Right now I'm hooked on these veggie subs from Quiznos. I'm chowing them like twice a week.

Guacamole, black olives, lettuce, tomato, red onion, mushrooms, mozzarella, cheddar, Red Wine Vinaigrette Dressing...

You're the first person I know who says they "love" pierogis, except for me. But if I'm going to eat pierogis I'm going all out and having the sauerkraut, Polish sausage, boiled potatos, dumplings... the works! I can eat that weekly. I can't help it... I'm Polish, Irish and German. It's in my blood. Anyway, what's your favorite pierogi? I'm partial to cheese (with butter and sugar) and, of course, potato and onion.

My absolute favorite food: mashed potatos with lots of butter and sour cream. Can't get enough.

You know how every family has their own dishes they serve together? For example, when I was a kid, pot roast was always served with carrots, potatoes and onions roasted in the same pan as the beef.

I worked at a place once where we had a contest to see whose family combination was the oddest.

The winner, hands down, was the guy who said his family's favorite was macaroni and cheese......

served over mashed potatoes.

I can feel my arteries closing, just thinking about that.

My fave is potato and cheese. With butter and onions on the top. My friend makes them from scratch (or buys Mrs. T's) and brings them to the bar for the Steelers games. :) I don't like the other Polish food though. My Polish friend from grade school had a tradition in her family to have potato pancakes with cottage cheese. They used to invite me over to eat 'cuz my mom didn't cook much. I always eat them like that now.

My Italian family makes these fried bread things every year for Christmas. We call them zepplins and they're yummy! I have the recipe, but I'm afraid to try and make them for myself b/c it involves heating up a lot of oil to fry them in and I might burn my apt. down. I don't cook much either.:o

I've got my own countdown going - three and a half weeks until I get to Maine and start eating LOBSTER! There is nothing tastier than a lobster that has been caught that same day, less than a mile offshore of where we are staying, and then boiled in a pot of seawater from our own beach. Oh, and lots and lots of butter. Maybe with a baked potato on the side with MORE butter and a heap of cheese. And then finish it all off with something chocolate.

I did not eat lobster until I was 20 years old and I have spent the last ten years making up for it!

I grew up eating (and loathing) a whole foods, plant based diet that was largely made up of ethnic foods from a variety of traditions. I'm happy to say that at about 16 I started thinking about and appreciating the TLC that was my mom's cooking. I haven't had fast food in over 15 years. So now I'll eat anything as long as it's real food. My cravings include: tuna and salmon sashimi, any kind of sushi or nori rolls, anything Mexican (especially tamales, which I can't find anywhere, so I have to make them and it takes forever), anything Peruvian, Cajun, Indian (I especially love palak paneer which is a spicy spinach sauce with homemade cheese cubes floating in it), boiled lobster w/ drawn butter, egg salad, vegetarian lasagna, and homemade mac & cheese with plenty of surface area to ensure lots of crispiness in each serving. Now, I don't crave these things all at once. But I will all of a sudden feel like "If I don't have a shrimp tempura roll within the hour I'm gonna die." Therein lies the tamale problem. I'll desperately need them, but it takes 2 or 3 hours to make them. At any rate, I love me some food. I'm also a cookbook junkie. I can flip through the pages of a cookbook for hours.

LQ- you can get tamales EVERYWHERE in Texas! I think that some places even ship them at Christmastime. Maybe that will help with your cravings. :)

Our family makes tamales at Christmas, they have been doing it since my dad was a little kid. I still have a few in my freezer from last Christmas - and now that you have reminded me, I'm going to take them out and have them for breakfast on Saturday. My favorite way to eat them is with eggs - that way you can dip the masa in the yolk. Hmmm, maybe I won't wait until Saturday!

And I finished the Gene Wilder book, very good, a very pleasant distraction during a difficult week. Thanks for the recommendation!

I don't think there's ever been this much perogie love in one space ever. Well maybe except for the perogie races during the 7th inning of the Pittsburgh Pirates games (the have to get people to go there somehow).

Peruvian food and palak paneer? Oh LQ, i think you may be my long lost sister. Which makes what happened at the CT Happy hour that much more inappropriate.

I also am a fiend for anything ethnic. Spicy Indian, afghani food, Peruvian (love me some beef hearts!), mexican (I live near an authentic mexican place that autally has tamales, but i never know how to eat them so I never order them. I end up eating the husks. I go fo the chicken mole), hungarian, sushi, sashimi, greek lamb skewers, ceviche, paella. And I love shellfish. But not oysters. I have texture issues with that.

And of course some good old irish food. Bangers and mash, corned beef and cabbage.

And a hot dog from Pink's is looking good right about now.

Lobster - Puerto Nuevo style...

Just south of the border - down Mexico way.
Near Rosarito Beach is a place called Puerto Nuevo...fresh caught lobster, split lengthwise and grilled on a BBQ. Served family style with overflowing bowls of refried beans, rice, Mexican slaw and homemade flour tortillas. You make your own burritos with the butter saturated crustaceans and sides. Wash it all down with a Corona and lime ~~

That is the exact same lobster experience that we have, but we add some freshly dug clams to the pot. If we have room for dessert, it might be a berry shortcake.

While I do love lobster, I'd have to say that for me, the most perfect food is the potato. Baked, boiled, fried, stuffed, scalloped, mashed (especially mashed), in a periogi, in a pancake, in a bag of chips...I love me some podaders.

I am going to second the person who said they love sushi. Didn't try it until I was 18, and never really had a lot of it until I moved to Los Angeles, but now, watch out! I also love macaroni and cheese, and I absolutely love lobster bisque.

I need to throw a word in the mix for perogies as well.I remember in high school, I was taking some class and the discussion somehow turned to perogies and which flavor of Mrs. T's we liked the best. The teacher said we were all idiots because the best perogies were the ones that they made at her church and so the next week we set up a taste test to compare Mrs. t's with the homemade stuff. Mrs T's won!

Beverage-wise, my favorites are Dr. Pepper, vitamin water, and the Arnold Palmer (lemonade and ice tea mix).

sg-dub and I went to Goal last week for the world cup. The food was good but you are right about the service. It took forever. Mrs sg-dub called the leftovers “Chinese food on top of French fries” which is kind of what some of it is like.

I’ve had takeout from Pioline. Some weird dish with a bed of lettuce with potatoes cheese and a boiled egg on top. Eh, when in Rome…

Victorio's Grille on Maple Avenue is also good but the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. Still, when all the local Peruvians are there to eat, you know it’s good.

Monte Alban on Farmington Ave is the mexican place I go to. It's literally almost across the stret from my apartment. Right next to Tisane. It's a small family owned place that everyone I know in the area, including me, swears by. Authentic mexican food, not that tex-mex crap. It takes people by surprise when they see the options of beef tongue for their tacos as well as chicken and beef. I also recommend the Jamaican flower water.

They are opening an Ethiopian and Etritian restaurant right next door that I am looking foward to as well.

Carrabas is good, good food and great service. I also used to love Amalfi's a little hole in the wall Italian place with the best pizza in Orlando- sadly they closed up and left. Broke my heart.

tried ketchup fries while visiting friends in Boston, ddn't care for them too much either. They seem to be popular in the Northeast, as i also saw them at a local supermarket in Maine (don't see them very often in NY). Samynoodle, i have to agree w/ u---the very idea of pickle-flavored chips is stomach turning. blech! I did however try some tasty 'aioli' flavored chips in Italy---i thnk it's a combo of garlic & olive oil & mayo---not as stinky as u mite thnk.

I prefer salty foods to sweet ones---will choose chips & Cheesy puffs (my fave) over cakes and pastries.

Not a particular fan of chocolate either (gasp!) although I have enjoyed good chocolate, such as Lindt's (i think that's the brand name) & another Swedish brand that has to be refrigerated. But I don't usually crave chocolate or eat candy bars very often, but maybe that has 2 do with the quality of the chocolates.

Fave foods include a nice, big juicy steak, spicy chicken wings & my favorite ingredients are garlic, tomato (real, garden-grown, sweet like the fruit it-should-be tomatoes), lemon & olive oil. I especially enjoyed these during my Italy, where they were in abundant supply. Oh, on this same trip i also had truffles----yummy!!

lastly, i will not turn down ice cream, who can resist? strawberry is my fave but i recently discovered a Haagen-Daaz pint of 'white chocolate/raspberry swirl' mix---check it out if u get the chance!

That would be my father-in-law. I won't even be in the kitchen until those poor babies are done. Even at our place, the F-I-L comes up from his house and gets them started for us, and since the kitchen in our house opens to the living/dining room, I have to go outside and sit on the deck!

My fave summer craving is fresh tomatoes and mozzareela cheese. I had some yesterday from the deli, but it's best at in Italian restaurant when the cheese is soft and the vinagrette is homemade. That also makes me think of the Italian restaurants where they have the flavored olive oil to dunk your bread in. it's the best. there's a place in Pgh. called Bravos that my siblings and I like. My mom used to to do the same thing at that Primanti's! I love that one along with the one in Oakland and Southside. I also miss Mad Mex with their $5 22 oz margaritas. Pomegranate was the best. It was so tart you couldn't taste the alcohol.

MMMM Bravo. And yes, they do use real butter but if you ask the waitperson for some to take home they'll give it to you. If you ever get take out from there, they give you sample size amounts. Just make sure you're going directly home and put it in the fridge. Or else it's gross.

Thanks to Samynoodle and Zoobabe for reminding me about Bravo's. I don't think I have been there at all this year. Once, at Bravos, I had a tuna steak cooked with lemon, butter, and capers that was the best piece of fish I have ever eaten.

My fave dessert is Tiramisu. Bravos' tiramisu is pretty good. The one I make myself is the best, though it takes all day to make. (I'm not just being boastful, I get more compliments on that dessert than anything else I have ever made.)

But the thing that I love absolutely the most is homemade pasta sauce. I have dreams about my Grandma's sauce. She left me her recipe, but it is never as good as when I was a kid.

That would be my father-in-law. I won't even be in the kitchen until those poor babies are done. Even at our place, the F-I-L comes up from his house and gets them started for us, and since the kitchen in our house opens to the living/dining room, I have to go outside and sit on the deck!

It's a horrible task that was particularly horrifying last year when the lid flew off the top of the pot and one claw was raised in the steam. We were screaming (me and my 2 sisters - the kids were outside, thank God!). I had to stand there and hold the lid down for what was probably the longest minute of my life.

But then we ate them and all of that was forgotten.

EEK! So it does happen! My friends and I were planning to boil the lobsters at my apartment this weekend and then one said... in that matter-of-fact-urban-myth tone that the claws can shoot up mid boil...while i was a bit skeptical about it then, i'm totally converted now.... we opted to have them cooked at the stop'n'shop...

All you lobster lovers will hate this story. My co-worker just moved to a new house, as a house warming gift her boss asked me to get her something from Lobstergram. He said to spend a few hundred, get her the whole nine yards. I figured he must know that she loves lobster to make such an investment - I personally, would have a heart attack if someone delivered live lobsters to my house.

Well I placed the order and it was delivered to her home. I got her the deluxe surf and turf for 4 - https://www.livelob.com/lobstergram/shop?method=category&catid=ST-STD it was gonna come with everything!

Cut to the day it was sent. I got a frantic phone call from her - "Melanie, please tell me there are not live lobsters in this box!!" Um... "there are 4 1lb live lobsters in that box Mary". She then shrieked for a few moments. She was in a panic. She kept asking me what she was meant to do with them. She said they are glorified over grown red cockroaches. And it turns out her husband was just as squeamish.

What they ended up doing (and this will just KILL all of you) was taking the box to the local Publix (grocery store) and having the Publix fish department guy open it, remove the lobster, and give the box back. They just gave it to him! Didn't even ask for store credit. And he didn't put them in the store stock - he took em home for his own family. Who can blame him? That was a couple hundred dollars worth of lobster.

On a side note - She did say the steaks were the best she's ever had.

Wait a minute...they didn't have a neighbor or something who would appreciate some fabulous free lobsters? I can't believe that they actually got into their car and drove the lobsters to the local supermarket!

Anyway...
I had to google pierogies..I wasn't even sure what they were and you guys were making me hungry! I found out a store right down the road has the Mrs T's potato and cheese ones so they will be in my freezer tomorrow Every supermarket around here (Northeast US) has pierogi's in the regular freezer section, in multiple varieties! They're fantastic, definitely a staple in our household! They're great boiled, with just a little butter on top...or with red sauce...or with veggies...or with meat as a side dish, etc. They're a very versatile item! Delicious, too.

Hmmm...favorite foods? I don't even know where to begin! I'm picky, but I do love food. Pretty much all of the foods that I love are bad for me. Which is why I no longer weigh 100 pounds. Sigh...

-Boston Creme Pie (and The Gingerbread House's Boston Creme Muffins...yum)
-Lobster Bisque (pref. in a bread bowl)
-Zucchini Bread
-Steak/Mashed Potatoes/Squash or Sweet Potato
-My husband's Creamed Salmon w/ peas over mashed potatoes
-Pillsbury Cinnamon rolls w/ frosting
-I actually love/crave a good salad...especially in the summer. Cobb salad's are great, or grilled chicken with cashew's...yum
-Chinese food...the good stuff, not too "Americanized"...and Dim Sum Shao Mai (sp?), California rolls, and Crab Rangoon is a weakness
-Coca Cola Classic...I've tried and tried and tried to give it up!!! At this point, I figure that if I drink it over ice, at least I'm getting the water from the ice cubes :p
-Mexican food ... but not tummy-hurting Taco Bell! The good stuff. We've got a VERY good authentic Mexican restaurant in the city where I live, so we're spoiled!
-Peanut Butter Captain Crunch cereal
-raw chocolate chip cookie dough (I know, I know...hey, I've lived this long, I don't think it's done me any harm!)

However...that said? We just got a new, fancy refrigerator...and I went out and filled it with healthy foods! And I also went out and bought 3 new cookbooks. So I'm determined to get healthier in the next year. Wish me luck! :o

Last year most members of my family received pierogi Christmas ornaments. What could be better than to make an ornament out of a beloved snack food?

Here's the link to the Polish Art Center in Hamtramnk, Michigan.

Mom got a gold one.

My father was born and raised in Hamtramck.

My favorite food? Chili Fries. Followed closely by french fries and gravy.

Oh yes, love the chili cheese fries. But for me the chili has to have beans in it to be complete.

I don't think I've ever gone more than a week without eating beans - black beans, kidney beans, but most important, REFRIED BEANS. Did I happen to mention I'm half Mexican? Yesterday we went to a Mexican restaurant for lunch and I had an enchilada with a side of refried beans, and when my daughter didn't finish all of her bean and cheese burrito, I ate the rest for her. Then that same night my sister took me out to dinner and she was craving fajitas, so I ordered ANOTHER bean and cheese burrito.

And I think tonight Mr. Bauer's Sweetheart is picking up DEL TACO (best fast food ever) on the way home because it's too hot to cook in southern CA this week, and I think I'll have him get me two Red Burritos, which have, you guessed it - beans, cheese and red chile sauce! And thanks to you, Susanarosa, I'll have him get me an order of chili cheddar fries too!

Hmm, favorite foods...

Lobster has to top the list. We had some this Spring in St. Kitts that was just out of this world. I think I went back about 5 times to get it (it was on the "buffet"). I had to stop at 5 because the other people at our table were getting too amused by it and it was a hubby work event...

There is this dish at the Cheesecake Factory that I could just eat every night for the rest of my life. (which means I would have to eat lobster for breakfast or lunch--very doable!) I think it is Chicken Monterey or something like that. It has chicken and asparagus and gravy and the most awesome mashed potatoes. Yum!

I love chocolate and have to admit that I, too, eat raw chocolate chip cookie dough. Can't get enough of it. Brownie batter is very yummy as well. ;)

Since so many of you sang the praises of pierogies, I had to try them. So I made them yesterday for myself and some friends and ummm...maybe I did something wrong. On the box they just showed some veggies on the plate with them, which we didn't do, but we thought they needed like a dipping sauce or something. They were kind of bland and a bit dry (I may have overcooked them just a little..oops) but I wondered what you all eat them with? Suggestions please :)

jampony

jenni... how did you cook them? Growing up, my family always just steamed them, but lately I've been steaming and then sauteing (how the hell do you spell that?) them in butter or margarine to make them a little crisp. Also, what flavor did you get? For plain cheese, I like to use butter and sugar on top, for potato and onion I use a brown and/or mushroom gravy and for broccoli and cheese I use sour cream.

Because of this thread, I had to have them last Friday so I made a bunch (served with Polish sausage, sauerkraut, dumplings and vegetables) and ate them all weekend. And I'm sorry to say this but I don't like Mrs. T's that much (the insides tend to be mushy). I get mine at a local Polish deli; they're really good when they're fresh.

Keep in mind, though, that Polish food is bland, usually. Our big flavor enhancer is blood (duck's blood soup, blood sausage, etc.), which is so gross and not that easy to come by any more, nobody uses it that much. That's why we put ketchup on/in everything -- from scrambled eggs to chicken noodle soup. (By saying "our" and "we" I don't mean to imply all Polish people eat like this; just my family and the Polish people I grew up around.)

Also, check out Mrs. T's website (http://pierogies.com/retail/default.asp) for some recipe ideas. Hope this helps!

jenni- my fave way to cook them is to boil them first, and then sautee them in a pan with butter. Serve with sauteed onions and lots of salt and pepper. :) Don't turn the heat up too high or you will overcook them. Sometimes I like cottage cheese on the side, but that's just me. (Sugar jampony?-EW)

FC- fave ethnic food is Italian. Mexican is a close second.

I saute heaps of sliced onions in olive oil until they are fairly limp and nicely browned. Then I throw in some butter and fry up the pierogies. I always use fresh ones, and they come out really well. They are still mushy, but they have a nice browning and crispiness to them. My favorite kind are potato and cheese. I try to get the local ones "Pierogi Priest" which has a funny little logo. http://www.pierogipriest.com/

As far as what's my favorite ethnic food? It's like asking me which ONE famous guy do I want to crush me. It ain't gonna happen. I love them all so much. How can I choose? As long as it's authentic and fresh, I'll eat it. Hmm. I haven't had Thai in a while....

That's the only way I would eat them when I was a kid. But you're imagining putting sugar on Mrs. T's cheese pierogies (which does sound disgusting) and I'm talking about the kind I get at the deli or at Jewel (Kasia's (http://www.kasiasdeli.com/) -- makes the best potato pancakes, too!). It's called farmer's cheese, it's like a really dry cottage cheese -- it sort of squeaks when you bite into it. With the butter and sugar it's almost like a dessert.

Ohhh jampony, you've officially freaked me out with the blood thing. Is it weird that the first thing I thought of was Angel going to the butcher shop or deli for his dinner? :p
I just boiled them because that's what the package said. And I didn't prepare anything for them, no sauteeing in a skillet with veggies or any of that, so that was probably my mistake. I had the Mrs T's ones, cheese and potato, but now I think I should go to a real deli or somewhere where they know how to make these things! I could tell they should be good, I just figured I screwed up somehow. I'll try again, I think I like the sound of the butter/olive oil saute in a pan method best :) Thanks everyone!
Oh, and favorite ethnic food is most definitely Mexican. I could eat it every day, and I do eat it at least once or twice a week-there's an abundance of great Mexican places in Texas so I'm lucky. Italian is a really close second though.
And LQ-I love that perogie priest, I totally want a t shirt now.

AGREEEED! Which brings me to food issues. I totally have an issue with cottage cheese (if it's baked into something or whatever I'm fine but by itself it gives me the willies). As well as Jello and green fruit loops (but not apple jacks for some reason). I know I'm technically an adult and should be over these by now but seriously, I'm not.

And I too can't pick a favorite type of food.

Don't feel bad...I can't eat anything that I don't have to chew: overly mashed potatoes, jello, pudding...I love the flavor, but I'm a big texture person and food that doesn't require chewing bothers me deeply. I can handle ice cream because it holds its shape temporarily while you eat it, and I can handle meringue pie if every bite has some crust in it. Cottage cheese can only be eaten as an ingredient in food or with Fritos, which cover up the texture issue. Since the baby is due soon (45 days not that I'm counting) I'm also counting down the days until I have to pretend that pureed carrots are totally yummy. Thank God I don't have to eat them.

What about Yogurt?

Only if I mix in granola or Grape Nuts or something...but I'm not big on the flavor of yogurt anyway unless it's Boisenberry (I don't know why) - and I think yogurt is on the list of stuff I'm not supposed to eat while I'm pregnant anyway (something about the live cultures) - no big loss there :)

We had a pretty wonderful dinner the other night at a new restaurant called Urban Flats. It features flatbreads. I had the pizza-ish version. And for dessert - melted chocolate in a fondue pot with poundcake, strawberries, bananas, marshmallows and pineapples to dip in it.

It might not sound that exciting here - but we had a really cute little waiter who explained everything the way the people on Top Chef explain their dishes. He knew all about all the flavors and how the interacted. He made the experience ten times better.

I had an AMAZING dinner last night. French food. Started with carrot and ginger soup and some clams in butter sauce. ;) .

The soup sounds delish. I'm a big soup gal myself. Especially pumpkin or squash or tomato basil - nothin' chunky in my soup!

Also discovered a big affinity for anything barbequed since I've meandered south of the Mason - Dixon. Yum.

Because I had THE best french fries the other day at a bar in NE Minneapolis...

"Truffle Fries" are french fries, fried in truffle oil, with parmesan cheese sprinkled over the top and served with a side of aioli for dipping. Sweet fancy Moses, these things are like crack to me. I became a human vacuum cleaner.

Also, does anyone have Potbelly Subs in their area? I'm currently hooked on the Vegetarian....

Krizzatch, these sound delicious!! i'm curious, where they expensive? We recently dined at a fancy restaurant & a friend ordered the white truffle risotto for an appetizer. He thought the truffles would be mixed in but when the plate arrived, a server promptly showed up alongside the plate, truffle in hand & asked how much he wanted shaved into his dish? The friend thought the truffle was cheese so he told him to 'bring it on!' Well. He enjoyed his plate (remember it was an appetizer) but when we got the bill, he happened to see it first and gasped: $135!! We guessed that the truffle is weighed before it's shaved onto plate, then weighed again, at a cost of probably something like $65/gram. The friend was :o but he said the dish was delicious.

I had truffles in Italy a few years ago and really enjoyed them--I found an olive oil that is flavored with truffles (cheaper than 1 oz. of pure truffle oil they sell for $20) so that is how i enjoy their flavor.

I thought they would be, but they were only a couple of bucks more than the regular "white trash" fries, as I'm now calling them. They could cost $50 and I would pay it.

Photochild, I highly recommend Potbelly. Toasted subs are way better than cold ones in my opinion, and their homemade milkshakes are to die for.

and I was as happy as a clam!
(why are clams happy?????)

I was curious too and found:

The saying is very definitely American, hardly known elsewhere. The fact is, weve lost its second half, which makes everything clear. The full expression is happy as a clam at high tide or happy as a clam at high water. Clam digging has to be done at low tide, when you stand a chance of finding them and extracting them. At high water, clams are comfortably covered in water and so able to feed, comparatively at ease and free of the risk that some hunter will rip them untimely from their sandy berths. I guess thats a good enough definition of happy.

There is also Sonnet to a Clam but it looked boring so I didn't read it.
