Okay, somehow I missed the first season of Last Comic Standing, which is strange considering I loooove comedy and comedians. I did however watch season two and loved it. After the misguided revamping in season 3 and the cancellation before the winner was announced, I was very shocked when I saw a commercial touting a new season of this show.
I really hope they're going back to the successful formula of the house and the one-on-one competitions.
And I also hope the contestants chosen are a little less controversial (i.e. not so affiliated with Jay Mohr or the same agents).

Nobody? That's not promising for the season...

lol....I admit, I haven't seen any of the previous seasons (or even an episode of that matter). Same goes for ANTM.

How edgy are the comedians generally? Any political stuff?

Tabby Lavalamp
05-18-2006, 01:51 PM
They vary. Unfortunately they can only be as edgy as primetime on a network will allow. But there is still usually some quality stuff. Of course there is some crap as well. Ralphie May was way overrated as far as I was concerned (I saw him on season 3).

Thanks for the redirect Firecat.

Season 1 was ok - but the winner Dat Phan or whatever his name was dropped off the face of the earth.

Season 2 was good - love love loved Gary Gulman.

Be interested to see how it is this year minus Jay Mohr.

Ok fine Firecat. Tink- did you read my posts about Gary Gulman before? I can't believe that you like him too! Yes he is funny and adorable and yes I did discover him from LCS and so that's why I'll watch it again. Have you ever seen him live? He's really gracious to his fans.

btw Tink- you can see Gary on June 11th on HBO when they show the premiere of Tourgasm. I need to find someone to tape it for me b/c I don't have HBO.

You know, I think the reason I didn't watch before is because of Jay Mohr (no rhyme intended). I just find him kinda annoying, maybe I'm just not over what he did to Jerry Maguire....or maybe it's because he's engaged to Nikki Cox, bastard!

The host this season is Alan Thicke!

Just kidding. I did that in another thread and almost cost Treasure Hunters a whole bunch of viewers. :)

A good host is important, but I REALLY hope they get back to the basics of a houseful of screwed-up comedians.

I thought that the host was the guy from Yes Dear. Anthony something.

Firecat- wasn't Nikki Cox also engaged to Bobcat Goldthwaite at one time? In that case- she couldn't be that hard to get- you just need to be a comedian I guess.

Yup - already planning to catch Tourgasm. I get Gary's e-newsletter from his e-mailing list. I saw him live last year - took Mom to see him for Mother's day - we had front row seats and my neck was sore by the end from the strain of looking up so high - but damn was it worth the pain. He is just adorable.

I wrote him an email the next day thanking him for putting on such a great show and he actually wrote me back. I had my first emailgasm when I saw him in my inbox. ;)

He was the first one I added to my MySpace friends. :)

Oh - now that you mention it - I heard that too. Last week Ralphie May was giving an interview on the local radio station. He said he had been originally asked to host but he insisted on being made a Producer and being allowed to write his own material. NBC wouldn't go for that. He said that choose Anthony Clark instead and he went on and on about how Anthony Clark is a drunk who has to pretty much be propped up and fed lines.

Oh god. We came that close to the vastly overrated Ralphie May as the host? That's one bullet dodged anyway. "Look at me, I'm a fat white guy talking all gangsta, word!" No thanks. I really don't get his popularity. Season 3 had me sweating like crazy that he'd pull off an upset and win the whole thing.
Honestly, I don't think I would have watched if he was the host. Give me Alan Thicke any day. Seriously.

Didn't think I had seen this show before until I read your comment about Dat Phan. Now I remember watching it. I thought Dat Phan was 'okay' funny. I just checked the internet and read a couple of entries in his online journal. It looks lilke he's doing standup but staying pretty close to CA.

Maybe you can start a thread when the new season starts. There's bound to be some good material for us to snark about.

Well- I just finished watching it. There were a lot of good comics and some true LOL moments. My fave line was the big guy that said "I grew up with an imaginary friend. He was an alcoholic-I called him dad". Very funny! I also thought that the guy with cerebral palsy was funny too. We haven't had a famous CP comic since Gerri from "The Facts Of Life".

one disturbing fact though is that I found out some info. from my sis about one of the comics that makes me think that our voting doesn't really count. We'll see how the show plays out though.

I've seen every episode of all three seasons. Season 1 was okay but Season 2 was a gazillion times better. I think the reason Season 3 didn't work out is because the S2 talent was so much stronger than S1, the face-off thing just didn't work. At any rate, I watched tonight and it looks like it's going to be good.

I was actually surprised that they threw in a couple of ringers into the mix... people who have some sort of "relative" fame on Below The D-List.

Theo Vonkurnatowski: Road Rules & The Road Rules/Real World Challenge. Nice to see him attempt to whore himself on another Reality Show. But it'll be funny to see how well he does since we sorta know him already.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0961918/

Bil Drwyer: a little bit of stuff from everywhere, definitely a E-List celeb.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0245475/

Doug Benson: another E-Lister that you can catch on Best Week Ever on VH1
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0072476/

Marc Price: Skippy on Family Ties... they should let Skippy advance. :(
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0697027/

And Buck Star is back. If you didn't know, on Last Comic Standing 3, Buck Star auditioned in every single casting city... and every single time he's on screen, he's lame and continues to be lame. I'm surprised he hasn't tried this schtick on American Idol and appear in every single city.

Anyways, Doug Benson & Bil Dwyer will probably advance further into the competion since I guess they have more professional experience and have some sort of success in the business. Hey, once you reach the level of VH1 commenter on Best Week Ever and I Love the 80's, you're pretty much golden.

My favorite awkward moment was when they mentioned how successful John Hefron & Alonzo Bodden were and forgot to mention Dat Phan or the fact John & Alonzo are still D-List Reality Stars. :(

Alonzo: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0090785/
John: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0373611/

Sorta like how Ruben & Fantasia are currently and how Taylor will be next year.

There are a lot of established (working) comics on that show that go on to give their career a boost. It just helps put their name out to a wide variety of people so even if they don't win, they'll be recognizable enough to book more gigs at larger clubs because they already have a following.

Maybe it was my glass of wine, but the cerebral palsy guy made me cackle when he told the phone number joke and said , "don't mix em up."
All in all, the season looks promising. I laughed out loud a few more times than I have in seasons past- I just hope it's not like it has been and you get repeat material as the comics advance. I know you do the same bit in every city, but give us a little fresh material every week when you're on national tv.

I loved the Willy Wonka guy, I think he'll go far. And this other guy, Moody McCarthy, he was on for like 5 seconds and kinda funny, but he looks just like an ex of mine so I was curious about him. one disturbing fact though is that I found out some info. from my sis about one of the comics that makes me think that our voting doesn't really count. We'll see how the show plays out though.

There was some voting trickery alluded to in the first season when Drew Carry got all uppity and walked off. Then in that interview on the radio last week Ralphie May made several not so subtle remarks indicating that the producers pick the winners. Every time he tried to go down that path the DJ's would cut him off. I kept wanting him to finish the thought since I've suspected that sorta chicanery in a lot of these types of shows.

I call shenanigans!

Found this on Wikipedia:

Controversy

One of the concepts of the show involved the fact that a panel of four celebrity judges were utilized to help whittle the 40 semi-finalists down to 10 finalists. However it was revealed unintentionally that the celebrity judges did not actually have any legitimate power over what final contestants were chosen. During the second season, when the 10 finalists were announced, two of the celebrity judges, comedians Drew Carey and Brett Butler responded in outrage and stormed away from the judge's table.

The two were then shown backstage arguing with producers; they did not understand how the finalists who were announced could possibly be correct as it did not add up with their votes. It was revealed that a panel of four producers were also casting votes in the process, assuring that unless all four celebrity judges cast the exact same ten votes, a highly unlikely event, their voting power could be usurped by the four unanimously agreeing producer votes. (If for some reason all four celebrity judges did cast the exact same votes, the worst the producers would be faced with is a tie.)

Carey became further outraged upon learning this information; he expressed that he was infuriated that he had been lead to believe he had an actual say in the outcome of the show when "all you wanted was our faces" (In other words, their presence was meaningless except to draw in viewers based on their star power.) Ultimately, the legitimacy of the program and contest was compromised as it was proven that contestants were not being chosen based on the quality of their stand-up comedy, but in fact at least partially on how entertaining their interactions while living together would be for a television audience. Most of finalists are in fact clients of the producers or directors of the show.

It is also alleged that some of the competitors in opening rounds are in fact plants hired by the producers to liven up the auditions on television. Buck Star, a comedian who would follow Read & Mark to auditions across the company, is rumored to be a production assistant for NBC.

Trivia

A few established comedians have appeared as contestants on Last Comic Standing. They include Doug Benson (Best Week Ever), Gabriel Iglesias (All That and Comedy Central Presents), Bil Dwyer (Battlebots and I've Got a Secret), and Jimmy Pardo.

I also know that I discovered my fave comedian from LCS though, and he has told me personally how much the show did for him as far as making him more popular and so I can't fault the show for bringing good comics more recognition.:)

Season 2 was good - love love loved Gary Gulman.
I saw him in Boston a year or so ago! VERY funny guy.
And I actually know Alonzo Boden, who performed at the same Boston show with Gary...he's a great guy, and REALLY funny as well.

I'm such a jaded skeptic, at this point none of the shenanigans that come out about 'reality' shows surprise me at all. They don't even rate a raised eyebrow! I shrug my shoulders, and continue watching. I guess I just ASSUME that there are shenanigans going on everywhere

What I have hated most about this show (and others like it) is the 'house' part of things. I just want to see THE COMEDY ACTS! That's what I'm tuning in for!

What I hate most about this show? That it made Ant even more successful than he was. What an annoying person. His nickname is perfect, since ants are one of the most annoying things that God ever created. Actually, I blame Satan for them, and for Ant.

What I hate second-most about this show? The inclusion of people who've "already made it", at least to the degree that you see them and think "Hmmm...I know that person. I've seen them before. But, where?"
My preference would be Fresh Meat each season...all nobodies and newbies.

So far, from what I've seen, I think that the frizzy-haired guy (who called himself Willy Wonka (sp?)) is one of the funniest.

Have to agree - he was my favorite - I laughed at every one of his lines....and even better, I've never seen him before! Wish I could remember the joke he told that made me laugh hardest...its driving me nuts.

I know to be on American Idol you can't have a current recording deal so that helps keep it to un-discovered people, but I guess with comedians you'd have a tough time setting guidelines for who is too "discovered" to compete - I knew I'd seen Gabriel Iglesias before (very large ethnic guy in a Hawaiian shirt) and he did jokes straight from his Comedy Central Presents segment, and Doug Benson has a weekly job at Best Week Ever...maybe they could set a limit based on the number of minutes of national television exposure...maybe I think too hard about these types of things.

After the first season result, I stopped watching the show (Dat Phan was not funny, and dat's dat). (However, it was funny when they played hide and seek with him, and he hid for about a week, but nobody went looking for him.)

This time around, I stumbled on the tryouts and had some giggles. A couple of very funny people made the cut, so I am going to try it again.

Best event I saw in year 1: the Polaroid/scavenger hunt. Hilarious. The really big guy from Texas didn't go anywhere, just stood in one spot and shot some film, and he didn't lose the challenge. Too funny.

Unlike most of you, I was pretty dissapointed in the talent last week. There were definitely some solid performances, but a lot of the people who got through really just weren't funny to me.

Ones that stood out, from what I can remember (forgive me for forgetting all their names):
"Willy Wonka"
The big mexican guy (Iglesias)
The Biker looking guy who referred to himself as looking like a lesbian
the guy with CP
The black dude in Miami who talked about being small and very un-ganster
The blonde chick who barely made it to the call back. (I thought her e-harmony joke was hilarious)

There were some other funny ones, but nothing all that impressive to me.

I have been watching since the first season and I don't see this being as good as the first two.

I'm still mad about Dave Mordal losing in the first season (especially losing to Dat Phan... What a load of crap). He is the funniest guy the show has had, in my opinion. I actually developed a little bit of a crush on him, in a "he's old enough to be my father" kind of way... :o

I enjoyed the performances tonight.

I can't recall any names, but I think there were several comics that were funnier than Joey Gay...so I don't think he should have made it. The other dude who had his mic cut off was funny and has good delivery, but I don't think he performed that well (even though i'm kinda glad he made it).

Theo had a funny piece, but he needs to work on his skills a little more. Same with Nikki Glazer. The biker dude was pretty funny. Josh Blue(?) was by far the funniest. The first dude has some funny material as well, and he was very animated....

Well, those are my thoughts on that....

Chris Porter was hugely disappointing. French-bashing jokes? When did we travel back in time to 2003?
Joey Gay isn't funny, just loud, but the producers want characters in the house.
April Macie instead of Nikki Glazer? I guess if you want to avoid annoyances like "funny" in order to appeal to a wider audience. Bland works. Tig Notaro would have also been a good choice for one of the women going through, but I'm sure the producers thought looked a little too dykey for that wider audience they want.

Roz and Joey Blue were good choices though.

Yeah, that French thing was terrible. I thought he would go the route of pointing out how stupid all the French bashing was, not take part in it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that disliked Joey Gay, he's just going to get louder and more annoying....

The audience didn't seem to respond that well to April Macie, but Kathy Griffin seemed to like her. Why didn't they have these judges(?) comment on all the comics? Or did they and NBC just not show it?

All in all, I guess I'd like to see more of Nikki Glazer...I like that kind of comedy.

I'm not really a good judge of comedy because it takes a lot for me to get me to laugh and sometimes I'll start laughing hysterically because of the most random thing. But the only real laugh I had was with Tig... the No Moleste just cracked me up.

And knowing that the guest judges had no real say in chosing the contestants is kinda disappointing.

The audience didn't seem to respond that well to April Macie, but Kathy Griffin seemed to like her. Why didn't they have these judges(?) comment on all the comics? Or did they and NBC just not show it?

20 Comics X 3 minute stand up = 60 minutes. The average 60 minute show - commercials is usually around 45 minutes. So they pretty much edited out the judges comments and edited the stand up routines. I'm pretty sure the guest judges did ask all the commedians questions and only those questions that were relevant to the "story" were shown.

Also on Reality Blurred they mentioned that 50 comics were invited to the Final Round of auditions. So like 10 of these people were magically edited out of the show.

I watched last night, and had some good laughs. I am definetly dissapointed that the guy that went last and is very loud made it through (Sorry, don't know the names either.) and the big lady made it through. She was funny, he was not, but I thought there were funnier people that didn't make it through. The no moleste lady was funny and the girl that almost didn't go through during audition should have went through. And the guy that made the joke about his daughter wanting a cell phone, that made me giggle too. I am glad that Theo didn't go through.

I can't believe so many people liked the no molesta lady (tig?). I thought she was beyond terrible. Joey Gay is awful. I was surprised when he made it to callbacks, dissapointed when he made it to the top 40, and now i'm approaching pissed that I have to see him week to week in the house. Something tells me he wont be eliminated as quickly as I would like. I like comics with variety and his whole making fun of arabs thing has already gotten old. Do something different! And don't yell all your jokes!

Roz was guilty of the yelling thing too but at least she was funny, so I'll let it slide... for now.

I was dissapointed that the biker guy (wild willy somethingoranother, i can't remember) didn't make it through. I still think he's really funny, and light years ahead of joey gay. The more I think about him getting through, the more pissed I get.

Josh Blue was hilarious. I'm glad he got voted. I hope in the future though that he'll tell some jokes that don't involve his condition. I love that he can make fun of himself, but like I said, I like variety. Just as I don't want to see Joey Gay only talking about arabs or Dat Phan only talking about his mom, I hope Josh Blue will spice it up a little bit.

In all fairness, we do have to understand that each comic got three minutes and we only saw an edited version of most of the sets, so they could have had more laughs then we saw. They did seem to highlight some of them receiving the judges critiques, which tipped you off as to who the finalists would be.

There are charges of producer influence on every reality game show, but LCS takes it to a whole new level. As long as I'm entertained though and the producers don't choose the winners (Quiz Show, anyone?), I don't mind.
The only problem with the five that have gone through is I don't see myself being as entertained as I could be.

You'd think yes Tabby, but funny is subjective. A lot of people didn't think Gary was funny when he was on LCS and bitched about producer influence, but I thought he was hysterical and still do.

My only guess on this is that they showed the unfunniest parts of the winners and the funniest parts of the losers. Because we will be seeing the winners more often, and have more time to see their entire set. They wanted to be nice to the losers and show their best jokes so that people will want to go see them when they are performing live.

At least that is my hope, because most of their picks were pathetically unfunny.

Double L

I'm sure they showed the best parts of the stand up for each contestants. However, of course, if your set included a long joke, they probably edited out that joke in favor a short jokes that goes in the pacing of the show.

As for the choices of the contestants, let's face it, if Simon Cowell can admit that they choose not the BEST singers for American Idol but the singers with interesting stories/personalities. I think we can safely assume that the BEST characters who will interact with each other in the LCS house were cast onto the show and not necessarily the best stand up comics.

Stella was terrible. I was a huge fan of Malik S., but there were 3 or 4 people that were funnier than Stella. I like standup comedy and I like the format of the show, but each season, it becomes more and more difficult to watch given the selection of comics. Stella? Joey Gay? I call BS. This season could be so much better than we all know it will be.

Have to agree - he was my favorite - I laughed at every one of his lines....and even better, I've never seen him before! Wish I could remember the joke he told that made me laugh hardest...its driving me nuts.
There were two that had me laughing out loud (which is unusual for me). The one about directing traffic with his arms waving all over the place was hysterical. The other was when he told the audience they were going to hell for laughing at him. That was great!

And I have to be honest... I've often felt that way. Like watching Timmy on South Park. Am I allowed to laugh or is that wrong? I work with people with developmental disabilities (I'm especially sensitive to the word "retard" or "re-tahd" if we're talking about Danny) so I was almost offended when the audience gave Josh a standing ovation. He's just like every other comic up there, except he's got a physical disability. Nobody went crazy for the chick with the lisp. But I agree with JBJS that Josh shouldn't just talk about his disability; he needs to have a little variety in his routine. Wow. I feel really tall standing here on my soapbox. Sorry 'bout that. If it happens again in the future, feel free to kick it out from under me.

I think I'm all caught up with the episodes on Bravo now, although I must have missed some of the earlier ones because I didn't hear some of the jokes you all were talking about. Is the next step moving in together or something? Can you tell I've never seen the show before?

it was funny tonight. having them heckle each other was cool 'cuz you got to see the claws come out a little. I think that the strategy of taking 3 comics to the challenge, with only 1 coming back was done to insure the pace of the show moves along faster before people get bored and stop watching.

I think the reason people loved Josh is because he made fun of his disability without being an idiot...so you could feel like you were laughing at him, not his disability. With the lisp girl (no idea what her name was) she played up the stupid side (duct tape in her hair? seriously?) so even if you thought she was funny you felt bad for laughing at her. Not sure if that makes sense, but there it is.

I liked the heckling part too - I can't decide if I think Joey Gay not heckling was too gimmicky or what, but it was interesting. I haven't watched previous seasons - do they do some sort of task or event every week?

I like the voting method - whoever gets the most votes can only pick from the people that voted for them to go up against - would be neat to see that incorporated into other reality shows. "I know I'm a better Houseguest than _____" :) The BB houseguests nominate one person, then that person picks from the people that nominated them. Imagine the strategy that would come out then!

I think he said something about wanting to do well on his own merits, not by bashing another performer - which would have been commendable if he hadn't ruined it later with that message.

I think alot of them are using the same jokes:
Roz: I don't got jokes, I got problems
Josh: This is my Make a Wish
Stella: three weeks pregnant
Some of them don't sound as recycled because they adjust it to fit the audience or even the heckling (Josh saying "this is a crappy Make a Wish" in response to the heckler)...but I think we're in for a lot of recycled material.

It's obvious that Stella, Roz and Joey Gay were put on the show simply to create drama. I'm still mad that Doug Benson didn't make it on, as he was by far the funniest, but I guess he just wasn't a big enough jerk.

I realize this is not a popular opinion, but I never found Gary Gulman attractive at all. I also didn't think he was all that funny. He has a certain "aw, schucks" thing about him, but that's not really my taste. Sorry, girls!

Maybe I was imagining things, but it looked to me like Joey Gay just couldn't think of anything to say when April was performing. When the camera was on him he had sort of a confused/panicked look on his face. It seemed to me like he just couldn't hang, so he used the "getting by on his own merit" thing as an excuse. Maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Actually, I think it was a great strategy NOT to piss off anyone in the competition. You can be a dick in confessional and be Mr. Nice Guy to everyone's face. I doubt he thought they showed the voting in front of the rest of the cast. Oops! This isn't Survivor!

Nah, I think it's purely strategy to NOT piss anyone off at you especially this early in the game. This ranks up there with Sean's alphabet voting strategy on Survivor.

Some of them don't sound as recycled because they adjust it to fit the audience or even the heckling (Josh saying "this is a crappy Make a Wish" in response to the heckler)...but I think we're in for a lot of recycled material.

I think most of them only have one stand up routine with their staple jokes and some new ones they throw in. If a joke works, it works. And you're going to keep on using it since you know it works. That's why they'll edit the routines and cut out old stuff you've heard before. Not many people are brillant enough to come up with a NEW routine every single time they have to perform. Are you really going to risk it and use some untested jokes or use jokes you know will make people laugh?

Gabriel got booted for being an IDIOT. He smuggled a Blackberry in, when their contract specifically states no cell phones, etc. THEN, AFTER he got caught, he snuck out or missed curfew or something at like 3 in the morning to call his girlfriend to tell her about it. He justified it as "well I wasn't spilling the beans on the show I was just keeping in touch with a loved one" - this is why they put in the whole "house phone" segment at the beginning of the show where they talk to loved ones and explain they get a phone call every other day. How long are they really sequestered anyway? It can't be more than a few weeks...is it really so hard not to talk to "the love of your life" for 48-hour stretches? My husband has been on 8-month deployments and we got by just fine.

Sorry, I lost all respect for him after that - acting like his girlfriend is just so critically important that he can't go for hours without talking to her even though he's in the middle of quite possibly his biggest career opportunity. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Gabriel was really stupid for getting himself ousted that way, but I think he did it b/c he's BIG enough (LOL) on his own to not really NEED this show. He didn't seem ashamed or upset by them asking him to leave. He just left and said thanks.

Kristin did need the exposure from this show. I hope she gets it b/c she's really funny. I'm still gonna try and catch her act locally in August.

I thought Roz was funny, but if she could just stop screaming I might stand to listen to her for longer than a few minutes.

Ty was my favorite last night - he really stepped it up and I laughed out loud numerous times (which feels really stupid when it's just you in your living room) - his best performance by far.

I thought Chris fell apart - he stuttered his first line and used some weird voice for the first half of his routine...he picked it up toward the end but I was totally disappointed. I like him.

Josh did great, the Gabriel phone thing CRACKED me up...I don't know if it was really that funny or if I was just that tired, but I laughed hysterically for the rest of his performance.

I didn't care for Michele at all, her delivery style is too "joke, make weird facial expression to let audience know they should laugh now"...I didn't laugh once.

At the end when they supposedly showed the two comics in danger after a whole commercial worth of voting - they didn't actually show who was in danger, did they? Did I miss it? I'm eastern, so west coasters, did they fix it by then?

Great recap, Pekmboyd! I just watched the episode and I was thinking all the things you wrote and now I don't have to type it all out. I can just say, "I agree!" and be done with it! :)

Weren't we supposed to vote online to bring some comics back?

I think we're all thinking the same thing here. Chris was the least funny for me and (sadly) Michele wasn't that good either. Roz brought it, but I don't think her style will be appreciated much longer. Josh is clearly the audience favorite. And Ty is the dark horse (no, not because he's black) and could possibly sneak in to win it all.

I was invited to go to Caroline's a few months back to see some coimic (I can't remember who...) and Roz happened to be the opener. Her delivery is what made most of her stuff funny; for some reason I think it loses something on TV.

Are you people nuts? Chris had the best set of the night, and this is coming from someone who didn't care to see him advance after his lame-ass French bashing jokes from the auditions. I laughed more during his routine than I did with all the other comedians combined.
Ty was okay for most of his set, but did finish strong.
Roz was alright as well.
Josh was surprisingly not all that great. I expected far better from him.
Michele let me down almost as much as Kristin did last week. After her second head-to-head, I expected so much more from her.

Except that Chris spent most of his acting speaking in a strange (but oddly familiar) way. It was almost as annoying as the way Roz yells. I thought Ty was pretty funny -- funnier than Roz and Michelle anyway.

I saw Gary, Alonzo & Jay perform together in Boston right after their season ended. Even my husband (who thinks that Jay London is the funniest thing since whoopie cushions and hand buzzers) had to admit that Jay wasn't very funny, and the audience barely responded to any of his jokes/act. But, Gary and Alonzo? Killed! They were a riot, both of them.

So...I didn't catch the show last week because we were away on vacation. Are we now waiting for the results of the voting? When does that happen? Is it going to be dragged out for an hour, somehow? (Sillly question!)

I saw that same show OG. Jay's jokes bombed at my show too.

Scoty- he only tells the "cookie jokes" by request at the end of his act now b/c he likes to keep writing new material instead of expecting people to pay good money to see him tell the same jokes over and over. He took requests from the audience to retell any of their faves the last time I saw him live. He's really grateful and kind to his fans.

OG- they announce who's voted out at the very beginning of the show and then the remaining three comics will do their acts. They were giving them a 5 min set, but maybe they'll extend it now that there will be less performers.

Well, copygodd, you're certainly entitled to your own opinion! But I'll tell you that Gary absolutely OWNED the crowd when I saw him perform, he was very funny. But, hey, comedy is a subjective thing. Back on point, I think Josh Blue's schtick may have run to the end of it's course last night. I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed though because he's playing the same angle Heffron did when he won. Lot's of simple, family/kid based humor - must get the votes or something. There wasn't a lot of LOL moments for me last night but I still think Ty is getting stronger. The dude is definitely peaking at the right time. Chris and Ty in the final two is my guess (and hope).

I agree and I don't...I thought it was Chris whose schtick got played out last night - enough with the penis and/or pot jokes! Ty told drug jokes that were actually funny, proving that it's not the subject matter, it's the guy writing the jokes. Ty is my favorite to win - his humor is smarter, he has more variety, and he doesn't feel as forced on stage as the other two.

And I have to say that any of the three of them are a HUGE improvement over that god-awful caveman at the beginning. Totally painful. Does he remind anybody else of the Gorgs from Fraggle Rock?

Yeah, I was trying to avoid even hyping Chris at all because his routine didn't do much for me. The thing is, with his past performances, you know he can bring it. It's like he's trying too hard or letting the pressure get to him. See how shiny his head was at the end of his performance? Pressure sweat. One thing for sure is that Josh Blue has made a name for himself. He'll do well in the comedy circuits now that he's had such major exposure. Totally agree that Ty is looking like the favorite. He'll take it if he keeps up what he's been doing but Chris still has the potential for one last blast.

Chris
08-02-2006, 09:04 AM
OH COME ON! Chris is an arrogant jerk! "People were blasting me last week on the message boards for my set. Apparently, they didn't see the standing ovation." Give me a break. The dude is cocky and he doesn't have much to back it up with, if anything. Yeah, he was funny when he won the showdown before the finals but he even said he was using his best stuff for that performance and it's very clear he hasn't written anything better since.

Josh is a funny guy and will make it to the finals but he does not deserve it all simply because I don't think it's possible for him to even fill the total time of the Bravo special he'd win.

Ty DOES deserve to win and I truly hope he does. He is humble and hilarious week after week.

And boo to all of you who diss my Jay London. :)

ScotyUtah

Yeah, I was surprised he tried to bust on message board folks instead of taking the criticism. Given his looks and style you think he could find more ammo in the way of self deprication. I'm just hoping that someone can break something out that really makes me laugh.

Josh has been my favorite since the beginning, but I was really disappointed with his set this week. I haven't really liked Ty that much, but I did laugh a few times, more for him than Josh or Chris. I really don't know how it'll play out next week.

Who was that caveman guy at the beginning? He was awful. Not funny, not clean-looking. Just a waste of airtime. I normally like Caroline Rhea as an actress, but I didn't think she was funny either. All in all, this week's episode was really a letdown.

My biggest disappointment with Jay is that he's still using much the same material that he did when he was competing. I know that's his schtick, but it would be nice to see him mix it up a little.

Caroline Rhea was hilarious. I really don't get why people didn't care for her set. It's obvious she was on as a plug for The Biggest Loser, but that doesn't take away from the fact that she's a great stand-up. And she got in a much funnier dig at Mel Gibson than Anthony Clark, who just didn't make sense when he said, "Who let the dogs out? I'm thinking Mel Gibson." What the f... f...fffffudge? What the hell does that even mean?

I actually thought Josh had one of his best sets of the season, and Chris got off to a rocky start but really picked it up and finished strong. Ty didn't seem to get as many laughs and they didn't seem to be as loud as the others got, but it's still seeming like a strong final three.

Congrats to Josh Blue. I have to admit a lot of his stuff was funny because of the way he delivered it. Being self depricating never hurt a comic and he worked that angle well.

Funny, I watched the entire season except the final results show. I just didn't care to see who won....

I'm not sure why, but I get a kick out of those "overhead" websites. Anyway, I saw this the other day and thought of you, zoobabe:

And Take it From me, Comedy Shows Are No Fun!

Comedy show ticket hawker: Hey, come to a comedy show. It will be fun! C'mon!

That's Chris Porter and yes, he's probably the funniest of that motley bunch. He just choked down the stretch.

June 13th = Season 5 premiere.

The only season I watched was the last one, and it sucked bad. The people they picked were terrible...and just thinking about it makes me want to vomit.

However, from what I understand...this season will have contestants from around the world. That should be interesting.
