I’m so glad Miami Ink is being reviewed, it’s such an interesting show that I think has been overlooked a lot. Anyway I’m going to try and do the tattoos justice! So first up is Brianna who has a gun fetish. Brianna’s basically obsessed with guns, so much that she wants one permanently holstered on her hip. Her love of guns started when she was a little girl and her grandfather dazzled her with tales of blowing stuff up in the army and her dad showed her how to use them. Safe.
It always amuses me when the someone walks into the shop and goes, “ I want a tattoo.” They are in a tattoo shop, on a show about tattoos, what do they think they want?
Next up is Samantha, who walks into the store saying, “I want to get a tattoo.” You are in a tattoo shop on a show about tattoos, what do they think you want? Sam sports one blue half-sleeve that looks like someone watercolored it onto her arm. I guess her 7 year daughter, Tabatha painted it. I know Ami wanted to ask her how old she when she revealed her daughters age. Anyway she’s getting a cute owl tat to commemorate her grandma, an eccentric lady who love. Samantha also states “I’ve never had a tattoo that was nice.” Even the one dedicated to my kid. That one’s just badass.
Some random footage of people in South Beach in bikinis with tattoos.
In comes Matt, also known as “Beard Man,” soon shortened simply to “Beard.” The dude is completely obsessed with beards, and proclaims “I love beards.” Right. His brilliant idea is to get a back piece that is a huge portrait of his idol, the guy with the longest beard EVER. This is so creepy. You just can’t escape the beard on this guy, front and back. When the tattoo is done it looks like old beard man is going to jump off Matt’s back and do some crazy lasso-ing with his rope beard.
While all this is going on, there’s a new guy in the shop for the week, Tim Hendrix. Tim is a wandering tattoo artist, friend of the guys and former mentor of Kat. I would like to state that I miss Kat, since a female tattoo artist did bring a different dynamic to the group and she was pretty awesome. Tim looks like a cross between Ed Norton and Colin Farrell, covered in tattoos, of course. His specialty is portraits, and his first assignment is for a young couple whos baby passed away from SIDS. The father wants his son’s face tattooed on his shoulder, and although portrait tattoos generally creep me out, this one is sweet.
Some footage of Ami playing with his giant puppy Bella in the park, some footage of Garver showing his tattoo of his dad’s face directly above his nipple, which is extremely distracting to me and I wouldn’t think would be the best spot to remember his dad, but I guess he didn’t have room anywhere else. It just looks so real.
Tim gets Garver to finish a huge cobra he started on his stomache a year ago. I don’t know why he waited a whole year to finish it, it seems like a pretty big thing to just wait around for. There are some issues regarding a mole right in the middle, but it doesn’t affect the scales of the cobra. We learn that Tim got this tat to remind himself of his journey to Bali, where he played on the beach and drank cobra blood. Yum.
It turns out Beard’s ultimate goal is to win gold at the World Beard Championships, in the freestyle category. He’s so dedicated to it that he prays to his bearded hero every night and goes through a rigorous beard grooming routine every day. Lofty goals, my man and lets hope your back inspires you to never cut your hair, but still to wash it.
After Garver tattooes Tim, Tim keeps the cycle going by tattooing hands and the word “Auntie” on Darrens neck. Darren’s really psyched to have a tribute to his aunt the nun on his neck.
The last customer of the day is male model Zack, who gives us a heartbreaking confessional about how hard the modeling world is as he gets a rather ugly technicolor seraph angel in the middle of his back. That ought to help him feel beautiful.
This show always gets me thinking of what I would get if I wasn’t such a wuss, and invariably led to a discussion with my roommate. I’ve always wanted a few little starts somewhere, what you get?
