HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: GET IN THE PICTURE
Hello! Welcome to High School Musical: Get in the Picture, the reality show that tries to find the best talent to appear in the third installment of the soon to be cult classic, High School Musical! Having only seen HSM 1 (I couldn’t get through the second one), I hope I’m qualified enough to judge the teeny-bopper worthiness of these kids, but I’ll give it a shot!
First we are introduced to the finalists, a group of high school kids who were chosen from the thousands who tried out. We learn that they will be “living” the HSM experience with a faculty of teachers. Every week there’s an evaluation to see who moves on and who is sent to the (gasp!) chorus!! I love how they don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings so they give them a consolation prize. You aren’t good enough for a probably small role in the movie, but hey you get to be an extra! The winner gets a talent deal, a single released and get to star in a music video during the end credits (omg) of HSM3. Wait they don’t even get to really be in it? Laaame.
The first faculty member we are introduced to is Rob the acting coach. He says the kids have to play a game of first impressions. Basically they have to each get up in front of everyone and listen while they get judged by the way they look. (I’m actually not sure if these kids have met each other yet, so I’m just going to go with the looks thing). First is nerdy looking James, who gets called intelligent (aka nerd), Harry Potter (loser), and calm (boring). The kids were definitely told to not say what they really think and say something nice, like “interesting”. Brianna is next and gets some creepy comments from the dudes and some bitchy comments from the girls. Stan is next, who is apparently a jock and really popular (i.e. asshole). Stan used to be a football player until he started singing (or discovered he might like the men instead?). Kristy gets up and some kid calls her a dumb blonde, and she looks pisssed. Yeah, woah, that was mean. She says it’s not true, but she does sound a little dumb, so I’m not so sure. Isaiah is next and we get some possible stereotyping, and basically the girls call him out for being a player. Somehow I don’t see it. Ether (whose name sounds like a chemical) gets called nerdy and awkward by most of the group, which is kind of mean, but Ether actually agrees with them. All the guys start hitting on the next two girls, Christina and Tierney and there’s not much else to say about them. TJ is up and the possible dumb blond says she all she sees when she looks at him is basketball. Really? Shayna says stereotypes are unavoidable (if you say them out loud). Bailey is next and the guys think she is really confident and popular, but Bailey reveals that in reality, she has no friends. Interesting. The girls all basically call her a bitch, which I guess is closer to the truth than the boys, since Bailey says she has no close friends and that’s made her the person she is today (a bitch?). Next is the token funny fat guy, Anthony. The girls all fall over themselves calling him a teddy bear. I see roles forming in this group already. Shayna is called outgoing and a hippie/nature girl (because she’s wearing a scarf?). She is also called “uniquely hot” by Stan, which is a little creepy, but I think she’s into it.
When it’s over, Nick Lachey comes out with K-mart gift bags filled with HSM stuff, and sweet electronics. Nick says there’s another surprise coming and the kids freak out and omg they get to go to the actual HSM set! Some of these kids probably tried out just for a chance to meet Zac Efron (good enough reason I suppose).
So they get to the famous East High School and they start freaking out again, and wanting to dance on the tables. Nick says they just stepped into what they have been watching for years (wow these kids are cool). I feel a little uncomfortable with the fact that these 16 and 17-year-old kids are so obsessed with the show. Bailey actually gets down and touches the floor. I thought this movie was for like 12 year olds?
Out comes the director/choreographer extraordinaire, Kenny Ortega. He starts talking to them about the journey and adventure they are on and gives them some advice, including “see old movies” (like from pre-2000, real classic stuff to these kids). Right, I can see how that would help, maybe put things in perspective and show there are better movies out there?
Then some of the actors from HSM come out (obvi not Zac or Vanessa, they are just too big of stars). We have to hear about how each of them got started and you have to work hard and have faith, blah blah. I think a lot of is just luck too actually. I mean it turns out the girl who played Kasey got a part written especially for her by Kenny.
So the group starts jamming in the cafeteria on Kenny’s request, and Nick’s voice-over reveals that the kids don’t know that Kenny will be judging the finale and choosing who will be in the coveted end credits video. I mean its not like he’s the director or anything, why would he help choose the winner?
They start singing and Bailey gets the first solo, she’s not bad, but it seems a little like she’s trying too hard. Briana is really nervous and forgets the lyrics. Jock Stan starts really getting into it, He’s also not bad, but has a higher voice than I prefer. Teddy Bear has a deep voice, obviously and Tierney (I think that’s her name) is actually kind of awesome. Actually they are all not bad, especially the nerdy dude, Ether, who has a great voice, as does Harry Potter. TJ kinda made his solo into a gospel song and I didn’t hate it cool. Kenny’s then like, hey I gotta do this movie thing, you guys wanna be in it? The crew is going to be part of the Wildcats fan club, and again, they start freaking out. Like isn’t that what the winner gets? So basically they’ve all already won, as we have to hear each one of them gush about. A fashion show of the fictional high school clothing ensues followed by makeup. The woman that’s doing their makeup probably did Zac Efron’s makeup! Tierney gushes. I bet she never washed her brushes out in between either!
Their line is to shout “three more” which they immediately start practicing and jumping around. Great job!
After the scene the kids meet with the next faculty member, dance instructor Regina.
She starts teaching them some choreography, and it seems pretty simple (unlike my failed attempt at hip-hop classes recently, but that’s another story). One of the girls calls her style old-school and ancient (burn, but also, how?). They do some dance with pushups and Anthony complains he is having a hard time. It’s like a workout/dance routine. Then they do one with basketballs that looks fun After the class Reggie gives the kids a motivational speech that has lots of sports metaphors that I think confuse some of the kids.
So! That concludes day one of “competition”. Nick gathers the crew and tells them to relax and get to know each other tonight, cause tomorrow, someone will be “aout”, oh wrong show. I also think I’ve been watching too much VH1 because I keep expecting some bitch fights and drunken hookups, but then I remember the kids are like 16 and their idea of relaxing is sitting by the piano singing Elton John. Wow, the drama! More importantly, how do they all know the words to Tiny Dancer? I would expect them to bust out some Miley or Jonas Brothers songs. I guess they are trying to show how cultured and well-rounded they are. Well hopefully next week someone will get kicked off and we’ll see some real drama!! Till next time…
