I saw a tv spot for this recently. It seems kinda like "The Amazing Race"...the spot mentioned something about viewers having a chance to figure out the clues and win the money. May be interesting.

I saw the Treasure Hunt commercial last night. I thought it looked TAR-like also. Hopefully it will be as good because I can always use more tv in my life! And we might get treasure? I'm there!

Did you guys get to name your teams 'cuz you've got one of the better team names... I mean, seriously, who names their team: "Team Young Professionals?" At least on The Amazing Race everyone comes up with decent team names. But seriously, hope you guys are contenders till the end.

The name "Southie" is a nickname for the town of South Boston, Ma - hence the name "Southie Boys". We actually submitted 3 names and the producers like that the best and so the Southie Boys were born....Stay tuned its going to be fun!!!

I was in from the get go for this show but now that I know Alan Thicke is hosting, I have to be honest...not that excited anymore.

I'll of course still watch because I'm a tv junkie but Alan Thicke?! Even if he could come up with respectable competition for the PhilPackage, I wouldn't want to look.

Good luck, John! Now, I have to ask...you are a tvgasm reader that got cast on the show or are you just out pimping your sites to the forums that you found on a Google search? Either way I always love me some Southie representation on tv (one of my best friends is from Mass.)

I hope they don't show much of the host or make him do any voiceovers. That's why Phil is one of the best hosts because he's barely seen and not annoying. Since I saw Cooking with Celebrities, I know Thick's voice can be annoying. So hopefully he's not on that much.

Repeat? I thought it was new tonight. Or do you mean one of the billion repeats they'll air before next Sunday?

I'm still trying to figure out the whole downloading thing. I just searched TVgasm for information on how to do it because I could have sworn I read instructions somewhere but I couldn't find anything. But, boy howdy, do the folks at TVgasm like the word "torrent"! It surprised me how many times it turned up in their blogs (52 to be exact).

Argh! Just turned on channel 5 and it looks like I'll be skipping Treasure Hunters tonight. We had a little wind storm last night and half of my cable channels and my internet went out. Internet's back up (obviously... duh) but my broadcast channels are all blurry. Crap. I so wanted to win $10,000!

Overall I enjoyed the show, I have to say. It's been far too unfairly battered by the critics.

Double L

I have mixed feelings about the show. It's a combination of Eco Challenge, Amazing Race, & The Di Vinci Code. Casting right now I think is a bit iffy. Half the fun of The Amazing Race is that you have "characters." Editors love to show the funny and wacky and ridiculously stupid moments of the characters. Treasure Hunters take itself a bit too seriously - though this is what it makes it most similar to Eco Challenge. Editing wise, it's confusing and repetitive. There's so many teams, it feels like Amazing Race family edition. So little time to spend with each character. The editing needs to be faster pace like Amazing Race with quick cuts to each team instead of lingering too long. Also, it's just too damn repetitive. How many times do you need to repeat the instructions? Wait, are we suppose to go to Lincoln, Nebraska? I dunno, you repeated that like 6 times already. I got it! It's like they think we have short term memory. I also don't think it helped to have the two sets of teams in two different locations. It made it difficult to follow the story line.

The sponsorship thing is annoying, but I guess I'm okay with it. I just wish there was more interaction with the Host & Contestants instead of Mr. Cell Phone Host.

I'll give the show a benefit of a doubt and let it grow up. I mean, if you rewatch the first several episodes of first season of Amazing Race, it gets tedious with the slow editing pace. Half way through the season, they figured out what worked and that's what we see now in the current seasons. So we'll see if they'll learn what works and what doesn't. Overall, I give it a passing grade with a lot of potential. The challenges are smart and fun and I hope we get out of the US pretty fast!

BLOODY RISOTTO! Who was the genius to put Hell's Kitchen in competition with Treasure Hunters! This sucks 'cuz I have to watch Hell's Kitchen!!!

Alright. I watched the first half of the show. Keep in mind, I've only watched Amazing Race family edition (And a few eps of the last one). Anyway, so far the show is kinda interesting...a couple of comments.

How much time did the Brown family waste trying to come up with sports analogies to explain that they suck, but in order to win they need to stop sucking?

Weren't the boxes the same? Why were the "Geniuses" unable to open their own box?

Crazy Mullets freak me out. The hot girls need to step things up a bit. And I boo the ex-CIA bastards! Spooks!

Oh, and that cell phone host dude. He's totally trying to talk like he's a robot, or pretending that there is some kind of delay on the video feed. As if he was broadcasting from Fallujah.

Tabby Lavalamp

No doubt the foguls are weird. Those mullet folk are awesome, they literally didn't leave a stone unturned. I was joking with my bro saying that they'd try to enter the number on the other dudes shirt ("96")....and it wasn't one minute later that they did LOL

ryan07
06-19-2006, 03:01 AM
I like the show so far. I'll give the host the benefit of a doubt because he's quite handsome. His way of talking is really annoying though. I love the clues and some of the contestants. My favorite teams right now are the Southie Boys, the Air Force team, and the Grad students. I'm getting flashbacks of the Weaver Family with the Fogals especially with the praying and the screaming mom and the whiny daughter. I don't like them. I thought it was rude that the pastor took that girl's clue right out of her hands.

The Mullet folks are so funny and dumb. It was hilarious when he was just blurting out random numbers and when he was multiplying how many letters there are in the alphabet, to 2. The Brown family's kinda annoying. I hated it when they got to the beach and just sat there talking to each other. And they should've put the guy who doesn't know how to swim back into the boat until he finally does swim to the shore. If there was some other team there with them, that could've been so unfair.

jampony
06-19-2006, 05:16 AM
Well, that was interesting. I had a little trouble keeping up (short attention span -- I was trying to play the online game at the same time) but I think I might like this show once some more teams get eliminated.

I hate to admit it, but I'm secretly rooting for the mullet men. I liked at the end when they were having trouble getting their box open and they teamed up with the ugly boys (I don't know all the team names yet) and the mullet men got theirs open. The ugly boys asked what numbers they used and the mullet men said "same ones you used" (as they were sprinting down the hill with their map -- way to "team up" boys!), which obviously wasn't true. The numbers the ugly boys had said were in the wrong order. So, were the mullet men being sneaky for not telling the ugly boys the correct order of the numbers or were they just that stupid and got a mild case of number dyslexia and didn't even realize they changed the order of the numbers when they entered them?

PS: The online game is pretty boring. Every time I'd figure out a clue, I'd see it on the show like five minutes later. I should have just waited 'til the end to play. Also, not all clues are the same for every player. The Thomas Jefferson question that showed up during the show could be answered by text message or through an online form, but depending on which way you answered, you'd get a different clue. The one I got (via online form) sucked and didn't help at all. But, the game is so easy, I didn't need it. But, hell, if it might win me $10,000 I'll spend the 15 minutes a week playing! Maybe it will get better. And maybe NBC will get bigger and better servers for the dumb game so it won't take 10 minutes to load a page. And maybe monkeys will fly out my ass. Ya' never know.

zoobabe
06-19-2006, 05:27 AM
I'm not sure what you mean jampony b/c I played the online games too. There were two different games though. The one during the show for 10,000 dolars with the Thomas Edison question which I entered online (b/c I'm not paying the text message fee), and the more involved one for a chance at 100,000 dollars that will continue through all the weeks of the show. That one did take a long time for the page to load, but was pretty easy to figure out as they pretty much walked you through it. maybe at the end if you're still playing- we can share what our final guesses were for the location of the hidden treasure.

There were two different games though.
Duh. You're right... there are two different games going on. I got confused about that because after you enter your guess for the game that's played during the show they give you a clue for the online game (I guess if you use text messaging they send you an email) so I keep thinking it's one in the same. One and the same? One 'n the same? Whatever.

After I entered my guess for the nickname question (which was wrong, BTW, but I truly didn't believe they would be so obvious as to use dot and dash as the answer since the beginning of the show was all about morse code) I got a clue to be used for the online game; the message even said "click here to use this clue online" or something like that. I checked out the NBC message boards and the people who answered the question using text messaging got a very specific clue about where to dig; the clue I got was vague and sort of misleading.

I can't wait for this to be over to see what you and other people guessed. My first guess was just ridiculous! Too bad money's involved; unlike the Lost game, I doubt anyone's gonna be sharing info on this game!

PS: After you answered your guess for the online game, did a box pop up asking you to register? I tried twice before I got that far. Plus, after you register all your info, you have to go back and submit your answer a second time for it to actually work. That took two tries for me. Slooooowwww website. :(

Another PS: You had me worried about the prizes (as if I actually have a shot of winning) so I looked it up... "Each of the 10 Winners will win a Grand Prize of $10,000 cash. The Winner who wins the Treasure Hunt will win the Bonus Prize of $100,000 cash." Woo hoo! Momma needs a new pair of shoes!

jampony
06-19-2006, 06:25 AM
Oh for cryin' out loud... ignore my whole post! I was playing the game while watching the show and because I can't even walk and chew gum at the same time I got it all wrong. Someone on the NBC boards said they got an email from NBC about a clue and someone else mentioned the "raven" clue and my tired little brain put that together and invented a new clue. I have no idea how I even managed to complete the challenge. :(

zoobabe
06-19-2006, 07:25 AM
jampony- the clue I got after I answered the trivia question (I went for the obviuos and got it right- I was waiting to see my name posted!!!!) was "Shadows fall In Time", so it was kinda helpful as far as WHEN to dig. however- I didn't make a guess as to the location of the treasure b/c I thought that you weren't supposed to guess until the end when you have all your clues and the stuff on the table. so- I haven't guessed yet. Plus- if you read the official rules, the 10 people chosen to win the $10,00 and compete in the treasure hunt for $100,000 have to be able to fly out to the location of the hunt with short notice. What if I win, but my apes need me and I can't go?:p

I think the guesses are one per challenge. After I guessed, it said I could guess again after June 19 at 9 pm. I hope so, anyway, because my first guess was just dumb!

the 10 people chosen to win the $10,00 and compete in the treasure hunt for $100,000 have to be able to fly out to the location of the hunt with short notice. What if I win, but my apes need me and I can't go?:p
Maybe you can have the $10,000 even if you can't go (they say something about picking alternates and giving them $1,000 but all that legal crap is Greek to me). Think of all the bananas that could buy for your apes! And shoes! For me, not your apes. That would be crazy. Unless you're into that sort of thing.

Well, even if I blew my chances of winning, I don't mind. It's a fun little game that I can actually keep up with. That Lost game pissed me off and I stopped trying to play it. Seriously, how many people really know how decompile a flash file?

Well, John, at least you weren't one of the boring teams. I guess I've got a couple of questions:

1) It seems like a lot of the teams came in with a cut throat strategy, doing anything to advance like stealing clues out of other contestant's hands or stealing clue boxes and such. Just wondering, what the Southie Boys strategy coming into a game that you didn't know what to expect or how the game would be played?

2) When you guys finally met with the other half of the teams, what was the general vibe going on? Were people really surprised?

3) Now, come on, you can tell us. We already know Julie Chen is a robot. Is Laird a LairdBot? I mean... his repetitive nature to repeat clues over and over again, his robotic delivery, and his appearance only on cell phones. We MUST know!

Just wondering, what the Southie Boys strategy coming into a game that you didn't know what to expect or how the game would be played?

....we really didn't have any strategy coming into this game. we are very confident in our abilities... our biggest concern was losing focus and not beating the snot out of each other...there is no way that you can prepare for anything like this... the geniuses are highly intelligent individuals and look what they did - when you are playing this at real speed things are so much different!!!

2) When you guys finally met with the other half of the teams, what was the general vibe going on? Were people really surprised?

....honestly, not one team had a clue to what was going on!!! i thought it was mirrors, then i thought it was production playing a game on us - we were so SHOCKED!!!! i/we didn't realize what was going on until we met Laird.

3) Now, come on, you can tell us. We already know Julie Chen is a robot. Is Laird a LairdBot? I mean... his repetitive nature to repeat clues over and over again, his robotic delivery, and his appearance only on cell phones. We MUST know?

....Laird is not a robot.. he was awesome!!! I understand that a lot of you are fans of Jeff and Phil and would like Laird to be like that but this show is so different from TAR and survivor...don't you think he would have preferred to be in jeans and a cool dress shirt (ala phil)...he is also not stuck on an island while contestants are swimming through mud so he isn't allowed to wear cargo shorts....Laird is an actor and that was role that he was asked to do...he was GREAT!!! i have some read posts here bashing him but it is so unfair - he was great!!!

We still think he's a robot. Just because we make fun of iLaird, doesn't mean we don't like the guy. Heck, we make fun of Julie Chen of Big Brother, but we still love her and the show wouldn't be the same without her. I'm sure the show wouldn't be the same without everyone's favorite Corporate Sponsored Cell Phone Host. And thanks for answering my questions!

Just wait till you Treasures Hunters start getting TVgasm Recaps...

Laird's awesome. :) I love that he's different from Phil and Jeff and his unusual style of speech. And he's a handsome, handsome man. :D
Sure, I make fun of him, but it's all in fun. Anthony Clark on Last Comic Standing? Not liking him as a host so I rarely bring him up.

Ok.. I hate Laird. I really wanted to punch him out. He's just lifeless. And he got annoying fast. Pre-production is outdoing the post-production by a mile. God, the editing just sucks. They show too much drama instead of showing the hunters figuring out the clues. It's just really bad editing, and it's boring. A lot of it just seems fixed. I could argue that they just told the Hanlons to put water in the bucket so they can just go.

I have to give props to the pre-production people. The show is definitely clever. If the editing gets better, this show can give TAR a run for its money come Emmy time. It's just not exciting.

Brown Family - See ya! Thank God they got eliminated. I really really don't like it when they just talk instead of doing things. I hate the guy who needs help all the time. It's just sad when you get beaten by a team that has a member with a broken leg and had to be carried and by another team who left the task and got themselves some food. It's just pathetic. They can talk the talk, but they can't walk the walk. And all they do is fucking talk!

Wild Hanlons - They were funny at first, but now it's just pathetic. They are the stupidest people I've ever seen on reality television. They just keep guessing instead of looking around and looking for clues. I hate them now. I hope they go next.

Grad Students - I knew I had a reason for putting them in my top 3. They're my favorite team now. I'm glad that the Hanlons are so stupid and the Browns are so fucking slow. This team deserve to be there more than those 2 teams.

Geniuses I don't care for this team.

Miss USA - I don't care for this team either.

Ex-CIA Boring. However, I can't wait to see what they're gonna do to the Fogals for screwing them. I hope they do something.

Southie Boys Hotties! Why didn't they have clothes? Did they go swimming? I like them. However, they dropped to 3rd on my list. I think it's becuase of helping the Fogals. Helping's good, but I hate the Fogals. Like the ex-CIA, I really want these guys to screw the Fogals for their dirty little trick.

Fogal Family HATE! However, I did like them for a sec when they told the CIA and the Southies to stop at the 13th star and then booked it. I thought it was hilarious. And it is a competition so it's a good move on their part. However, my hate came back when right after they screwed those 2 teams, they had to make themselves feel better by praying. Own up to it! Did anybody catch the Fogals saying that they should pray for everybody else, and then when they got to the prayer they only prayed for themselves? This was the whole dialouge:

Ma Fogal: "Hey, can we say a prayer for everyone else? That was just... that was rough."
Pa Fogal: "Go ahead."
Daughter Fogal: "Go ahead."
Ma Fogal: "God, thank you for getting us through. We have nothing more than anybody else does. But we have you to draw on. Thank You. Amen."
Pa Fogal: "Amen. All right. Thanks. That always calms you down a little bit."

I thought it was hilarious. At first I thought it was the editing but when I watched it again, they clearly forgot to pray for everyone else. Or maybe that wasn't really what they wanted to do.

Air Force Matt R? Total hottie! He looks like Jeremy Bloom. The one in my avatar. They're my second favorite. They're smart, athletic, and consistent. I hope they stay around long with the Southies and the Grad Students.

Right now, I don't think there's any advantage in being first since they all leave at the same time. They should put 15 to 30 mins in between teams to put some excitement.

I really hope the editing of this show gets better. They gotta make it exciting. Less drama, more focus on the clues and the tasks and make it fast paced.

I don't know if I can watch this! I missed it last week and I was all excited because it sounded like a reasonable Amazing Race substitute for the summer, but between Laird's annoying speech patterns and the ridiculous camera shots / angles, I don't think I can stick with it. This is a really good example of a great concept show that has horrible execution. (Reunion, anyone?) And there's a line between having a diverse cast and putting on the most stereotypical people you can find (Hanlons, anyone?). Also think there might be a conspiracy against religious people...between the Weavers on AR and the Fogals on TH, God isn't coming out so good.

ryan07-did you see the previews? Looks like the Browns will be back & grad students are out, probably due to the injury.

I have a love/hate with the Hanlons. On the one hand I'm screaming at the tv every time they're on-c'mon, 11 frickin' hours in the cave??!! On the other hand the comic relief spices up the show a little. Poor kid, he's the only one that can figure anything out but because his uncle has an unrealistic opinion of his own intelligence he won't let him. Although I'm thinking he may be responsible for sightings of Big Foot-did you catch the chest carpet that matches the mullet? (shudder)

I noticed the Browns too - I even did a tivo rewind to make sure I wasn't mistaken. Does anyone else think that one Brown brother looks like Johnnie Cochran every time he puts on the black hat?

Also, those Hanlons crack me up - I love how they were taking notes of every scratch on the mine walls. Then again those Southie Boys were ready to start digging for diamonds.

The Fogals are definitely the team to hate now. It's one thing to screw the competition, but to screw the Southies when they FUCKIN' CARRIED THEIR CANOE for them is just wrong! Plus- the whole "prayer" thing afterwards was just bullshit. maybe it's time for them to step in a hole next.

I was hoping that the Hanlons would be eliminated this week. They're idiots and Texas doesn't need that kinda rep on TV. At least the fattie Brown brother didn't give up and go get a hamburger (and you KNOW he wanted to). The scene with him and his brothers was actually quite touching. It does seem like they're still in it next week though like you guys said. I noticed them in the previews too.

I just don't know how I feel about the Hanlons. They are so dumb - it is almost painful to watch. Picking up random rocks and sticks thinking it might be a clue. After they were in the mine for 11 hours and then they had to solve the puzzle to receive the compass - I went for a hamburger myself because I knew that was going to take a long time.

I thought the third episode was a mark improvement overall from the first two episodes. It seems they've gotten into some sort of groove. Less repetition and the cast seems to be falling into "their roles" quite easily. Nice elements of drama though awkward since not much time spent on the actual challenges. And not very helpful when the show sorta dumbs it down by providing the audience basic clues to figure the challenges out. You sorta want to solve the puzzle with the competitors and not have the advantage of a road sign telling you the clue. I'll keep watching.

And give the guys in Post a break, it's a new show. Rewatch the first season of Amazing Race and see how painfully slow the editing was.

Ok I am here. I didn't forget about you all. Now you all know what it feels like to be FOGALED!!!! Everything that you saw last night on the River is EXACTLY what happened. We were the 3rd team to find our canoe and that is why we were behind a bit. When we finally got in a groove (after almost killing each other because I almost tipped the canoe over) we caught up with the CIA's and the Fogal's. We knew that we had a huge lead over the rest of the pack (Hanlons were still sleeping in their tents) so we kind of just went through the motions and canoed side by side with the CIA's (Fogals right behind). When we got to portage our canoe the Fogals were struggling mightily and at this point we had no idea about the clue incident in maui with the Grad students. This was really our first time actually talking to them. If this was like TAR then obviously we wouldn't have helped. Long story short - we agreed that we all would stop at the 13th just in case because we didn't feel like canoeing up stream. Once we got out (CIA's in tow) the Fogals took off and never looked back....we got fogaled!!! Although they look like total scumbags they are really nice people. I love that we have a little fan base and I love reading all these posts...you guys/gals are great!! If you want to, come to our site www.southieboys.com and post in our forums. feel free to fire away and ask me and the twins questions. BTW - that was Martins ass but it was me who slipped. The reason we did that was we need to wash up after slipping in the mud in the mine and we needed to go the bathroom....they also didn't show that when we got to the camp, there wasn't any food left!!! we ate popcorn balls and shitty tasting granola on the river and all the way to tower rock...next week we head to )oops I can't say.....he not to keep pumping our website up (although we do love it) but if you head to our online store, purchase some southieboy gear, snap a pic of you wearing it, email it to us, we will post it on our site....yes we will post every pic!!!!

Ryan07, I'm new to watching Treasure Hunters (Hell's Kitchen wasn't on last night, just Adam Sandler in Mr. Deeds .... wtf??), so for the first hour I didn't realize I was watching last week's episode where the Southie Boys got Fogaled during the canoe task.

The second hour was a new episode ... though apparently not as new as the one you saw. ;) I hope Global airs last night's episode (the one I saw) for you soon, or you decide to download it, 'cause it's so worth watching the Hanlon's get eliminated. Weren't they the ones who insisted on going to Mount Roosevelt when they were teamed up with the first team to get eliminated? I didn't like their know-it-all attitute then, but they were a little more likable last night. I'm rooting for the Southie Boys but I wish they would have just admited to Team Air Force that they all ganged up on them because they're a strong team. That argument was a little juvenile. I can't stand the Browns. I was pulling for the Fogals because they were teamed with Air Force. I felt dirty rooting for them :( At least Air Force is still in it.

Actually, the Hanlon kid was the smartest of the three. Over all the episodes, he's the one who consistently found the clues and interpreted the clues correctly. He's also the one to figure out turning the lights out first. I was sad to see the kid go despite the rest of the family. :( The Browns, Miss USA, & The Hanlons (- the kid) are pretty useless teams.

I too was quite proud of the Hanlon boy. In a world were manners are losing ground by the minute, I thought it was quite grown-up of him to realize that things could have been handled differently and admit to it. I really hope that he doesn't turn out like his dad or uncle (although I did notice that they were the first ones up to hug and comfort the Grad students).

On the subject of Papa Hanlon, did anyone else notice the intense dislike he immeadiately spouted out for the Browns?

I really want to like this show, but the rules and challenges are so weird! Take last night's episode, the teams had to work together. Shouldn't they have had to meet up somewhere and physically put their halves of the clue together? That way the teams that went to the prison wouldn't have been so far behind the teams that went to the house. And, it seems like all the challenges are solved by one team (like whoever went up the lighthouse first) and the other teams just piggy-back on their solution. They also could have had them go into the school one at a time, been given a time limit to find the clue, and then the next team would go in. If they didn't find the clue, they would have to wait for all the other teams to go.

I know I'm being nitpicky, but a little order and structure would help this show. Less products, more challenges!

jampony- I'm still playing the online game. It was harder this time, but I perservered. :)

I think that the reason the Fogals made it to the prison before the other teams was that they were horribly lost and never got the initial clue. Team Air Force called them and told them where to go, so they were closer to that point than the other teams b/c they were so far away from the schoolhouse.

Absolutely agree with all - best episode so far, I may finally be sucked in to this show. I loved the twist of having an option to leave a guy behind...and I'm pretty impressed that so far all teams have gone back for their guy - though the Fogals really shouldn't have. I can't believe Kayte is a freaking adult behaving that way - but then, she can't even spell Katie right so what can you expect.

I'm very impressed that the challenges actually require thought / physical activity, especially when you consider that so far they've had as many contestants removed for physical injury as Survivor has in all of their seasons so far (I think).

Totally great ep.

agree about the Fogals, esp. Kayte. Suck it up, it's not like you'll never see them again! Be grown up enough to admit that you're a TOTAL liability.

Also about the Browns. Feel bad for them but how could you not know that this was going to be really physical?

i love how they are justwearing the teas down, with the long car rides and mucking in the swamps.

I actually yelled at the TV when "To Be Continued..." came up on the screen!

I think I missed something. Who was the second?

PS: I love the new avatar. It inspired me to sit through five minutes of excruciating boring-ness while waiting for the clip to load (great new computer... really crappy internet) so I could watch it.

Well I'm glad The Fogals came back for Kayte. The Race... er The Hunt wouldn't be the same without her. Heck, Team USA were hardly complaining. Meanwhile Kayte sounded like a 6 year old.

As for the Geniuses... um... they sorta ruin this cliffhanger with the series promo in the first episode... so if you're curious, take a look at that and you'll figure it out.

And the Browns? I'm not sure how this show will end, but the producers(?) should have taken into consideration the physical abilities of the contestants.

Um... how about the Mental Abilities of both the Browns & The Wild Hanlons. They weren't cast for their abilities to actually win the show, but for their personalities and drama potential. The same thing on Amazing Race with the obviously weak teams - usually the Old People team. As for the Browns, it should've been taken more consideration about their health. They're the most likely to die during The Hunt than getting injured.

Jessica of the Grad Students first, then Keith Brown second, though he timed getting hurt much better because the whole team doesn't have to withdraw.

I watched MYL eat the wasabi and it was funny, but as soon as the shot went to the close-up and he started making those faces, I thought AVATAR!

In case anyone wonders if Melissa of Team Miss USA was turning into a Kayte near the end there, she was hurt and it turns out had three hairline fractures in her arm.

For those keeping count, that's three injuries in five episodes, two of which have been game-ending.

Again, it's a completely different game from TAR and people really need to get over the comparing of the two.

Yes it is because someone managed to eclipse Flo from Amazing Race. I didn't think it was even possible.

I DON'T WANT TO HOLD THE FLASHLIGHT! :D

Treasure Hunters just need to:
A) Have a faster editing pace

B) Figure out how not to be so repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive.

C) Figure out a broader narrative/story line for the actual hunt. Sorta like The Goonies following Chester Copperpot. I just don't understand how all the clues and locations relate to each other. There's no real context. I mean in one episode they're in Boston. Next episode they're in New York with no rhyme or reason except production moved everyone to the new location.

D) Come up with a better elimination than a cell phone call. At least a cool catch phrase.

E) Expository maps of locations (yes, like Amazing Race)

As I said before, the show is more a combination of Amazing Race, Eco Challenge, and Da Vinci code. Someone actually died on the Eco Challenge and it's not uncommon to have game ending injuries on that show.

I laughed out loud when they were eliminated. Those self-righteous christians get my goat every time. I was so glad they finally got theirs.

Go Southies! I really hope they make it to the end along with Ex-CIA's (dark horse team for me). I was so nervous when they were all in the church and couldn't figure out the clue with the candles, etc. The Geniuses have to be credited also. Dunno, Air Force has been consistently good at solving challenges and been playing pretty fair with all the other teams. They haven't backstabbed anyone to get to where they are nor do they have annoying personalities. So I'm rooting for them to get further.

Miss USAs are a pretty useless team, they bring nothing but their pretty looks. Pretty much on every challenge they say: "This is the hardest challenge EVER!" And they pretty much follow all the other teams around. They don't deserve to win, IMHO.

As for the Southies, I'm pretty indifferent with them. I don't hate them nor do I really like them. ::shrug:: If they won, good for them.

Ex-CIA... they're the real dark horse of the game BUT they're a pretty boring team and don't seem to have any real story lines so it doesn't seem editing wise that they'll get to the end.

Evil Geniuses are pretty dysfunctional as a team. They're weak in physical competition and their "IQ's" don't seem to come into play all that much when other teams are figuring out the clues faster than them.

The Final 2 teams should really be The Southies vs. Air Force. And I'll leave it up them to fight it out to who wins. Editing wise, The Southies and Air Force have been getting a lot of air time with story lines so it seems they'll make it to Final 2. That's why Ex-CIA hasn't been getting too much air time.

Team Air Force don't have annoying personalities. That would require actually having personalities. If they make it to the final two, I'll have to struggle to stay awake.

It must have been my imagination when Melissa found the plaque in the Catacombs first. While they made a huge mistake in New York earlier (who hasn't made mistakes), they also had a fairly big lead when they got there in the first place. Most of the teams have been working together one way or another. It seems hardly fair just to pick on this team for taking help when they can get it. Heck, Air Force would have been gone this week without the Fogals.

I gained a lot of respect for Miss USA when they had to dig up those death masks and they were working in that sweltering heat for like 4 hours or something. Digging is hard. Especially for girls because we typically don't have the upper-body strength of men. I hate how they don't show the airport booking scenes though. Do they just book them on the same flight as to what order they find the clues in? I like how in TAR they give them an opportunity to catch up b/c of flights and opening times. Is the Eiffel Tower really open that late at night or did it just look that way? Plus- I'm no history buff but even I could figure out the association between France and the Statue of Liberty. I would have been looking for that right away.

I agree! When Laird was like "you've already figured out the secret of the map, so go straight to the Statue of Liberty" - what a freaking rip off...I don't think it changed the outcome but it sure smelled of favoritism.

I too thought the clue for finding the Statue of Liberty was pretty easy, but it would have been interesting to see how long the 3 groups lagging would have taken to find it. I just wanted to say that I was pissed that they portrayed Ex-CIA in such prominence from the beginning of the episode. I just knew they'd be going home once I saw that one guy getting drunk with the flappy hat and wig on (wtf).

I'd really like to know what it was like to climb out on that ledge of the 22 story building - that had to be just crazy-scary. With only that thin piece of string holding you up? Come on now.....

When the Southies cracked the cryptex, I was so happy for them. They all looked so happy! It was great!

My question: Does anyone think this finale going to be worth watching live, or do I tivo like everything else and zip through all the damn commercials?

TV Guide has this listed on both 8/14 and 8/21 so it looks like this will be a two part final. The 8/14 description says penultimate episode and 8/21 says it is the finale.

I really liked last night's episode. Mostly a nostalgia thing because Washington, DC and Baltimore were my old stomping grounds. I'm glad they made them cruise down the Chesapeake for a while instead of doing something lame like running around the inner harbor. Pretty cool set up they've done at the Key Industries building, don't you think?

I am still thinking (even more so now) that the LIve Finale will just have the teams there (due to that one preview) and the other LIVE part will be the Genworth winners doing their Treasure hunt stuff.

The previews showed all the teams in the crypt but I can't remember if there was intermingling. It went by so fast.

This was areally good ep. I like how this show turned out. I'm certainly on the edge of my seat rooting for Air Force :) But those Geniuses, man. If it's not a slow taxi then it's a navigation problem that will kill a team! :glare:

Did anyone even guess that the prize money would be that high? I guess I'm glad the Geniuses one. Nothing makes me smile more than a bunch of dorks celebrating. I think it's cute that they so wanted to hug each other but instead settled for the manly shoulder bump and kicking at the sand.

Tabby, that part (the wrangling of the Geniuses) had me cracking up! Like Laird couldn't give them one more minute to hug all the other contestants?!?

And what was up with the Fogels and the team with the pregnant chick (was that Ex-CIA?) -- did the Fogels really let them win a challenge?

ScotyUtah
08-22-2006, 05:46 AM
That was some serious ching they won last night! I thought it was pretty funny when Laird was trying to round up the Genuises when everyone was giving them hugs. I don't know if it was editing but if Muttonchops had a sudden epiphany to figure out the cypher, that was pretty sweet. Nice job by the other shlub who appeared to sleep most of the time. It was good that the cypher code was a little bit more difficult because it meant the chance of totally lucking into another clue was reduced for the Southies.

yeah - it was a good finale. the geniuses deserved the win b/c all three final teams had a legitimate shot at it and they got it first. they should really thank Frances for coming up with the solution to the cryptex b/c he did win them a whole hella-lotta money! Now jenny and I know how close the other challenge was too, which made me feel bad for the CIA's. As far as the Fogal's go, I was waiting for someone in the audience to boo at dad's answer b/c he was SO trying to cover his ass for being a dirty player at times. the Air Force team SAID that they let them win that challenge, but I never saw them stop playing on the show and they were in the church at the same time, so I don't know how they could have edited it that way. Laird really showed his weknessness last night as a live host. I guess that's why he's better at phoning it in.

Was anyone else incredulous at the fact that the online winners in the race for 100K were WALKING everywhere? if I knew I was one clue away from that much money I would at least break into a jog! That challenge looked pretty easy too, so I was yelling "run you fat bastard-run"!:rolleyes2:

I was realllllllllllly disappointed in the finale. I mean all of the suspense was over at the 14 minute mark. Laird could not control the live show at all and the seating arrangement was bizarre. Plus they were on a super long stage and set so far away from the audience - it was just weird.

Way to make the biggest prize in history seem anti-climatic. Sheesh.

They need to edit to the drama and figure out a better way to work their finale.

CONGRATS to The Geniuses! They deserved the money after that Cryptex even though I wanted The Robot Airforce to win.

And I totally enjoyed the lame reunion just for the awkwardness of Laird. I loved how he said "But first..." and I enjoyed how he had absolutely no control over the contestants. And anything that was spontaneous, there was this awkward pause from him trying to figure out how to respond. It was awesome. ChenBot would totally laugh at him!

I'm predicting a rather vicious cat mauling right about now...

From Reality Blurred (http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/treasure_hunters/2006_Aug_22_geniuses_win):
It wasn't until the last few seconds of the live finale that they learned its actual value: $3 million. It's the largest single cash prize given on a reality show, although ultimately each team member gets $1 million, although that's still better than The Amazing Race. There was, however, some fine print that the Geniuses will learn about later; we saw it in the closing credits that basically says they won't get all of the treasure today:

"The $3,000,000 prize is payable in the form of a monthly annuity payment to each winning team member paid over 25 years totaling $1,000,000 or any winning team member may choose to receive a cash prize equivalent to the present cash value of his/her annuity."

However, there are aspects of the show where TH could handle being a little more like TAR, but only in a couple of places.

I really hope they bring this show back. I hadn't seen the Amazing Race before, so I didn't understand all the comparisons. Now, after seeing both shows, I can say I like TH better. The contestants actually needed intelligence to compete. On TAR, it's just a bunch of people being told what to do. There's a lot of luck involved, but the hardest thing they need to do is read a map. Also, it seems like the producers on TAR can change the rules as they go, depending on who they want to win. Even the challenges on TAR seem easy to manipulate. I just saw a couple of shows where the outcome of the challenges was determined by locals "judging" how the contestants did (olive grinding, for example) which just seems way too subjective to me. After all the gasm hype about TAR, I was really disappointed when I actually saw it. And I still don't understand all the TH hate. Sure it was cheesy but that was half the fun!

Unfortunately it never got the ratings, so sadly some great competitive reality contestants aren't getting the recognition they deserve. The Southie Boys? Pure gold! To see a team waste time fighting when they should have been searching was fantastic, and John was one of the hottest reality men ever. Team Miss USA? Precursors to TAR's Beauty Queens, these women rocked. Sure, they made mistakes, everyone does on these shows, but they actually got screwed by getting ahead of teams they had been working with. And Melissa got a hairline fracture in her arm on the one digging task, causing her to play the rest of the game in some pain and hobbled but still competing.
The Fogals, one of the best villainous teams ever. Even when they realized the negative reaction their gameplay aroused in the other teams and how it was hurting them and they changed it, we still had Kayte whining and screaming to keep us booing them until the very end.
Not one but two game ending injuries, one of whom - Jessica with the Grad Students - was able to finish the leg with help from her teammates who were literally carrying her at times, and they still were able to beat a couple of the other teams.
The Wild Hanlons. Team Mullet. One of the best, most entertaining stupid teams ever. They actually stopped hunting at one point to go get hamburgers, but somehow managed to get back in time. This was also the team where two members managed to get lost in a mine for some eleven hours. Oh, that was sweet.
A lot of the clues were tough as well, which made that entertaining. Unfortunately, one of the problems was that despite all the accusations that they were trying to be too much like The Amazing Race, they weren't enough like TAR. I know a lot of people were confused how the teams could end in one location, but start out the next day in another. There were also a lot of time equalizations that were never explained. The thing is, because it was a hunt, not a race, the producers thought that none of this mattered, and it did. Why cheer for a team to finish first in a leg if it doesn't make any difference in the morning?
The product placement was another flaw. It's a part of competitive reality shows, no doubt, but there are decent ways to integrate it. Nobody says "We have a Motorola Message" in real life, and making the contestants say that sounds awkward and takes the audience out of the moment.
Another criticism was the host, Luscious Laird. He was often called robotic and wooden, which I didn't think was fair because he was working within the restrictions given. Only once did he get a chance during the hunt to interact with the contestants, and that takes away a lot of the humanity of the host. Would Phil be as good as a prerecorded face on a cellphone? Would Jeff? He would have been much better used if only some of his instructions came over the phone, and the rest in person. Even better, take something inherently cheesy and up the cheese factor. Play around with that. Don't take yourselves so seriously.
There were three controversies in the hunt as well where the producers made questionable decisions. This wouldn't happen if all contingencies were considered before hand (if they were, it didn't seem like it while watching), and the all of this put in a book of official rules given to the contestants.
Controversy 1 - The Grad Students pulled out of the game, so the producers allowed the Browns, who were eliminated in the last leg, to rejoin. This really upset the elder Hanlons, which is understandable, but I can also see why the Browns were allowed back in, as no non-elimination legs were planned. If the official rules stated "Should a team choose to withdraw, the team previously eliminated shall be allowed back in the hunt," the Hanlons would have had nothing to complain about.
Controversy 2 - When Tonny Brown hurt his leg, his brothers were allowed to stay in the hunt. The reasoning was, they were about to get to a clue that allowed teams to dump one member and race as a team of two. The problem was, the Browns hadn't reached that clue yet. If the producers figured this was going to be an option anyway, why weren't the Grad Students given that chance? It was a questionable decision.
Controversy 3 - When the Southies thought of pouring water on their map while riding the Metro in Paris, it turned out to be exactly what the next clue was going to suggest if properly deciphered. So they and the two teams who were with them were given directions directly to the cars waiting for them, which meant they were able to skip a clue. At the very least, they should have had to find that clue so they would have to find the cars by themselves, just like the other teams did.
I know I'm biased as the Miss USAs were one of my favourite teams, but they were royally screwed by that decision. The extra time it would have taken the three last place teams to search for the cars may have helped keep the women in the game, but that didn't happen and so we'll never know what difference it may have made.
On TAR, the BQs managed to find one of the Detour choices and complete it without finding the Detour clue. This was pretty much the same thing, but the BQs were sent back to get the clue before they were allowed to be officially counted as reaching the Pit Stop. That's the proper way to handle it.

I do believe this is your longest post on this site ever Miss Tabby...too bad the actual show wasn't as interesting as this.

Heck, I think it's longer than my last Apprentice blog. :D

I though the show was interesting, but like I said, people went in expecting more of a TAR clone and when it wasn't enough of one, their expectations weren't met so they didn't enjoy it. That's why I believe on of their biggest mistakes was in not emulating TAR more.
All the pieces were there. Entertaining teams, interesting puzzles, handsome host, Ask.com, and injuries galore. What killed them was some poor pre-production planning and in some poor post-production choices.
