Hey, it was my search for recaps about this show that brought me here in the first place, so does anyone want to get in on this thread with me? This show is definitely a top five favorite of mine. I think Tommy Gavin, the character played by Dennis Leary, is one of the most fucked up, hilarious and best portrayed characters in TV right now. Hell, the cast is great and the characters they play are ALL CRAZY. Who's with me!?! Lets... goooooo!!!!

I'm with ya! I've been waiting for someone to start this thread since I am too lazy to do it myself.I'm really hoping Leary gets the Emmy.

No doubt Tommy Gavin and his family put the FUN in dysfunctional! Let's not forget the crazy women in his life: Janet, Crazy Tati, and Sheila.

So do you think Tommy will give up everything (uh, nothing) and take Sheila up on her offer of a picket fence and their own family staked by her 3 million dollars as a 9/11 widow?

Welcome to the party msCCRN! There's lots to talk about but I've gotta get some sleep. When is Susan Sarandon's character coming back? I hope probie decides not to leave the house...

Okay, decided to watch the show instead of go right to sleep. Good choice! That was probably one of the funnier episodes they've had in a while. Right out of the gate - fighting a fire which all got the men high had me rolling. Sean taking cluelessness to the next level and beyond. Franco's new girlfriend and her brother. That scene of them playing checkers was hilarious. Interesting scene with Tommy and his brother. Damn, Leary does an amazing job of portraying pent-in rage. God, Tommy's bro is such a sucker. My guess is the kid will turn out to be Tommy's.

I loved that they were all giggles and talking about food. OMG that scene with Franco, the girlfriend, and her brother walking down the street! She picks that moment to let Franco know that her brother has a little Tourette's Syndrome!

Yeah about Tommy's brother...what a gullible S.O.B. I'm still waiting for Janet to go for a gyno/ob visit and find out she has chlymadia (sp?) along with her baby. I wonder if the father of the baby will be the season cliff-hanger?

Sheila is about ready to go into complete stalker mode. Can't wait until she finds out that Tommy is diddling anything with a vagina. She will go all Glenn Close on his ass. Of course I guess it can't get much worse than putting roofies and Viagra in your non-alcholic beverage so you can have sex with a passed out firefighter and then make him think he's blacked out and fallen off the wagon.

Hee, I love this show!

Let's be honest - FX is fast becoming, if not already my favorite network for highly creative and intense shows. The Shield, Rescue Me and Nip/Tuck... does it get any more diesel than that!?!

Since this week was mostly so light-hearted I'm thinking next week is going to bring some heavy drama.

I was suprised to see how well the guys took the whole Probie/gay thing. I was expecting a lot worse, at least some one to freak out or something. I kind of felt like it was a big build up for nothing. Janet's baby has to be Tommy's but I think that's a story for next season. And they really didn't have to go there with the Uncle Teddy sex scene but it was funny all the same.

Sure they did! Where else can you get a classy line such as "RIDE THE BALONEY PONY!!!"?

Franco seemd to be the most threatend by the idea of Probie checking out his hang-down in the shower.

I am going to have to catch this latest episode again. What the hell was that scene with Janet and Tommy all about?

Tommy slams Janet against the wall, Janet has a vice-grip on Tommy's sack. I was thinking we would have seen another hate-fuck thing if Tommy's brother had not come home and started kicking the shit out of Tommy. The looks on their faces just had me all confused.
ScotyUtah, any thoughts?

Oh BTW, I could definitely do without the sex scenes of Uncle Teddy. Ewww!

I don't see Tommy and Janet doing the hate-fucks anymore. She was definitely laying into Tommy heavy with the guilt trip. This was a fantastic episode. The best part was Tommy asking the bartender for an eight finger shot of the most expensive scotch and not having the clams to pay for it. Then we get a classic Leary tirade which perfectly summarizes the brutal life that is Tommy's. That was unreal. Awesome LOL moments with the probie getting called a retard by the tourettes bro of Franco's gf. How freaky was the scene with Tommy in the hospital room with Stack? Dude's eyes snapped open and focused on Tommy and you could see the lines of communication trying to connect. So sad at the end when Stack passed away. I simply cannot get enough of this show.

I am a little clearer on things after reading the recap. I agree, there is so much bitterness between Tommy and Janet that they are probably done doing the horizontal bop for any reason.

The scene with Tommy telling Stack to let go was pretty powerful. But it seemed really weird to me that he was just sitting there nonchalantly drinking a beverage while his good friend went into cardiopulmonary arrest.

So, do you think that Capt Jerry and Miss Malibu Rum will reggae on into the sunset together? I'm thinking that she needs a green card, and he's a lonely old guy, so why not?

There is something about the Franco/Natalie thing that bugs me, so I'm kinda glad it's over. But her brother was hysterical when he said to Sean, "and they call me a retard."

I think Tommy's reaction was more about being relieved and knowing he got through to Stack.

I totally didn't think of that angle with the Capt and Miss Malibu Rum (nice nickname!). With this show, I can definitely see that happening.

The thing that bugged me most about the Franco/Natalie relationship is that you were forced to suspend thoughts about what happened to his daughter and why he was acting so non-commital about that whole situation.

That's possible but I think there was a line of communication being attempted that only another fire fighter could understand. I think Stack didn't want to put his wife though such a traumatic situation...

Yeah, I watched it again last Friday. It still seemed like maybe Tommy was just seeing things. But I like to think that Stack was trying to communicate with Tommy though, so I think I'll stick with that interpretation.

I really, really like this show. Sometimes the things it brings up are so horrible or so heartbreaking I can barely stand to watch, but then sometimes it's so hilariously funny I laugh until I choke. And a lot of times, both things are in the same scene! Tolan & Leary have done a great job with this show. Does anyone know if they're involved with casting too?

I'm almost certain that Leary is responsible for the casting. He's pulled a lot of the old characters from "The Job" over to this show. I know he's done a lot of consulting with fire fighters and has really done an amazing job keeping the show true to life, not just with the fire fighting action, but with all the ball busting and relationships as well. FX is knocking it out of the park with Rescue Me and the Shield.

 Don't stop the recapping of this show! The topics can be quite serious. I think it's hard to recap and umnata does a good job. Hard to recap and hard to comment on. The writing is great on this show. Some of the stuff seems so over the top and then some reality pokes through and it all seems plausible.

As I commented in an earlier recap of the show: Complex emotions, humor, drama and lots of sex! What more could a girl want? Or a boy for that matter!

I can't wait for the recap of tonight's show! Don't want to give anything away for the west coasters, so I'll shut up.

Well, I'm glad to see that most of you are enjoying the recaps - AND recognizing that it's a really hard show to recap. Not just because it's so serious some times, but because it's so well done. And don't worry, the recaps keep coming as long as the person writing them, wants to keep going. To be honest your comments help motivate - but i realize that it's a hard show to comment on. Funny, because it's such a great show to discuss. This is my first day on the forums (i'm now obsessed) and you'll be seeing more of me here!

I hope you all read my note on the main site about my "BiBo" not working. I'm going to catch the ep in it's entirety tonight and recap it over the weekend - but from what I saw - it was a greatttt episode. No spoilers until after the recap, but I had an alternate theory about the ending that was more closely going to relate to the the Franco-Natalie-Charlie triangle. Those of you who've seen the ep, should know what I'm talking about.

And from what I've seen, they REALLLLLLY need to drop this whole probie gay/straight/bi thing. I think it's a matter of not wanting to admit defeat, but the writers just need to leave it alone. It makes no sense. Also, I love the stuff that happened with CrazyTaty and Sean. The Capt. Jerry scenes, were disturbing and SUPER surprising. I was with most of the comments thinking that the whole illegal immigrant thing was just a way to get her green card, but that wouldn't make sense because he's still techincially married to Jeannie. It was a great twist. Okay, that's enough for now, I need somehitng to be able to recap!

Welcome to the thread Umnata! I was wondering when you'd join us. Thanks for recapping the show!! The past episode was definitely a great one and the last 3 minutes left us in a serious cliff hanger. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

The best episodes are the ones that have a balance of comedy and drama. Once in a while they throw one out that that is so over that top the hilarious quotes stay in your head for days. Other times it's so serious you're left wondering how they could even have humor in their lives. The tirade Tommy went on in the bar a couple weeks ago was classic Leary but showed how utterly horrible his life had been over the past year while still making you smile.

As for what you'll be recapping after this show, why not stick with the FX originals and do Nip/Tuck. That show is straight up looney tunes.

Thanks for the kind words!

Really, I could be totally wrong, but I think that it's totally capt. jerry who is going to die. maybe it's just wishful thinking because i hate capt. jerry, but it seems to me (as I wrote in the recap) that cj's death would open up a lot of doors. Franco takes the Lt.'s test. Lou becomes Kenny again, except this time Capt. Kenny. Tommy gets to stay at the firhouse, and maybe even they'll get a new probie and Probie Mikey can get a little respect. Maybe I just like this plan so much that I'm makiung it sound more likely than it actually is.

I hope Johnny's shooting is more of a wake up call to reconcile Tommy & Johnny, etc. I realize those were some pretty serious wounds, and that this isnt exactly the kind of show that often speaks to gimmicky reconciliation-type situations, so it's all just wishful thinking.

I just think he's kind of lame. That's the whole explaination sadly. im just not interested in him banging big illegal immigrant nurses or tending to his wife. and as much as i loathe johnny, i dont know that I'm ready to see that character go yet.

Okay...coming here to post as a Boston girl, about a local guy (Dennis Leary). I cannot STAND Dennis Leary. He's a one-trick pony, IMO, and not even a very funny or talented one-trick pony. His one trick is to be abrasive and foul, to try and be loud and clever and funny...and the only thing he succeeds at is being abrasive and foul and loud. Clever? No. Funny? No.

I remember seeing him years ago on the comedy club circuit before he made it big nationally, and I couldn't stand him then. Now, everywhere I turn there he is! On Trump's show, on NESN co-announcing a Red Sox game with other local comedian Lenny Clark, and now on his own show Rescue Me (Which, hello? That's not acting when you're just playing yourself, Dennis.)

Sorry...I'm guessing that this thread is full of love for the show, but I'm raining on your parade for just a minute here, and then I'll disappear from the thread and allow all of you to go back to the lovin' on the show and Mr Leary

No worries. We can all have different opinions about the same person. I disagree with your scathing opinion and think Leary's brand of comedy is what a lot of people want to hear. It's like he's calling bullshit on everything and I for one, like it when people, issues, whatever, get called out. He's a cynic, that much is certain. Sugar coated he's not.

Yay for Umnata and Rescue Me! The comments are rolling in on the blog, and I for one, am loving it. :)

The differing opinions on who will be pushing up daisies is worth reading alone. I think the Capt. Jerry story line is the most limited (wife w/Alzheimers, banging illegal nurse's aide etc.) and that's why I think he's a goner.

On the other hand, if Johnny dies, this opens up all sorts of possibilities as far as a Tommy-Janet-Sheila triad of misery and the raising of another Gavin offspring (with or without Chlymadia--I just can't let that go).

I hope they wrap up the Franco-Keela-Susan Sarandon thing just because it bugs me. Maybe Franco and Natalie will get together. Franco will adopt Richard the 'tard and then Keela will have a big brother and they'll all be one big happy family.

I watched the first 4 minutes on the FX website, and all it did was make me more anxious for Tuesday's episode.

I cant' wait to see tomorrow's episode. Why does everyone think one of the characters has to die? Isn't it possible that they both live?

I would be really sad to see the Chief bite it. Even though his character isn't the most endearing/interesting, I thought he gave some really great performances last season. That scene when he was talking to Franco about sending his wife away.....oh man, that was so heartbreaking! I thought he played that just exactly right. Such a wonderful actor!

I don't want to see Johnny die either. I think there are more story possiblilities if he lives than if he dies. So my vote is, they both live!!

the recap is coming up tomorrow (the show takes multiple viewings). but as I'm writing it, I need to ask - did we know about this deaf/mute sister before this episode? Like i said i was new to the show this year, and they way they presented her it was kind of like they needed to explain her to people, like sean (and me). The episode as a whole i had some problems with but we'll get into it in the recap. great opening tho. does anyone know the song they played through the beginning scenes.

The recap is up so I guess it is safe to commence conversation about this latest episode. The best part of the episode IMO was the first few minutes. The shock, the emotion, and the heartbreak were conveyed so well without any dialogue.

We go from the sublime to the ridiculous. Major eye rolling at the Gavity wedding at the cemetery. Major gagging at Uncle Teddy and his cum dumpster wife crying for a nephew-in-law that she never met, while he shows no emotion at all. What is that all about?

Then I waffled between, "Maybe Tommy really isn't such a shithead" or maybe, "Tommy is a total shithead" when I listened to the phone message for Johnny. I don't know if that message was legit or not, but why would he want to win Janet over if he is going to take off with Sheila? Is this going to be some sort of ultimate revenge when Janet says she wants him back, and he tell her to f*ck off?

(More whining) What is with the introduction of this sister Rosemary in the second to the last episode of the season, huh?

How fast do you think Capt. Jerry will call INS on Miss Malibu Rum?

Let's discuss, please

Umnata
08-25-2006, 02:27 PM
Ugh I agree with everything you're saying and more!!! This show has been some of the best television of not just the summer, the year. And this episode which is something you would think Leary and Tolan would handle with grace and skill, was totally uneven.

The first part was by far the best of the whole show. I loved sheila and crazytaty's reactions the best (especially crazytaty - hey i give credit where credit is due!). I was even somehow able to sympahize with janet. her falling to the floor was symbolic of kind of her whole life. If she's feeling a little self-pity along with grief i think she's earned it.

The probie stuff, while ridiculous from the start, has reached epic moronic levels. All of a sudden he is full-on bi, ready to get guys numbers? when did that happen? Isn't it yet ANOTHER about face for him and his sexuality. Last week he was getting the gay banged right out of him by Paula and this week he's bi? i dont get it.

I can say no more about Uncle Teddy. I think that whole scene was just a miscalculaton on the part of the writers. they were going for humor and it just didnt play.

Rosemary is so out of left field i odnt know what to do with myself. I mean they are obviously going for the Kennedy comparison, but at the funeral? so bizarre. She wouldnt want to miss her brothers funeral, but angie did? Not only that, they are so happy to see her, fine, but not at all upset about the circumstances under which they are seeing her? isnt it kind of poor form to be telling everyone how great you are at a funeral? i guess not as poor as getting hitched literally on ur brothers grave.

the only pleasant surprise was the reintroduction of the keela storyline. im interested to see where it goes, although i hope it doesnt break up natalie and franco. havent we seen enough of franco the man whore?

i wonder what kind of vengence capt. jerry wil have on miss malibu rum? will it be INS level or something more sinister? do you think that his heart attack will lead to some new leadership in the house?

next week looks amazing, and i can already promise that the first two words to it's recap will be: poor sheila.

next week looks amazing, and i can already promise that the first two words to it's recap will be: poor sheila.

For sure, "poor Sheila" is a loser no matter if Tommy takes off with her, or dumps her.

I agree, I am bored with the Probie story line and I really hope his transfer comes through so we can move on.

I think the Franco/Natalie thing is taking a bit of a weird incestuous turn. I was liking the let's befriend the 'tard 'cuz he's smarter than he looks thing. Is Susan Sarandon signed for any more episodes so we can have a believable plot line here?

Yeah, since when does the ex-wife not show up at the funeral? Where the hell was Angie?
Damn, all I have to contribute:detective: are more questions.

The more I think about the message on Johnny's phone from Tommy, the more I feel like Tommy has done something ultimately sketchy. When he's listening to the messages in his apartment with Lou, it seems clear that this is the first time he's hearing the message. This means he made the call to Johnny AFTER he died. That is the ultimate in douchbaggery. He's certainly screwed in the head but what does he gain from doing this. I'm thinking she'll listen to the message again and do a time stamp check or something to that effect and that will effectively end any hopes of reconciliation.

It seems low enough that he would do something like that, let alone attempt to come clean about it. He should care less about Lou banging a nun because he's going straight to hell with antics like that.

I watched the re-run last night. I thought the first time I saw it that Tommy sent that message after he heard Johnny's message, and last night just confirmed it to me. I'll be shocked if it turns out to be legit.

I thought the opening scene was absolutely perfect. Well, except for leaving out Johnny's ex-wife. All the actors did such a wonderful job. I would have loved to see what Marisa would have done with that scene.

And maybe I'm in the minority, but I loved it when Maggie and Sean got married in the cemetary! When everybody had to move because they were standing on someone's mother's grave...HA ha ha!! That really made me laugh.

Can't wait to see the finale!

Well, I'm annoyed that Leary did not win the EMMY. I was dying to hear his acceptance speech and count how many times the censors would bleep him out.
Oh well, we can look forward to seeing how Leary and company will wrap up the season tonight.

One word from the last episode:

cunf

Still the best show on tv. Had to love it when reality came crashing down on Franco about dating a lesbian. I also discovered that there really is a band called Apache Stone. After the firehouse kitchen fight between Tommy, Janice and Sheila maybe now we can see Tommy go bachelor styles again.

Scoty! Someone else here watches Rescue Me! This season has been a little up and down for me, but it's still one of the best on TV, easily. Tommy is so effing hot.
