View Full Version : What show(s) do you miss?
I'm at work. None of my sources are calling me back. I'm bored. So, that being the case, I thought I would add a new thread to the mix. I think it's pretty self-explanatory: What show or shows do you miss? They can be old favorites or shows that just recently got sh!t-canned. They can be popular favorites or obscure programs that only you and that weirdo from the AV Club remember.
Here, I'll go first. I miss Bands on the Run, The X-Files and...wait for it...Friends. Yep, that's right, I said Friends. Bring the hate.

I cannot hate on Friends! I still cry every time I see that damn prom video/"he's her lobster" one.
X Files too (but not late seasons, I miss Mulder)
Freaks and Geeks
Arrested Development
Paradise Hotel or Temptation Island-I miss them both and I'd be happy to have either one back!!
Angel-I think it had finally hit its stride and gotten really good, then bam. gone.

I was a huge Friends fan, but the latter seasons weren't as good as the first few.
I wish we could get new episodes of Seinfeld, Arrested Development, Fresh Prince. I miss my animated shows...like Spider-Man, X-men, Superman, and Batman

Are you a fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm?
derder
05-12-2006, 03:02 PM
The first three seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm were as smart as Seinfeld, I thought. But the last couple were pretty lame, I could barely watch.
Best Episode: Crazy Eyes Killa
LQ & jennilicious - I agree about the X-Files. Once Mulder left, that show was dead to me.
Firecat - I agree. Friends took a turn for the worse around season 7 or 8. After Monica and Chandler got hitched and it was revealed that Rachel was knocked up - whenever that was.
Good call everyone who mentioned Arrested Development. I totally spaced and forgot to mention that. Although, did anyone else think this last season was not as good as the first two?
Does no one remember Bands on the Run?

I agree about the first few seasons of curbs being better than the last, same goes for Arrested.
I can't isolate my favorite Seinfeld episodes, they were all classics. Have you seen the Puerto Rican day parade episode? I think it was pulled from airing again, but it's circulating the net.

I didn't add Seinfeld to my list, because I don't miss it (god bless you, tnt!!) and I still get to see it almost every day. I don't think I could pick a favorite, there are so many that I love-the Chinese restaurant, Festivus, and Mulva come to mind.
Mulv, I do remember Bands on the Run, I think. Vh1 competition type show, right? I never really got that into it, but a Texas band (Flickerstick) either won it all or came in second. I only remember because they got some press around here.

I miss Futurama, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Star Trek: TNG and Voyager, Friends, and Wintuition among others. I can understand ending the shows that actually had finales (not many fights are interesting with all the Potentials becoming Slayers, Angel was looking older and older when he was "supposed" to look the same age (although they could've made some excuse for that) and the question about Buffy would always be looming, the Treks had their standard 7 seasons, and Friends could only go so long before the people that liked the show would tire of it). I can't really blame GSN for dropping Wintuition (the gameplay wasn't too entertaining, but I liked the concept and there was a little eye candy for me :-P), but I blame Fox's horrid scheduling of Futurama for its undue end.

My fave Seinfeld episode is the one with the hansom cab and the marble rye and Elaine and the sax player. I don't know the title, I just know the funny.

Oh thank you jennilicious!! I'm glad someone else remembers it besides me, even if you weren't a fan.
I think I posted my feelings about this show in another thread somewhere on the board but I'll repeat myself. This show was awesome. It had everything: humor, pathos, music, relationships, love, friendship, competition. For my money, it's the best reality show I've ever seen. It was just so goddamned entertaing. Alas, it's not even available on DVD. It's really gone. Into the VH1 vault, maybe forever.
And yes, Flickerstick was the band that won and they are from Dallas/Ft. Worth. I actually thought they were a pretty good band too. Kinda U2ish but with some more indie influences. Actually, they still are a band. Their music is available on iTunes if anyone is curious. And no, I'm not a paid member of their publicity team.
Actually, that reminds me. Someone needs to start a what music do youlike thread. If no one else does it, I will, I guess.
Good call everyone who mentioned Freaks and Geeks. That show was gone well before it's time.

Mulv, both my sisters live in Austin, actually Pflugerville right outside of Austin, and they love the area. My youngest sister went to UT, Austin and highly recommends it. I grew up in TX and love all things Texan, so I try to get down that way as often as possible. The area has a lot to offer. It's definitely a place I want to move back to some day. It's hot as hell in the summer, though, so be prepared.

Mulv, jumping on the Austin love train to say it is a great, livable little city. I love living here. And UT has top-notch graduate programs. The summer heat (and humidity) is brutal, but not a good enough reason to stay away!

Mulv- obviously you should listen to all the Austin residents here! I don't live in that part of Texas, but I've heard it's great as well. I lived in SC for 10 years before I moved here, and I definitely like it better here in TX. The heat in the summer IS incredible though (high utility bills for the AC), and I'll always pine for the snow and cold of good old Pittsburgh PA! I pretty much wear shorts to work year round (even when it's below 40 degress in the morning), and all my coworkers make fun of me- but compared to PA- 40 degrees is balmy!
Thanks Texas contingent! There's more of you than I thought. I'm definitely considering UT Austin. It's either that or NYC for grad school. Well, I suppose, not going to grad school at all is another option, too. I'm just a little hesitant because I'm not much of a city person, but I hear Austin is very beautiful and has a great park system and lots of outdoor life.
Brutal Youth - If you don't mind me asking, what program are you in at UT? I'm considering the screenwriting program, in their Radio, Film and TV school, which I hear is AWESOME. Any thoughts?
Ok, back to TV talk after this. I don't mean to make you all my guidance counselors!
Anyone going to miss any of this year's departing shows? West Wing? Malcolm in the Middle? That 70s Show? Will & Grace? Joey? (Kidding! Just making sure you're paying attention.)
I used to like That 70s Show and Will & Grace until the writing starting sucking a few years back. I think I saw a preview that has Jackie ending up with Fez. WTF?

MST3000 -- I haven't thought of that one in several years -- I can hear the theme music in my head even as I type this. Loved that show.
(Have you ever seen the "Whose Line is it Anyway" version of that? It's kinda funny -- just not long enough.
Let me think, Earth 2. Was that the one where people relocated from Earth to another planet (hence Earth 2), and these mud-covered things came up from the ground and occasionally captured people?

OMG I was like obsessed with Wings. Looking back, I'm not sure why. It probably was not that funny. Tony Shalhoub was on it too. And Thomas Hayden Church will always be Lowell to me too!
I loved Roswell too, at least for the first season. It was an amazing teenage drama. They really messed it up by making it too sci-fi. I like sci-fi but it wasn't very good sci-fi. I'll always love Colin Hanks for being on it! And for the entire first season of Lost, I called Claire "Tess".

MST3K is probably my all-time favorite TV show. My brother and I still quote it all the time. Our parents started showing it to us when I was 8 and he was 6...they really warped our minds. ;) I'm not familiar with the "Whose line is it anyway" version of it!
Yes, that's exactly Earth 2! It was like Lost, but on another planet. The Noxema girl and Antonio Sabato, Jr were on it. Fine stars of the mid-90s! I think it was recently released on DVD.
Yeah, like no one watched Space: Above and Beyond, which is really sad because it was really good. It was similar to the new Battlestar Galactica except it focused on the pilots. Bill Buchanen from 24 was on it! I wonder if it's out on DVD?

Felicity and Buffy were great, but they both ran their course. Still, I didn't ever miss those shows. They were great!
I also miss 3-2-1 Contact and Electric Company. Now that I have kids, I wish they could some of the shows I loved, and not just Sesame Street.
I thought Cannonball 2000 was great bit of reality programming. But it was just a one-off as far as I know. I think they should do another edition.
And--I'm so embarrased to admit this--where is The Swan? Man that show was so bad it was good.

Lots of great shows you guys miss! I am surprised and shocked that no one misses Twin Peaks! I do!
I also miss Buffy, Angel especially because the story was left unfinished, X-files with Mulder only, and John Doe because it was just starting to get really good when it got axed.

The IMDB is a huge database of information about movies, tv shows, actors, writers, directors, composers...anything you'd want to know about and more. You'll love it, check it out:
http://www.imdb.com
Haha, good plan about Earth 2. If things go bad, I'll just MST3K it! I only vaguely remember the monster...was it harmless? I remember that Tim Curry was badass. He was probably scarier than the monster.
Have added IMDB to my favorites ... thanks much!!
The monster made gawd-awful noises, hulked, supposedly smelled bad and drooled everywhere ... it was so cheesy. It stole supplies all the time and hoarded them up in its hideaway. The curly-headed chick made friends with it in order to get food and some of their stuff back. Yes, it turned out to be harmless.
I had forgotten about Tim Curry. Big fan of his, at least his early stuff. He was a bad a$$.

Oh yeah, I was waaaaay too young to watch Twin Peaks but I did anyway. Honestly, I'm still disturbed by some of those episodes but it was can't-look-away televsion. I think Twin Peaks should also go down in history as having the all time creepiest theme song. I couldn't hum the damn thing if I tried but I remember being freaked out by it.
I also loved Northern Exposure. I used to watch the reruns on USA or A&E or whatever channel they were on. I also used to watch Quantum Leap when I was home on summer vacations. I remember it came on at noon on USA every weekday. My sister and I would eat lunch and watch it.

I forgot that Quantum Leap ever existed. That show was pretty great. It reminds me of another time travelling show from when I was a kid. There was this hunky guy who wore a puffyish shirt and leather vest who travelled with a kid in a striped shirt with maybe Chuck Taylor's and a afro. THey had a small brass device that would have a red light if their work wasn't finished and a green light if they could move on. What the hell was that show? My bro and I never missed it. Help me out people. I also remember that hunky guy died when he shot himself inthe head with a prop gun that malfunctioned. Does anyone remember this?

Ummm, hello? Thats only one of my favorite shows from the 80's, Voyagers. Remembered two more shows I never missed when they were on:
Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules
Great one-liners in both shows. Plus the fight scenes rocked.
Just thought of some more shows. I miss Behind the Music. Occasionally VH1 will roll out an episode but it's just not the same. I miss the Fleetwood Mac, Ozzy Osborne, Motely Crue, Red Hot Chili Peppers heyday. The funniest episode has to be the Oasis episode. They had to subtitle the Gallagher brothers and then Liam talked about getting kicked off an airplane because he got mad at a stewardess who wouldn't give him a jam tart. God, they're fun.
I also liked VH1 Legends, which was like, the classy, Behind the Music.
Also, I don't know if I miss it exactly, but I used to watch Charles in Charge. A lot. And I liked it. Without any irony.

Kids Inc. was a steaming pile of cheesiness. Really bad, really shlocky 80's style pop music sung by really obnoxious child actors with poofy hair. OH GOD it was bad.
You Can't Do That on Television was a kids program out of Canada. It was kind of an SNL for kids, with a cable-access feel to it. Little sketches. It's the one that splashed green slime on anyone who said "I don't know" or water if they said "water" (or "wutter" as they say in Canada).

Family double dare, was so fun. What was that other kid show on Nick; it was a bunch of kids doing skits. If you said a certain word you got slimed or got water dumped on you? I watched that a lot.
What about Salute Your Shorts and Hey Dude. I liked those shows from Nick.
There is this cool website where you can find all the shows you used to watch, they even have some of the opening credits.

I know I am dating myself but.... the first 'soap opera' I ever watched as a kid was Dark Shadows.
Does anyone remember that show? Barnabas Collins, Angelique, the vampires and werewolves? It was Goth before there was such a trend.

Is it bad that the only reason I've heard of Dark Shadows is because Sookie on the Gilmore Girls spent an episode sneaking into a room at the inn to watch it???

Oh my gosh, how could I forget about CHiPs palmtree? Did you know they are making it into a movie? I think Erik Estrada has a cameo, but unfortunately Fez is playing Poncho. I know he was the "cute" one, but I always liked Baker better. I know it's going to be bad becase none of the movies made from tv shows have been any good, but I'm still curious.
And Life Goes On (sorry, forgot who posted)-I cried when they killed of the jock-Tyler I think? Even though he wasn't the best actor, it was great to see the nerdy girl get both the jock & the arty guy. Even though Chad Lowe was like 35 when he was on the show, or at least he just looked that much older than everyone else. And who didn't love Corky?

There is no way I'm going to watch the movie then. I don't like Fez. What's funny is that when we were kids I always went for the blondies (Baker, blonde Simon) and my sister went for the dark haired ones (Ponch, darker Simon). I also have no desire to see the Miami Vice movie coming out. I didn't even like the show.

What about Magnum P.I.? That was great too. I remember being at a birthday party where the kid got a magic 8 ball. All the girls started asking it questions, one of which was "Is Magnum P.I. hot?" accompanied by vigorous shaking and giggling. My asexual ass did not understand.

If that's the case he is doing a fine job. I heard that Marine movie he did and then that air pilot movie sucked too. I am not a fan of his and please Colin Farrel as Don Johnson's character???? Yeah that fits. What a waste of money.
Thought of another show; Charles in Charge!! I loved it. I heard that Scott Baio was having a thing with Nicole who went on to be a Baywatch Babe.

Yep, I heard that too & as far as I know it's true-puts a whole new spin on the show now, doesn't it? Also when you figure Willie Aames was big into his drug habit at that time. (I think) Ok, here's another obscure fact-the innocent girl who played the younger sister in the second family, she played David's girlfriend on one of the later season's of 90210 & also recently played Jon Cryer's character's girlfriend on one episode of "Two & A Half Men." It's really scarey that I can know these things but ask me anything from high school calculus & you'll get a vacant stare in return.

No worries, I do the same thing. I keep telling everyone at home "hey that's the guy from so and so." I wish I watched Two and a half men, I'm sure I would have caught that. I saw the psycho girl Brandon was dating, the girl with the spikey bleached blonde hair on an episode of Cold Case. Do you guys watch Freddie Prinze Jr.? Brian Austin Green is on it and he looks surprising good considering the corny ass look he had on 90210.
I too used to love Magnum PI. Tom Selleck and his short-shorts? What's not to like.
I loved Charles in Charge. Here in CT a local station used to play Charles in Charge back to back with Saved By the Bell. It was awesome and pretty much everyone's guilty television viewing pleasure. It wasn't until we all got into high school that we admitted that we all went home and watched Charles in Charge and Saved By the Bell. It was a relief to know that EVERYONE was dorky.
I don't know if anyone will remember this show. This is a little obscure but...here goes...Anyone remember Salute Your Shorts on Nickelodeon? Oh!! And Hey Dude!!! Those shows were awesome. Christine Taylor (now married to Ben Stiller) played Melody on Hey Dude. And yes, I can still sing the theme song to both shows. Who brought the cool kid?

Maybe we should Add Gilmore Girls to the list (one of my fave shows of all time and the ONLY show I own every DVD season of). Now that the writers/creators left over contract quibbles (greed) it's just not going to be the same show at all (sniffle).
I was a big fan of the ole Tuesday Night line up on ABC with ShaNaNa, Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. Later they added Mork and Mindy but I only liked the earlier episodes of that. I wasn't a fan of the adult baby even if whathisnuts was almost funnier than Robin Williams.

Just read through the entire thread and didn't see anyone mention Men Behaving Badly. So it had Rob Schneider, but it was really good while it lasted.
Also miss Seinfeld, loved Wings, Moonlighting (up to when they got together for real), and I now miss In Justice which just disappeared without warning:confused: .
I remember Dark Shadows...but only because my parents wouldn't let me watch. We didn't get much TV here before cable was introduced in the country in the early 90s. We only got our second local station in the mid 80s!

So tell me where’s the party, and how come we weren’t invited?

Don’t wanna wear my glasses, I have to wear my glasses.
Why are we wearing this year what they were wearing last year?
Yeah, I’d be cuter without gum in my braces.
I hope the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts.
She said that she was, but we know she isn’t
And she said that she would but he hasn’t asked her.
He did - and we know it. But with whom? We can't guess it.
And they think that we’re the.
Square pegs, square pegs. Square, square pegs
Really funny - who broke the π button on my calculator?
May you be eternally grounded.
Me? Get juiced with The Cool Patrol?
Uh . . . no thanks . . . Why do you think they call it beer?
I mean...listen to him!

Yeah. I mean no. Huh? What?
No. I don’t think I have a bad attitude. Why?
Suspended? Suspended for what?
But they told me it was Senior Wig Day!

Now, what would I do with 200 peanut butter cups?

I also miss how The Real World used to be-how they actually had to work and earn money to buy food. If I remember correctly, the London cast had to scrape together money to get their phone turned back on, and I also remember in the LA season how everyone got so ticked at John because he just sat around all day watching tv & eating Cheetos.

Or when Montana got fired for letting that kid have a drink of her wine! Good days - but I think the producers figured out that if they made them work for a living they wouldn't be able to afford all the alcohol that makes them do all the stupid stuff that they think makes better TV - I think we can all thank Vegas for that.

I'm so glad someone remembers Bakersfield PD. It was truly hilarious. I still think of jokes from it. It had very deadpan humor, was multi camera and had no laughtrack, so it was doomed from the start.
I also miss another show no one has mentioned, Due South, about a Canadian Mounty in Chicago. A one hour drama, but also very funny. It was canceled after two seasons on CBS, and then revived for a third season (which was not as good) on Canadian TV. One of my favorite shows ever.
