened that they didn't show. The chefs were all really feisty at the judging table and the judges were all a lot meaner than usual-- they were kind of bordering on nasty.
2.) They got really angry when Howie offered to go home... when last season, they allowed Mia to sacrifice herself for Elia with no problem.
3.) They pretty much punked Howie down as if they wanted to make another decision and now they were screwed. (I personally think they wanted to keep him around b/c people hate him so much.)
4.) I'm all for Howie leaving-- we can certainly do without his sweatfest-- but, if they wanted to be fair, they should have kicked off Brian, ESPECIALLY after what happened to Tre last week. What happened to the captain going down with the ship? They didn't want to kick off Howie-- they made that clear by their reaction to his request.
5.) I think Howie only offered to go home b/c he thought he'd be going home this week. He's not a martyr. He's not a selfless man who laid down for his friend. He thought he was going home so he wanted to save himself the embarrassment of being kicked off. I see right through you Howie!
And what's with Hung being humble and Howie being a team player all of a sudden? It's almost as if they saw themselves on TV and saw what jackasses they looked like... Anyway, I digress... what did you guys think?

Yeah, the judges were nasty last night! What was up with the Schwartz guy calling Howie's food "crap"??? And I agree that it was sort of BS that Howie tried to sacrifice himself (when he was an obvious choice to go home) and they wouldn't let him. Howie was trying to clean up his image before he left, obviously. But it was like the judges were saying, "You can't quit, we are firing you, bitch!" I didn't think it seemed like quite the disaster they painted, though, so maybe something did happen they didn't show.
As far as Hung seeming humble last night, maybe we were watching a different episode, because at the beginning of judge's table I thought he was going to jump onto the table and rip their faces off. He was also a dick during the Quickfire. More like his old self than like the Hung he has been the last couple of eps.
Glad to see Sweathog go, though.

Yes, that is exactly why I think something else happened... I didn't think the party was a disaster at all. So they didn't do what the judges thought they should do with the money. And so the food was all served on bread... the guests liked it. And for the most part, nothing bombed-- except Dale's cheese/yogurt debacle, and even that wasn't horrendous.
Hung was too too bad last night-- aside from his whole-- "I don't expect to win anything with such a close minded judge!" I thought his cereal oompa loompa land was clever! lol and what was with that judge-- he dropped the F bomb A LOT. And I'm glad Brian won the quickfire-- maybe that will teach them to be so snotty toward spam.

One Nut is gone...sigh. He and Hung were my picks for final 2. I know it may not be popular, but now I am gunning for Casey, Dale and Hung final 3, let Dale and Casey fight for the 2nd spot next to Hung. Casey's stepped it up recently.
I was REALLY hoping weasel-face Malarky would go this week...can't stand him or his attitude. I thought it was so rude how he kept saying he was shocked to be standing there in bottom 3 and then he said something to the judges like, "I am so tired of seeing you guys under these circumstances." Somehow, it's more charming when Hung is an egotistical douchenozzle.
Again this week, the judges were CRANKY, no? Like One Nut said, they were about at the level of character attack during Judge's Table. Maybe they hate flying.
And finally, let me just say, if you are a fucking chef and you can't pronounce the word MASCARPONE correctly, you should PACK YOUR FUCKING KNIVES AND GO! MAS-CARP-OH-NAY. IT'S NOT HARD! Why does every dimwit (including Giada DeLaurentis who is Italian, for heaven's sake) pronounce it MAR-SCAH-POH-NAY?!? It's not spelled that way! And don't even get me started on chipotle and sherbet.

Sorry, Brian "Nervous-Giggle" Malarky is soooo annoying I would have been really glad to see him go home over Dale. I managed to stay up last night and catch a rerun of Top Chef. Maybe it was just tricky editing, but it seemed to me that Padma really didn't want to kick CJ off. When Tom turned it over to her, she had a pained look on her face. Then, when she asked him to pack his knives and go, she said it very quickly, like she was ripping off a band-aid to get it over with. She also had a sad look on her face when he walked out.
After watching, I did feel bad for CJ. Being told you have the WORST of something in Top Chef history has to be a huge blow to the ego. Poor guy. :(
I can definitely see it coming down to Casey and Hung. Casey has REALLY stepped up her game lately, and she doesn't annoy me nearly as much as she did in the beginning. And Hung is being an ass again.

He's baaaaack. Friggin Hung and his cockiness. He literally made me sick last night. Ugh. And when he got in front of the judges and said he had to plate all by himself? Boo fucking Hoo. It's a competition and you never help anybody and you're going to bitch about them being too busy preparing their dishes to help you?? Seriously? I wish someone would have called him out.
Casey has really stepped up her game, and the way I see it, she should have won the quickfire and the elimination challenge. In my opinion, the guest judge was a sexist. He CLEARLY said Casey's dish was the closest during the quickfire and everyone else LOVED her elimination dish... I think he just didn't want to say a woman could win. :sneaky:
I'm so ready for this season to be over because it's starting to suck. An exciting final challenge would have been Tre vs Hung but they made the bonehead move of letting Tre go. This season hasn't been about great food, it's been about who messes up the worst. At this point in the game, you shouldn't be serving raw chicken TWICE. Dale doesn't deserve to be there and neither does Brian. Both of them are only there because others messed up worse than they have.

I thought it was beyond bogus that they were asking Hung how to cook the fish dish at Le Cirque and I was behind him telling them to suck it. It's a competition dumbasses! Why should he tell you how to do it when he just rocked it hard core? And Sara is a moron, saying that her piece of fish must have been thicker than everyone else's and that's why she wasn't able to get it cooked through. YOU'RE THE CHEF! All pieces of fish won't be the same thickness--figure out how to cook them, sweetie, or get out of any kitchen I will be eating food from!
I don't see now how it can't be a Casey/Hung finale. Dale has admitted more than once that he sucks, and he does. And Brian is just irritating as fuck and really hasn't begun to prove himself. I am all for Hung winning. I am glad he is cocky, but I tend to like the cocky contestants. I loved Melrose on ANTM too. At least he has a reason to believe in himself.

I would recommend reading Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain, who is of course often featured on this season of Top Chef. It's a fantastic book and I have to say that Hung is a pretty good example of what chefs at top restaurants are really like. They are cocky, sneaky, and they do for themselves. Of course according to AB they also are vile cursing creatures, much like AB himself. I guess I figure Hung isn't just trying to make great TV, he is being who he's always been, and that's part of the reason why he makes such great food. I've heard the other contestants talk a lot of smack about him as a person, but never his food.

For a while there I thought Dale was gonna win.. I'da shit. Those judges really turned on Casey. That fat-faced Gail was against everything she did. Tom was a prick over Hung's lobster and that's when I thought Dale was the shoe-in. Hung was declared the winner cuz he used foam!
... I was glad to see Rocco... he's even cuter now that he's lost a few pounds.
I enjoyed this season of Top Chef and am happy with the outcome.

I can't believe it came down to Hung & DALE. I thought for sure it would be either him or Casey. Dale sucked it all season. I did feel bad for Casey, choking in the bottom of the 9th.
And I'd totally hit Rocco. Yummy.

I am glad it was a Hung win, but it really didn't seem to me like Casey sucked as bad as they made it out to be. They didn't say one nice thing to her at Judge's Table, or at least didn't edit one nice comment in, even though they praised her 4th dish when eating it. Probably because they attributed that to the wonders of Howie. HAHAHA.
Hung was a gracious winner, and I was just glad it wasn't Dale.
By the way, Rocco has had a major eye lift and it creeps me out.
Also, Padma, Rocco, and Michelle Bernstein (Casey's celeb sous chef) all used to host the old Food Network show "The Melting Pot"--does anyone else remember this but me?

I"m glad I didn't bother watching the end of this season. Seeing Hung win would have been too much for me. If one more assholish prick of a male wins another reality show, I might have to do something drastic. Like stop watching tv and get a life.

Calm down Angie - that's just crazy talk. I'm worried about you. Someone quick send Angie the DVD set of Big Brother 2 oooh and Survivor 1 - STAT!

I know Hung could be a jerk at times, but he also seemed to be pretty nice and funny at times, and at the end, the other cheftestants seemed to genuinely like him. I think in the chef world, it's common to be around big egos, frantic running, and saying your stuff is the best. Was he really an asshole?
Maybe I am just saying this because if you stop watching TV, Ang, I lose on of my favorite gasmii and also the other gal here with the best taste in men (besides me, duh). Or maybe I have been beaten into submission by the Dick's and the Jeffrey Sebelia's of the reality world, and so compared to those asshats, Hung seems as sweet as my little old granny.

I was so happy when Hung won! But I was even happier when Marcellus (sp?) stormed the stage and picked him up in a giant bear hug.
I think their cooking show might have a chance...

Was Hung really that bad? I mean compared to other "villains" of reality TV, he was pretty tame. Cocky, yes? But he never threatened to anally rape anyone until they bled. He didn't poop on someone's bed. He didn't throw down another contestant and try to shave him bald. He didn't cheat or steal. He was just arrogant. And it made me laugh when he refused to accept any criticism. So certain he was of his own superiority! He cracked me up.
I'm glad he won!! Go my little Vietnamese Wonder, go!!!

When you put it that way Pegster, you just might have a point. Hung was arrogant but you sort of have to be to get anywhere on a show like that. I liked Casey but she seemed to fall apart on that last challange. I love it that you call him your Vietnamese Wonder!:)

I like Hung and I want him to get to final two. Then I want him to create the best dish in the history of Top Chef and I want him to KNOW he did.
You are so nice Jampony, and you predicted it... his meal was 3 star.... Ilan never got that.... Ilan sucked.

Ha I think he used two foams!!! and that lobster was Dales... not Hung, Tom said he would order and eat any of Hungs dishes but he would not eat the lobster dish that he took one bite of .... Dale made that mistake. And one thing they did not talk about was the scallop that they loved, that Dale admitted was a 50%50% collaboration, (which was a lie, CJ did it all) Dale should not have had credit for that dish either.

Lennon, I am happy your brought this up... and that I was not the only one to see Monkey Bioy there. I think his new title has to be abraham Monkeyboy Lincoln now though.. did you get a look at the facial hair on him????????? And did you see the way Padma froze him out at the end of the show.... what a bitch.

I am in totally happiness with this decision......... Hung was consistantly the working machine on this show.. and if they did not like his food he just understood how confused the judges were... he did not disrespect anyone like Howie and some of the others... I still wish Tre was in the final two. And Bunny Foo Foo, she didn't deserve it because she absolutely crashed and burned............ and then blamed the altitude, Howie, time, the ingredients, the lack of leeks, the judges, the kitchen.... for her loss....
oh happy day.......

Really great article in the Fort Worth paper today about Casey. The pictures with the article are great.
Funny was that I was sitting at WHATABURGER eating breakfast reading the article and happened to glance around and see that several people were reading the article besides me.

I hated Hung at the beginning of the season, but as the show went on, I saw it as his way of getting to the top - make no friends, and just keep your eye on the prize.

I saw the reunion. It almost seemed like Padma was gonna take C.J. home with her after the show. She seemed to really be diggin' him.

Too funny. My thoughts exactly!
I also loved it when the host asked Clay which one was his favorite challenge. Ouch! The poor guy only made it to the first show.

Casey also seemed very disinterested the entire show. Perhaps she was carrying a grudge. It just seemed like she didn't want to be there.

Casey was making the sucking lemons face throughout the whole reunion. Look here, chica, I wanted you to win too but you choked in the final challenge. Nobody to blame for that other than yourself!!!
