Decided to stick with the episode name as the title because I figured "Roger Work Man, father of the year" would be a little too crass. But he totally beats out Alec Baldwin and David Hasselhoff.
I sooo wanted to clap when Locke got shot, maybe if it was last week or a few eps ago, but he started to redeem himself a bit. Why or why couldn't Jack be the one that got shot?!?
And Ben? Total fuckin' nutjob.
I was hoping for Sawyer/Sayid laying the smackdown on Jack/Juliet. So I was kinda let down in that regard.
"The original inhabitants"... So screw Dharma, now we have to figure out who the others were. Nice.
So was Dharma just a bunch of hippies?
Shollia
05-09-2007, 10:39 PM
Looks like they were just a bunch of hippies that saw that the island was special somehow, but weren't expecting the natives to turn violent on their butts.
And please tell me I wasn't the only one that got totally freaking creeped out when Locke heard "Help me"... good lord.. it raised the hairs on the back of my neck.
And WTH was up with Richard? not aging???

I was seriusly shocked to see locke get shot. That was one of the best episodes, especially after such a blah season. And yes i was completely creeped out, not only from what locke heard, but from that whole scene with "jacob". So are we expected to believe that "jacob" has been this unseen force on the island, like when the pilot was killed and the smoky thing? I wonder if locke is going to be one the deaths this season, and one can only hope charlie is the other one. I heard they were gonna kill of jack because he had movie deals and wanted out. Hope everyone else enjoyed as much as i did

Jacob was sitting in that chair. Didn't see him until I watched a second time.
What a great episode..... I don't want Locke to be dead..... that was not what I expected.
Ben sits right there in the van while Dad dies..wow, what a cold hearted bastard......gotta digest all this....Richard is the biggest mystery of all.

He Was really sitting there, what did he look like? Gosh i wish i had tivo or dvr. coldhearted yes, but what is it when you tell your own son that you forget his birthday bcause he only remembers is as the day he killed his wife? im not sure which is worse, but i guess ben was right, he had to put up with his father his whole life, which probably drove him to it. not much different from what locke did to his own father, which we all applauded im sure

I think there were a few hints about not aging on the island tonight. First there was Richard who looks like he's been the same age for quite some time now. And then there was the bunny. Is it the same one that we saw earlier this season? Perhaps. If anyone knows about Joop, we know that there's an orangutan that's 150 years old that's an experiment of the Hanso Foundation. Could the bunny be part of similar testing?

I had totally forgotten about that rabbit! I mean I forgot about it when he showed it to Sawyer in that episode where they faked him out...

just one question for Roger; why would you take a woman who is seven months pregnant hiking in the woods alone?? especially in the late 50s/early60s. that just seems even stupider than blaming your son for his mothers death.
such HUGE parallels between Ben and Locke now, so im keeping my fingers crossed that Locke will survive. all through the episode i was saying "yes! Locke is a total badass again! i love it!" then i couldnt speak for like a half hour after he got shot :(
oh and still, nothing on how anyone originally found the island. it seems like a lot of people are randomly turning up on this island that has so many "natural" fortifications. i want some answers please, show!

I love how it's increasingly becoming obvious that the writers haven't been jerking us around needlessly these past few months. The "throwaway" episode with Hurley, Sawyer, Jin and the van actually had a purpose. Ditto the bunny. They're tying things back in nicely.
What happened to Annie? Did Ben let the "hostiles" kill her too? I'm sure she'll be coming in to the story soon.
Locke CAN'T be dead, can he?

I hope Locke is not dead! I hope he comes back to life like the patch guy. I loved when he beat him up. That was awesome. I love that he is demading answers from that evil creep Ben.
I was wondering what happened to Annie too. He probably killed her too.
I think that invisible "Jacob" is being locked up by Ben somehow. That is why he was so freaked out by Locke hearing him.
I really hate Ben and wish someone would kill him already!
What's up with Richard? Why did he never age and how did Ben get the upper hand with him?

I was also wondering about the ageless people. But maybe its not so much that they don't age,but they may just stay the same physically. Kinda far fetched, but hurley has kept all that weight on despite walking around a jungle (especially in these last few episodes). Im sure ben killed annie to, i was kinda confused when he went and stared at the face of the man that got his father the job. Is it just me or did his suit say Hanso. And whats with the last name godspeed?
eaburns
05-10-2007, 08:53 AM
I think the guys last name was "Goodspeed". Locke is most definity NOT dead. They keep saying the last episode is going to be a Locke/Jack showdown. I am starting to wonder about Sayid and Charlie dieing too. It almost seems like there has been SOOO much talk about them dieing, that it is all hype. The writers keep bringing in so much for information, I almost need a notebook to keep up with everything!

Do you think Ben asked Richard if he remembered birthdays because Richard never has any?
Locke can't be dead, he has nine lives like a cat. Other sites are saying that the man in the chair has Locke's profile. Maybe that's why Ben was so interested in John from the beginning. He looks like Jacob and now that Locke has heard Jacob and knows he's real, he had to kill him. I don't think Ben expected Locke to hear or see anything.
....and didn't the lantern fall off the table and break, starting the fire....Ben hung it back up when he came out of the cabin.
Me and my dumb questions.....
....and didn't the lantern fall off the table and break, starting the fire....Ben hung it back up when he came out of the cabin.

chooch I thought the same thing! He definitely lit the lantern before they went in, right? Unless he grabbed an extra lantern that was already in the cabin after the other one broke, because they needed one to get back through the jungle.
Gah! All the other mysteries and questions on this show, and they make me wonder about friggin lantern continuity.

I didn't like this episode--until locke got shot. You could see it coming though but it was a relief because locke has become an uninteresting character. Who was Ben's dad? He seemed so familiar, from another comedy movie, I think he was will ferrells dad from taladega nights. Anyway that ep sucked

Ben'd dad was Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite. Will Ferrell's dad was Gary Cole, aka Lumbergh from Office Space.

I think considering what the hostiles and ben did, it's no wonder that the island let ben get cancer and started offing pregnant woman. And that might explain why Ben was pushing Locke to kill his own father.

If the hostiles (Richard) are native to the island, then where did the connection to Hanso begin?
Hm that is an excellent point.... if the Hostiles were basically forest dwellers, how did they grow to become so powerful as to have so much access to information and ability to make things happen (e.g. juliet's ex getting run over). how did they get all the technology and money that they have now?? Even if they had taken over all the stuff that was left over on the island from Dharma, how did they get so rich and powerful? And what the hell have they been doing all this time since they took over Dharma?
And why couldn't they just knock on the Pylons like good neighbors and say "excuse me Dharma people, perhaps we can work out some kind of agreement" instead of just blowing shit up? That's what kills me about this show.. none of these fuckin people can just have a normal, straight interaction with anyone. Someone asks a simple yes or no question and all they get are cryptic non-answers like 'only time will tell" and "its not my place to say etc. Even last week, when Sawyer asked locke if it was true that he'd been paralyzed, why couldn't locke just say "yes its true"? why'd he have to give sawyer that stupid little look and say "not anymore"? NO SHIT its not true anymore, we've all seen you walking you fucktard, so why can't you just answer the fucking question without being an asshole? ARGH this show is driving me to madness. And yet I have to know what happens...

1. Locke's father
2. Ben's mommy
3. Roger Workman
4. Locke (although he probably isn't really dead)
5. Would the entire Dharma camp count as one? Maybe none of the Losties are going?
Could Nikki and Paolo count as 4 and 5?
Should this be in the spoiler discussion?

Now Ben's birthday is on the same day as his mom AND his dad's death..... and if the plane crashed in September and it's been about 3 months, wouldn't Ben's birthday be in December. Kinda cold in Portland, Oregon that time of year......but really the sign just said Portland, not the state and there's lots of Portlands...... maybe Portland, Hawaii.

Chooch, the only thing that would make me think it's Portland Oregon is from that episode "Not In Portland", Alpert approaches Juliet about the job at Mittelos at their Portland, Oregon facility. Obviously she never gets to Oregon though. Portland seems to be an important city in this show. I dunno where I'm going with this, but yeah, that's what I though of :)

Thanks for clearing that up, Bevo. I couldn't remember where I had seen him before and it was driving me crazy.
My favorite part of the episode was seeing Ben in the "work man" uniform, that just cracked me up.
No wonder Ben is such a weirdo. Being raised by a drunk and told you killed your mother just by being born wouldn't make you a well-adjusted adult.

I think Ben's question re: birthdays was about the no-aging thing about the fact that the gassing happened on his birthday too.
A couple of theories have been floating around about the "hostiles" and how they might not be who we think they are. The fact that they seemed to pick up on all the technology that Dharma has might mean that Dharma brought them there with them to study them and the effects that the island has on them. It would make more sense as to why they now have control of all the stuff that's on the island but the Hanso Foundation hasn't done anything about it. They may have threatened to expose them if they didn't leave them alone.
My extremely long theory on the whole Ben & Jacob thing that will probably end up being wrong:
Ben is/was special and could see and talk to Jacob when no one else could. Then he did something to piss Jacob off and now he can no longer talk to Jacob. (Why else would he want to know what he said Locke?) He suspected that Locke was special like he was/is and decided to trick him to see how much he can manipulate him. His father pretty much had nothing to do with it, he just wanted to see if he would go so far as to commit murder in order to belong and feel like he was special too. He lets Locke talk him in to taking him to Jacob and figures if Locke really is special and can see Jacob, he can talk him into forming a team and they can continue to dominae the others. If he's not special, then he can kill him (he can't let him go back and tell everyone that Jacob doesn't exist) and continue pretending he's the only one who can talk to Jacob and nobody will know that he's lying.

Ben's dad (aka Uncle Rico) was also Laslo from Real Genius (the guy who lived in the closet).
Also, the main hippie guy Horace was played by Doug Hutchison - he was the A-hole guard in the Green Mile

any one else kinda think "Jacob" might be more than one person?? like Locke sees one version of Jacob and Ben sees another? because otherwise why wouldnt Ben have heard what Jacob said to Locke and Locke not have heard the original conversation Ben had with Jacob?
and since everyone seems to say that Jacob looks so much like Locke could it be possible that Jacob is some pychological isalnd manifestation of thier own selves? because that would go along with the 'magic box' idea and how Locke/Jacob brought Lockes Dad to the island (i forget who was finally said to have 'brought' him there)
OH! and if "Jacob isnt somone you go to, Jacob is somone youre summoned to" how exactly does Ben know hes the only one who can hear/see him? because if no one else knows how to get to him its not like Ben has tested the rest of the Others to see who can/cant talk to Jacob.
just some thoughts. im probably over analyzing. but then again there was a conversation about lantern continuity;)

Hey, first post here, but I've had a nagging theory for a couple of weeks that I wanted to throw out there. This hit me when Naomi mentioned that all the bodies are still on the plane. Clones. Could all of our "survivors" be clones of people that died on the flight? The Others harvested their DNA (or whatever fake science the writers dream up) and made clones of them, memories intact. The crash would have been staged then. This would explain Locke's healing, since it was an injury not genetic. It would certainly explain Naomi's statement. Now it could explain the two versions of Richard and why Ben made the comment about birthdays to him. Do clones celebrate "birth" days? Not to mention all the dead people turning up and people that aren't supposed to be on the island being there.
I know its a long shot, but with all the crap going on the island it makes as much sense as anything else I guess. What say yous?
chooch850
05-11-2007, 11:18 AM
Let me first say welcome to the forums Ryabusa and glad you posted. Cloning has been thrown out there before. Some seem to think that is why there is so much interest in fertility. If clones could reproduce it would create a pure species. I personally have my doubts, but it is definitely something to think about.
I hope you continue to join us in our discussions.

Canada gets it at 8:00 on CTV, then ABC shows it (in both Canada and the US) at 10:00. There are a few other shows that we get before the States too -- Heroes, for example, and while it was on, Studio 60 was a whole day earlier.

Chooch, thanks for the welcome. I definitely plan on hanging around. I figured there was no way I was the first to think of cloning, but those recent events really made me start thinking about it. I suppose cloning is as good of an explanation as any (GRR Damn you Lost writers for making us grasp for straws like this!). But... I think the airplane crash could have been staged easily using other bodies. They didn't have to be clones, the crash was at the bottom of the ocean. I don't think they tested the bodies DNA, they just saw that the body count was correct and figured since it was the same airplane(actually just an identical one) and in a location that made sense, it must be that flight. Who knows anymore.. I'm too exhausted to try and figure anything out anymore :(

Yeah, the big flaw with my theory is "why in the hell would they choose this group of morally corrupt misfits to clone?" I mean, if they are going to clone a plane full of people I've got to think that most planes aren't full of people that want to kill there fathers. Those passengers would probably make for better cloning.

yeah but if youre going to clone people and havent exactly perfected the science of cloning yet who better to kill (assuming the plane crash was staged for the purposes of cloning) than a group of morally corrupt misfits whom very few people would actually miss. because really, Desmond is the only one that we've seen somone searching for, and he wasnt even on the plane.
it would also explain why Ben wouldnt let Juliet test her fertility-ness on women who concieved off-island, because women from the 'real-world' wouldnt be clones
