What a great episode! I could actually feel the veins in my brain as I tried to keep up with it all!
I don't have confidence that Desmond will make it off the island - I'm worried about him. Poor thing, I don't want him to end up like Heloise.
Wasn't it odd that Daniel Faraday looked older in 1996 than in 2004? And what made Penny go from slam-the-door in your face hating Desmond to spending 3 years trying to find him?
We had pretty much NO time on the island. So what did you think of the freighters? That doc was mighty creepy. The guy who took them to the infirmary seemed almost cool. And is the helicopter pilot really trying to help them?

I think desmond is going to be ok (at least not going to go the way of Heloise becuase he found he constant in Penny. At the end you could see both 1996 desmond and 2007 desmond co-existing and moving time forward. Prior to that only one could move forward at a time and his mind had to move back and forth.
I really enjoyed how the progressed the lost world ahead even without any dealings with the island

So, here's my big question. What happened to 2004 Desmond? Has he integrated with 1996 Des? Does the Des on the freighter with Sayid remember the island and everything that happened on it? Or will his memory stop in 1996?
Also, how friggin' hot was solder Des? yum-mee! This was an excellent episode in my opinion.
And when Daniel first saw Des on the island did he recognize him? I mean he had to, right? Does anyone have that episode so they can check Daniel's reaction to Des?

I think they are integrated now. And I'm thinking Daniel wouldn't have known Des when he first got on the island because the past was still the past until Desmond started time traveling and changed it. When he looked in his journal and saw "If anything goes wrong, Desmond is my constant" - was that always there, or appeared once Desmond changed the past thus altering the future? (Whoa...I just confused myself with that sentence). Anywho, I think it's the same concept as Marty changing things in the past in Back to the Future.
Side note: I saw Harold Perrineau's name in the opening credits last night but he wasn't in the episode. Is his name always there? I mean we know he comes back this season, but I was waiting for him to appear on the freighter as Ben's "man on the boat". I bet he is the one who opened the door for Desmond and Sayid! "You've got a friend on this boat"

I also got a huge kick out of when Desmond and Daniel were about to run Heloise through the maze and Desomond asked why Faraday had the vest on. Faraday explained that it was becuase of the radiation and Desmond points out.... "what about your head?"
It seems the writers have found a sense of humor between
1. You just totally Scooby-Dooed me (Hurley)
2. Awesome, the ship sent us another Sawyer (Hurley)
3. What about your head (Desmond)

I got a bloody nose trying to noodle everything out about last night. The connection between past and present (future?) was nuts. Strange that passing out in the 1996 for over an hour only seemed like 5 minutes to Desmond in 2004. Crazy I tells ya!!

Anyone notice the re-appearance of the numbers again in this episode?
2.342 - 23 and 42
Penny's address - 423
Auction item Widmore was bidding on - 2342
Also, new numbers...
755 maybe refers to the ratio of "going back in time" and the "real time." The 1996 Faraday says that desmond had been "out" for about 75 minutes while Desmond says that he went back for about 5 minutes. Thus the ratio 75:5.
Or maybe it's nothing. LOL

I think Lost is better then suduku from staving off Alzheimers. My pistons were firing faster than ever last night and i didn't even catch that Desmond was moving forward in both years (thanks for pointing that out Paulie).
And angie you are right - Soldier Des was super hot. How odd was it that Mr. Widmore was so willing to help out Des. And why did he leave that water running in the bathroom - did he know it would trigger an episode and send Des back. It seemed like water and light sent him back. Was it lightning on the helicopter that started it?
And who were those other older man being featured during the auction scene. That book being auctioned from the ship that's on the island - was being actioned by someone with the last name Hanso - but it wasn't Alvar - was it?
UGH I need to watch it again!

I think Widmore left the water running in the bathroom to show power in a way, like psssh I don't have to turn off the water, you turn it off for me! As for the trigger in the helicopter, it was when Frank started to go off course. He was supposed to stay at 30, but because of the storm it shifted to 32 and thus the "side effects" Daniel mentioned of straying off course.
The book being auctioned was the diary of Alvar Hanso from the Black Rock, or he was the owner of it, or something. The same Alvar Hanso of Hatch video fame. Why Widmore had such interest in purchasing it, I don't know...maybe because he knew something about where the Black Rock ended up and wanted to send Desmond there (on a "sailing trip around the world") so that he would stay away from Penny? I know, it's a stretch, but hey who cares?
As for the man bidding against him, he didn't seem familiar to me, but I'm betting we needed to pay attention to him. The cameras kind of panned over him in a "look at me, look at me" fashion. Maybe we'll see him later??
Whoa. I spend way to much time analyzing this show.
TinkerbellAPixie

I don't think it was the diary of Alvar Hanso, I think Hanso was the name of the person who put it up for auction. The book was something like the pursur's log that had been recovered from pirates.

Correction on my previous statement...I just found this:
A journal belonging to the first mate aboard the Black Rock, which was lost at sea, is up for auction. And it belonged to Tovard Hanso.

Whoa...I just found this crazy theory on DarkUFO. I like it!!!
Desmond and Elouise aren’t the only ones trapped in a time fart. Daniel himself is skipping around, as foreshadowed by doc Ray’s exclamation that “Faraday can’t even help himself!” Later on we learn that excessive radiation (or electromagnetism, how convenient) lends to the problem, of which zap-happy Daniel has no shortage. Eventually we see that he’s even got an entry in his own log referring to Desmond as his constant, which means that up until he came to the island he was still searching for that one thing or person (wonder where he got that idea from?) to ground him. He found that thing upon meeting Desmond the morning the chopper took off, and was pretty sure that would be the end of his ‘problem’… but upon playing cards with Charlotte that night he still hadn’t made any progress. Perhaps the act of helping Desmond reach his own constant, Penny, will finally ‘unstick’ Danny once and for all.
Also skipping through his lifetime is Mikowski, who’s virtually an expert by the time they find him. I found his “I was just on a Ferris wheel” line interesting, because like everything else in LOST a Ferris wheel goes round and round and always comes full circle. Mikowski threatens the same thing will happen to his crewmates when they “go back to that island”.
And you know who else got a nasty case of the jump-through-life crazies? Rousseau’s entire crew. This could very well be the ‘sickness’ she referred to so early on in season one. Look at how bat-shit nuts Desmond went in the chopper – now imagine Danielle’s entire crew acting like that while she’s trying to “shhh!” them as the smoke monster stalks the jungle and the Others pick off whomever they feel are on Santa’s list. Kinda puts a new spin on that whole scenario.
While we’re at it, let’s think back to Juliet’s arrival by sub. Was it coincidence they knocked her out for the trip through the time barrier? Or by relieving her of her consciousness as she passed through did they save her from any of Daniel’s so called ‘side effects’? As Ethan said, it’s a hell of a ride. Totally Jauntish, if that’s the case, but then again I’m a firm believer you can draw a Stephen King reference to your morning stool if you looked hard enough.
But hey, let’s lock a really misshapen piece of the puzzle into place: Hurley’s friend Leonard. Could it be that he time-skipped his way into the mental institution after being stationed a little too close to the island? Imagine him living pieces of his life over and over again, in loops that get geometrically (Daniel’s wording, not mine) smaller. Now picture those loops getting smaller and smaller… until all that’s left is a tiny 10 or 15-second flash of time he has to relive over and over again: the radio transmission. The numbers. 4,8,15,16,23,42… hiccup!... 4,8,15,16,23,42. Wow, shoot me now.
And finally, let’s consider what a genius intellect with a rational approach would do with the near-infinite knowledge gained by such looping trips through time. Is Ben the ultimate product of the island’s abilities? Instead of being stuck like Dan’s mouse or quantum-leaping around at random, is it possible Ben was taught how to harness, control, and utilize these gifts? If so, are all his well-laid plans merely nothing but him molding and shaping future events the way Desmond did to prevent Charlie’s death a few times?
gasmilicous
02-29-2008, 09:39 AM
Part 2:
Dan’s reference to his mouse being ‘stuck’ this episode was extremely important. Desmond and Mikowski might’ve been stuck too (well, maybe not anymore), but the one person who’s really, really stuck is Jacob. His creepy “help me…” was an otherworldly call from beyond (Time? Space? Does it matter?) with his cabin representing the epicenter of some sort of temporal disaster that stranded him where he is now. Remember his magically re-constructing lantern? “Time is broken here” – Lara Croft.
Tearing a single page out of Dan’s book we now see mention of three events: A, B, and C. I’m willing to bet that two of those events pertain to both times Desmond failed to push the button; once at the crash of 815, and once when he turned the failsafe key. The third event we don’t know about or it hasn’t happened yet (the end event?)
I believe each event triggered an alternate timeline, and is responsible for the ‘rebirth’ of everyone involved (physical and spiritual healing included). This is hinted at multiple times throughout the show with “See you in another life”. But now, when we begin to factor the time hiccups into the equation, we’re not only looking at concurrent timelines. We must now also consider timelines where someone’s consciousness (and only their consciousness – that part’s important) is derived from their past or even their future. From the beginning, the producers have hinted that where flight 815 crashed wasn’t nearly as important as when it crashed.
Taking this into consideration, what if the plane crashed before September 22nd 2004? We’ve seen time differentials of 31 seconds and even a whole day now – who’s to say it couldn’t span a week or more? As we saw with Desmond, the consciousness is transferred but the body stays the same. So what if (and get ready to be totally creeped out here…) what if the plane crashed during a period in time when Christian Shephard was still alive?
What if the only place his consciousness had to go was into his current body, tucked neatly away in the coffin that turned up empty on impact? Could this explain why Jack kept seeing him? Could this explain why Jacob looked like him for that brief instant, yet still looks like an embalmed corpse?
Yikes.

I had to stop reading the DarkUFO theory before my head exploded.
Daniel's skipping around would sort of explain why he was crying when he saw the wreckage of flight 815 - he had just come from a sad somewhere else but doesn't remember it.
I think the reason why Penny's dad didn't turn off the water was simple germophobia. I noticed that he turned the water ON with a towel - I have a friend who does that and she'll leave the water running while she dries her hands and then uses the towel to turn the water off. Maybe he was just being a lazy rich germophobe who didn't want to be bothered turning it off. However, that doesn't explain why the sink overflowed. If the drain was open, the water should have just gone down the drain.
Army Desmond is definitely hot. But so is Island Desmond. Mmmmmm..... Desmond....

When the communications guy was saying that they had went to have a look at the island, made me remember something that i thought during episode 2.
Remember the eye that Hurley saw in Jacob's cabin? could that have been Miles? was he already on the island before the rest of the "recuers" arrived?

Okay, I was finally able to finish reading this theory and I find this portion extremely interesting. Flashforward bearded Jack told the new surgeon something about himself being less drunk than his father upstairs... At first I thought it was a trick to make us think it was a flashback, but now I see that this theory has a lot of merit.
So, if the plane flew through an electromagnetic storm before it crashed and went back in time and Christian Shephard found himself alive in a coffin... wait a minute - so where has he been this whole time? In Jacob's cabin? Who/what is his constant?

I actually didn't enjoy this episode very much and I don't know why. Although at the end, when Penny and Desmond were talking on the phone on Christmas Eve, I almost lost it. That was very touching.
I love Desmond but his WTF/OMG face has got to go. That is not a good look for him!
I am interested in the whole concept of being "unstuck" in time. That exact phrase is used in Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, where the protagonist, Billy Pilgrim, travels back and forth between different time periods of his life, and even to another planet.
When Desmond first got to Oxford and was walking through the outdoor breezeway with the columns, it reminded me of Hogwarts. And then who should we see talking to Daniel but what looked like an overgrown Harry Potter. That tickled me, although I am probably the only person in the universe that thought that.
I miss Ben.

So I wonder what happens when 1996 Desmond lives for 8 years and catches up to 2004 Desmond. People are wondering why Daniel doesn’t remember Desmond. Why doesn’t Desmond remember Desmond? I don’t really expect an answer to this by the way.
Someone mentioned earlier that Rousseau’s ship mates had the time sickness and that’s the reason they died. That’s a cool theory. But I don’t think they even existed. Rousseau is Ben’s friend Anny. Every one was wondering what happened to her during the purge. She was Ben’s lover and was pregnant with Alex. Ben probably tried to turn her to the dark side but she refused and Ben let her escape the purge. This whole French thing is just one big cover story. She and Ben are the last of the DARMA initiative.

Also the rat from the past had a brain aneurism. Faraday never taught the rat the maze. So how did future rat learn the maze if it dies before it learns how to run it? 2004 Desmond is having bloody noses not 1996 Desmond. Maybe because he didn’t actually teach the rat the maze is the reason it had the aneurism.

Roger Linus starts working as a janitor, or a "work man" for the DHARMA Initiative, while Ben goes to school and befriends Annie, a girl his age. Immediately after their arrival on the island Ben sees his mother from his room's window, but she quickly disappears. Roger starts drinking and verbally abusing Ben on a daily basis, blaming him for his wife's death. On the day of Ben's birthday, Annie shows Ben two woodcarving dolls she made of each other. Annie gives him the woodcarving doll of herself and keeps the one of Ben, telling him that this way they will always be together. Ben keeps his doll all the way to adulthood.

The Misfit kid has a really bad rep on Lost forums. He steals people's images that they catch onsite and claims them as his own.
He posts 'foilers', they are not spoilers, they are his theories based on spoiler info. He also photoshops images to make his 'spoilers' look real.
He lies, and he hacked into the Lost forum I got to, and got in major trouble with the law for it.
Any info on his site is not to be trusted, and verified as true before believing him.
